VitaMuffins! - Healthy Chocolately goodness

Quote  |  Reply
Has anyone else had these?

I discovered them at Safeway and now I'm totally addicted eating one every day, usually the chocolate ones :)

They're full of protien, fiber, and about 50% of a lot of the daily vitamins and only 100 cal each (for the 2 oz ones - the 4 oz ones are 200)!

Okay...so they don't taste exactly like the world's greatest thing, but you can almost fool yourself into thinking you're getting to have cake and i don't know what it is about them, but I swear they're my new version of food!crack, because even though i only half like them i just can't stop my one a day habit. *L*

i suppose there are worse addictions.

anyone else addicted?

I saw them at hungry-girl.com, and today i was at the grocery store debating on whether i should pay almost five bucks for them. thing is, the box is incredibly small but I dont think they were just muffin tops, i think they were actual muffins. So i figured since the box was really small and thin, the muffins were probably not worth 100 calories. What did you think of them? How big are they? How much do you pay?
Well our safeway has the smaller muffins (not the 4 oz ones or the tops on the website) which are $4.99 for a box of 4.  so yeah...not the cheapest.  but the ones I have are what I consider to be normal cupcake size if maybe smaller than some "muffins"

The "cake" part is a bit like diet food...not the tastiest, but not altogether bad.  But it's infused with tons of chocolate chips which as far as i can tell taste identical to any chocolate chips and when microwaved get all lovely and melty :) so any bite that has those in it is good!

I tried the brownie too which was more expensive ($6.29 or something for 4 @ 100 cal each).  It had better tasting cake stuff but no chocolate chips and was covered in entirely too many walnuts that i ended up scraping off.

mostly i prefer the chocolate ones, but then i was never much for regular fruit bran muffins anway... :p
yeah, the ones at the grocery store here are the 2 oz ones. I'll definately give them a try, heated up they sound great!

I'll pick up some of the chocolate ones as soon as I can.
I've heard so much about these on here that I went to check them out tonight at the only place nearby me that carries them, the Whole Foods Market. But I was sorely disappointed to find out that they were discontinued in their store because they found out that the muffins had perservatives and since they don't sell any foods with perservatives they cut them out. :-( And I really don't think I could afford to pay around 30 bucks s&h included for a 12 pack from their from their website when I don't even know if I'll like them. Sigh.
I've been meaning to look for them at my local grocery store. Do you guys find them in frozen foods, or breads, or what?
I couldn't find them at the QFC, but at my Safeway they're in the frozen food (meant to be microwaved or otherwise heated) next to the organic and health food stuff like Amy's dinners and whatnot.

Yeah, the price is up there, so I'd definitely recommend the 4 pack first if you can find them :(

I think they are packed with lots of gross fake stuff (aghve to check) and you're better off with GNU bars, but they're a good sometimes food I think (I cant get them so cant tell you)

I made a mini microwave muffin once. I tried it again and it turned into goo. I'll keep experimenting and let you know. but it was like 70 cal for a mini muffin (cupcake size), NO FAT.
I love vitamuffins - they're my solution to my chocolate cravings, and a great way to get more fiber in for the day.  On the others, the better ones are the bluebran and multigrain.

As for the price, based on what I can get in the few places in my area that has them, it's actually cheaper to order them off the Vitamuffin website.  Occasionally they even have specials where they average out to only $1 a muffin.  The brownies cost a bit more, but I first had them when I ordered a sampler pack, and they are pretty good (hard to believe it's only a 100 calorie brownie...)

Nikolek6:  Currently, the Vitamuffin website is offering a 12 pack of deep chocolate Vitatops for $14 - does shipping and handling jack that up to $30?

red_herring:  I'm not sure about the 'gross stuff' or preservatives - I'll check the labels on the ones I have, but according to their website:  "As VitaTops are all natural and contain no preservatives, we recommend freezing upon receipt so they stay fresh."
love these! all flavors! the vitatops that i ordered from the website are my favorite... can anybody say peanut butter fudge flavor!? actually, the bran-y ones are my favorites, but they're all pretty tasty. if you buy a bunch online i'm pretty sure they're cheaper than at the store, esp if you find a deal. but why not buy one box from teh freezer section if you can find one and see whether it's worth it to you to buy a bunch!
ADDICTED!  I order about 4 dozen a month online.  I LOVE the dark chocolate pom ones <3.  mmmmm breakfast :)

Wish my safeway hand them!.

