vitamins/weight loss supplements

Quote  |  Reply
hey ya'll. are any of ya'll taking any vitamins or supplements? if so, which ones?

i'm taking 1 omega 3 fish oil capsule a day.. i hear it helps keep your skin looking good while the weight comes off and also helps with making your nails stronger, etc. and it's good for your cardiovascular health. also 1 carb blocker pill with each meal. 1 one-a-day weight loss vitamin each day. and also 2 slim for life (dietary supplements) pills with each meal.

dang, that's a freakin mouthful of pills a day isn't it? eesh.

Hi, not being funny but if you're eating properly you shouldn't need all those pills, stick to 5 a day fruit and veg and oily fish eg sardines mackeral and you'll still look and feel great but you won't rattle when you walk!!!!! as far as carb blockers etc they're  ok short term but if you rely on them for weight loss it'll just come back on when you stop. Sorry but there's really no easy way!
I don't know, I've read that with the genetic engineering to make crops grow faster and more productive,  and with the pesticides and herbicides being used today we need the vitamins...good quality ones. The same source said that for the nutritional value our grandparents got out of one apple, we would have to eat 10!!! I take GNC'S Men's Sports Formula vitamins. I also take zinc since I've lost my sense of taste.
Deja Vous...

I take GNC Total Lean most days, One A Day Active, and sometimes Vitamin C or Fiber tablets.
you lost your sense of TASTE??How did that happen and how are you coping with that??
there's no way in hell i can eat sardines.. haha i gotta stick with the fish oil pills! ;)
The doctor ran some tests and discovered my body was abnormally low in zinc (apparently it plays a big role in your sense of taste). He also thinks I may have sleep apnia and that is also contributing to it. ( I have a sleep study scheduled for June 5). There has been one great benefit from this. Since I can no longer taste sweets, I no longer have any desire to eat them. It's funny, at first, I would see a piece of cake or pie or  a candy bar and my old desire would kick in but I didn't enjoy the experience (all I could feel was a wet wad of something in my mouth). Now the desire to eat them is gone. The downside is there is no great desire to eat anything. I have finally learned the meaning of eating to live not living to eat.
dgiger, I feel for ya.  Since this mega-cold latched on me, I can't taste anything, so it really brings down any tasteful urges, infact eating is hard enough.

As for vitamins, I take a one-a-day womens, omega 3 salmon oil, flax oil, vitamin C (for the cold) & vitamin E for skin, hair, & nails.  I read in a weightloss magazine (looking good now) that the fish oils rev up your metabolism, so I take them to help benefit my exercise.
I take

  • omega3 fish oil, 2 capsules w breakfast & 2 w dinner, unless i'm having fish for dinner
  • evening primrose oil, 1 capsule
  • super antioxidant,1 capsule
  • ginger, 2 capsules
  • folate, 1 tablet
  • lecithin, 1 capsule
  • garlic, 2 caps at breakfast & 2 at dinner
  • alpha linolenic acid, 1 tab
and I was taking a milk thistle capsule for my liver but I ran out of them and haven't bought more yet.

I've been plateau'd since Januray, so I can't say that any of this has helped in that respect. But my bloodwork looks fabulous.
I take the below mixture based on reading I've done the past few weeks regarding how to build muscle... boost my metabolism and burn more fat.
  • Daily vitamin (just in case)
  • Vitamin A (to help my eyes)
  • B Complex (it's good for you)
  • CLA  (2 capsules twice a day. Is supposed to help your body break down fat)
  • Ginger (1 cap every meal... good for digestion and blood flow to stomach... supposed to help boost metabolism amongst other things)
  • Cayenne Fruit (2 caps every meal same reason as ginger)
  • chromium picolinate (boost metabolism helps build muscle)
  • Calcium to keep my bone density
Beyond trying to eat a balanced diet I also use Utlimate Nitritions ProStar protrein drink in the AM after I work out to get the protein my body needs to build muscle.

I buy my vitamin/herbs at WalMart cuz I'm cheap. I have to order the protein drink on line because I can't find it around where I live.

Nomoreexcuses, you've been plateauing since January??? Your persistence must be outstanding, amazing. Tell me how you come by your tenaciousness. Also, what have you been trying to break this plateau?

Ninav, I'm pretty cheap myself.
I take a one a day, an asprin and one tab of calcium every day. That's it. The calcium and asprin are due to my age. Since I started on these pills I have felt much better than dieting without them--don't know if it's in my head or what, but it seems to help.
dgiger,

yes, persistence is one word. stubborn is another. thanks for using the nicer word   :)

when I started trying to get healthier last year, I sort of felt in my gut that this time I would really do it - that my motivation was right - the desire to be healthy, to be active, to share a great life with my family/loved ones... to not be restricted by my size anymore.

but last fall was sort of the culmination of a lot of stressful events, including the death of two close family members, one in sept and one in dec.  By december i was really, really depressed. I was late to work every day. Didn't get much done at work. I slept about 10-12 hours each night. I had stopped doing all but the most basic housework.  I'd say I was operating at about 10-15% of my normal capacity in terms of productivity. I started to feel like life wasn't worth living... and knew I needed to get help.

so in January, I went on meds for depression.  My depression has diminished substantially.  I'd say I'm up to about 75% of my usual energy level now.  And I don't dissolve into tears anymore.  Well, rarely anyway.

