Non voter now voting for McCain based on.. P Diddy?

Quote  |  Reply

I was listening to the radio this morning and they were discussing how, in the Presidential debates, McCain referred to Barack as 'that one'.  Most on the show didn't feel he meant that in a racially negative way but then again, they said, they are white and they could understand how this could be offensive.. anyway, they said that P Diddy (Puff Daddy, Sean Puffy Combs - whatever) blogged about his anger about Obama being called 'That Guy' and he felt it was racially motivated.

Well, a caller said that she was not planning on voting at all but since P. Diddy said that she's now going to vote for McCain in spite.  Regardless of how you took what McCain said.. isn't that a terrible reason to decide who's going to be President? Based on what Puff Daddy says??

What are your thoughts?

I think that woman is racist.

I think that there are alot of stupid voters who are going to vote for alot of stupid reasons. That, I feel, is a Stupid Reason.

It reminds me of eight years ago when I worked at a Nursing Home and I was talking to a coworker who said she was voting for Bush because his (Bush's) daddy hated Broccoli.

I wouldn't trust Puffy as far as I can throw him.

Did you hear his rant about gas prices and having to fly (ghasp) commercial because he can't afford to fill up his precious private jet???

Like most other celebrities, I pay no attention to anything he says that is in any way political.  I think this lady was an idiot for letting anything he said make an impact on her voting.

First off, I don't think what McCain said was racially based. I think it was said out of frustration and maybe a little anger.  However, it will not affect who I vote for and should not be a deciding factor for anyone. That's ridiculous.

Unfortunately, given the state of politics today and how jaded people have become, there are a lot of people who do not have a reason to vote for a candidate, but have plenty of reasons, real or imaginary, serious or frivolous, to vote against a candidate.

Yeah, what you described does seem petty, IMO, but we need to look at the atomosphere and political machine that generates that kind of apathy.

On a side note - If that caller has such a thing against P Diddy, why in the world were they reading his blog in the first place?  And why does P Diddy's opinion matter that much to them?  Undecided

I am in NO WAY a McCain supporter, but staight up... he didn't mean it like that when he said.. "that one"... my mom uses that term sometimes when talking about me or whoever to someone else for example... "and THAT ONE over there (points to me lol) doesn't listen to a word I say!" I also didn't think he was being racist when he said that " you probably never heard of freddie and fannie until recently..." I think that he was answering the question to america... which honestly MOST people never even heard of freddie or fannie until recently.

oh and regarding the OP, that woman is obviously a moron.

I don't think so either.  It certainly came off as dismissive with a tinge of irritation, but not racist - IMO, of course.

She's in good company, because there are a lot of people that manage to come up with incredibly inane reasons for why they are voting for a candidate, let alone at all.

I also don't think he meant "That one" as racist. I have been called "that one" by my mother as well. It was usually over something irritating, embarrassing, etc.  It is dismissive by nature and is somewhat condescending.

This comment did come later in the debate and you could tell McCain was getting irritated the later it got. I think he knew he wasn't doing as well as he had hoped/planned and he was frustrated. My eyebrows did go up when he said it. I knew it was going to be a topic of discussion and that it would reflect badly on him.

I think his using the term shows his lack of respect for Obama.

I'm so sick of "Diddy"!

I didn't consider it a racist comment in any way either. I did however find it disrespecful. My mindset isn't setup that way though. So I may not notice racist insinuations as much as the next person. Mc.Cain hasn't been running a respectful campaign against Obama as of late. In reality that could be the reason P. Diddy is really upset. The newest smears have gotten under peoples skin. He may've made claim of that comment " That One. " When in reality he was pissed over something else from Mc.Cain. Such as them using his middle name as a scare tactic and using the insinuation he's a terrorist.

My friend wasn't planning to vote at all. He's now passionate about voting for Obama. He's always being confused for another race. His father is American and his mother is Epyptian so his features are different. He's an American though through and through. He said he's voting Obama because he's tired of people that are ' different ' being called terrorist. Everyone that drives a cab or has a different accent isn't the enemy. I've seen people insinuate things about his race over and over. The reason for which being it's more common to see a middle eastern than an Epyptian. He doesn't look like an American at all. But, he says over the last few years it's been a problem when it wasn't before now. I have a friend that's from Asia she's always being asked " Are you one of those pakistani women from over there." She's married to one of my dearest friends. He says he's about knocked people in their faces for insulting her. That people even have the nerve to say off colored comments about her to him knowing he's her husband. It's ridiculous. Regardless if someone is born in America or not. It seems like everyone is clumped into a terrorist role. I don't think it was that comment so much as the multiple actions that lead up to the comment being deemed an ' ism. ' By people that have felt hatred issued towards them for being 'one of those.'  Or ' that one.'

I watched the debates and the only time I heard McCain say "that one" was when he pointed to Obama to show that he voted with Bush. I do not think that had anything to do with race at all.

Well if McCain/Palin wins I'm just going to emmigrate out of spite!  Well.. after college Smile

On a more serious note Palin is the main reason I'm 100% behind Obama.. You do realize if McCain won it is a very real possibility he could die (age-related) during his term..  Do we really want a fundamentalist religious zealot with less experience than Obama in the white house?

 Yep. What SHE said.

I don't think Palin has less experience that Obama. And yes, I really would love to see her in the White House.

They actually played the clip of the P Diddy comment this morning on the radio.

I don't think I heard the word "racist" ever mentioned.  It seems like he was implying that it was disrespectful.  Which it was.

I tend to agree with Biden on this one. He said McCain acts this way when he's on the attack. He doesn't make eye contact, he refers to the opponent as if he or she isn't there.  He also said he knows McCain hates being in that position.

I think this is probably accurate. See no evidence of racial-bias in the comment, but I do think McCain is very uncomfortable campaigning this way.

I wish McCain could reign the negativity back in. It's not his style and it doesn't fit the image I had of him as an honorable, if somewhat flawed, man.

I grew up in the south and I absolutely think that McCain's comment was  unconsciously racist.  To his credit, he didn't finish his sentence.  If he had, it would have been political suicide.

I don't know about the rest of you, but it scares me to death to think that the next President will be responsible for nominating up to three Supreme Court Justices.

If McCain were elected and something happened to him, there is NO WAY I would want Sarah Palin to have that enormous responsibility.  The funny thing is that McCain picked her to appeal to women like me, generally conservative, middle aged and religious. Problem is, she has to walk the walk before she talks the talk.

I just think McCain has been very rude and you can see how he despites Obama in every debate.  When he said "that one" that was just plain rude. Show some respect.

Oh, well my radio station took the spin that he was implying it to be racial.. but either way... it shouldn't matter what P. Diddy thinks.. at least not enough to base your votes on, IMO.. although, going with P.Diddy might be more sensible than going with who eats broccoli! LOL