Hungry-Girl just put out a free shipping promo code: hgchip.  I LOVE free shipping :) Expires 5/23 @ midnight

And all ingredients are natural, product is preservative free.

Heres the ingredients in my dark chocolate pomagranate one:
water, whole wheat flower, organic evaporated cane juice, egg whites, chocolate chips, cocoa, erythritol, soy fiber, insulin, dried honey, wheat gluten, plant sterol, leavening, pomegranate mill, natural flavors, tricalcium phosphate, lechithin, sea salt, xantham gum, vitamin c, vitamin E, iron, biotin, vitamin A, zinc, vitamin B12, vitamin B5, vitamin B6.

VUALA!  mmmm muffins :)
Right...nothing too gross or unnatural here for the deep chocolate variety, red_herring:

Water, whole wheat flour, organic evaporated cane juice, egg whites, chocolate chips (sugar, chocolate liquor, cocoa butter, butterfat, soy lecithin added as an emulsifier, vanilla), cocoa (processed with alkali), soy fiber, inulin, dried honey, wheat gluten, leavening (sodium acid pyrophosphate, sodium bicarbonate), natural flavors, lecithin, sea salt, xanthan gum, vitamin C, vitamin E, iron, biotin, vitamin A, zinc, vitamin B12, vitamin, D3, folic acid, vitamin, B5, vitamin B6.

The only semi-unrecognizable thing to me there is inulin, which as it turns out is chicory root fiber.  And they are 98% fat free 1.5 grams for the 100 cal 2 oz (55 gram).

(compare to GNU brownie bar if you're interested (40 g, 140 cal, 3 grams of fat: Gnu High Fiber Blend ? (organic whole wheat flour, oats, wheat bran, psyllium, flax, millet, soy flour), fruit juice, natural grain dextrins (a natural & unmodified starch), canola oil, dark chocolate chips (chocolate, cane sugar, lecithin, vanilla), cocoa powder, plums, rice, natural flavors, aluminum-free baking powder.)

And THANK YOU for the free shipping code!  I really want to try the pom tops...maybe now I will!
I like them, but I found that Trader Joes makes fiber muffins the same size for 80 calories. They are much less expensive, the only downside is "chocolate" is not one of the flavors haha. But they do have a couple good ones!
I just had a deep chocolate one...and seeing as I'm all antsy about a job interview tomorrow and it's almost TTOM...wow, this hit the spot.

I had a 100 calorie one and it was a perfect size for me. I don't really like to eat a lot of cake or stuff like that at once. Maybe I'm just used to it, but I didn't get the "diet" vibe at all! But then, I can't tell the difference between Diet Coke and Coca-Cola Classic, so...

It was a great snack. I feel totally satisfied from this one muffin. I also got some blueberry-bran ones- I can't wait to try them!
Well thast ok then. I must have read it somewhere else.
Sorry to be so misleading!!
i love them!

especially when they're heated and the chocolate chips are all melty. like heaven. haha my mouth is watering now. i think they're definitely worth the price. the blueberry ones are good too. but i'm not crazy about the raisin/bran ones. once i accidentally picked them up insted of bluebran. i ate it and was like "whaaat?!" (along with some other *special* words, lol).

there are also some that are only 80 cals.
Sucks! Now I reeeally want to try them haha. It seems to have them shipped to the west coast it costs $12.89, almost as much as the actual product costs! I tried to use the shipping code somebody posted and it said the purchase *before shipping charges* had to be worth at least $29. Sucks. :-( And I wonder what kind of preservatives they must have if they got rid of them from the Whole Foods Market? Hmm. I eat plenty of foods with preservatives so its no big deal really, but it just makes me wonder.
jackie - where are you finding the TJ muffins?  are they in the frozen section as well?  they sound good and easier to locate!  i've had tons of trouble locating those vitamuffins and have yet to try them despite my efforts.
I am TOTALLY addicted. I have the bran, blueberry, and chocolate ones in my freezer right now. Right next to the vita BROWNIES. So delish! They're an excellent after dinner treat when you have a sweet tooth!
teenwolf,
they are located by the breads and stuff :)

I throw them in the microwave even though they aren't frozen, 'cause I like my muffins warm :)