But I haven't lost any more weight since then either.

Remarkably, I haven't gone off my eating plan. I started out with the low GI eating plan in mind, but I've even restricted certain foods moreso in the last month in the hopes of figuring out why my body wants to hold on to all this fat.

In addition to avoiding sugar and refined flour, I am also avoiding wheat and gluten altogether now.  I think I want to avoid red meat too - I feel better when I don't eat it.  I'm using soy milk instead of cows milk and allowing only small quantities of cheese every so often, like 1 ounce once a week.

Your question has made me wonder if the depression meds are the problem. But I hate to think it might be because it sounds like an excuse and I don't want any more excuses - I want solutions.
I just take a

woman's one a day vitamin,

 Zantac (for acid reflux),

and some kind of energy pill that has caffene in it. Right now that happens to be Sport XLA ( which talk about cheap I bought this on clearance and I think I know why). That's not working. I tried Hydroxycut but that's 2 expensive  when you are taking 6 pills a day. I took Metabolift for the longest and it seemed to work the best but now I can't find it. So I'm just trying to find the right one for me. I just need a good boost in the morning to get going and exercise.
I take the following:

1 Acidophillus plus... 1 500 mg L-Lysine

each AM

1 "Major" Fish Oil Omega-3

1 Calcium-6-- plus D

1 Melatonin 3-mg

and sometimes some "Motrin" for jumpy legs (only thing I've found works for me)

each PM

Thinkin' I may need to pick the Chromium Picolinate, Daily Vitamin, and Vitamin C back up again, as I'm plataued (sp) and think this may kick me back into gear again..

The Omega-3 is good for so much it doesn't make sense not to take it.. and I take the supplements I think I need the most at night 'cause I think my body makes the best use of them then.. I was told my bone density is low and I should up my Calcium and D helps to absorb that.. it is also supposed to help with sleep (Calcium) .. and I've read with fat loss as well.. who knows..

The Melatonin seems to help to get my brain to "shut up" so I can get the sleep I need to keep the rest of me on track.. (take it 'bout 20 to 30 min. before estimated bedtime)

I inherited "restless/jumpy legs" and I stumbled upon "motrin" as the the only thing that works  when I had to go to the ER for a neck injury .. they prescribed 800mg motrin  (wayyy more than the label says.. and I avoid takin' anymore than two 200mg "motrin" unless I absolutely have to since I got past the neck thing.. but I DEFINITELY needed it then.. and it worked)... they also seem to help me sleep.. although I try to hold off on them when I can to hold them in reserve for when I really need them for my legs.. they are supposed to be hard on your liver... (heads up)

I take the L-Lysine to help ward off the "cold sores" I used to get allll the time .. usually anytime I had any spike in stress.. Dr. Gott recommends then for such.. and it's worked WONDERS for me..

I take the Acidophilus for general purposes... I don't bloat nearly as much.. my digestive system works better... neither I nor my boys get sick nearly as much either.. It's the good bacteria that battles the bad that keeps everything in balance where it's supposed to be..

That's my take on it ..

Take what works for you from it.. and pass on what additional wisdom you may have gleaned from wherever..

Best To All,

;) Porch
I recently started to take Don Quai, Black Cohosh and St John's Wort. I have found that it is helping sleep at night. I think as we get older estrogen has a large part to play in the other hormones of our body. This combination seems to keep things on an even keel for me.
Most of the time, all I take is a children's multivitamin with iron. It doesn't have as much of the vitamins as an adult dose would, but it fills in the gaps if I'm low in something for a little while.
I take a One a day maximum multi vitamin and one Bayer aspirin a day. My Father died of a heart attack at 52 so I figure the aspirin a day can't hurt. - That and dropping the excess pounds.

For those of you that take the fish oil do you find the it offers any benefits?  I have them but can never remember to take them.
Hey all,

I take 500mg vitamin c and post natal vitamins.   I am sure I will have to switch to one a day maximum when I am done breastfeeding.

Some of the postings by everyone are very helpful for me to consider when I decide to workout on a regular basis.

Thanks,

HM
Daily regimen: I take 2 Omegas, 1 multi, 1-Vitamin C, Fat Burner, I am also taking a weight loss pill through my doctor in 2-Month Increments (I am doin it gradually to learn about maintenance)

So far its has proven succesful. While I was of the thought that one does not need all those pills. I have learned that with my busy schedule I wasnt getting the proper nutrients to support the level of activity and food intake. Its a matter of listening to your body and tailor to what you need... What amount of supps to take vary from person to person...What cocktail works for oyu might noty work for another etc.

VERY well, and sensibly, put...
