Wagon Jumpers - July 26 - August 1, 2009 (Closed)
Welcome
(I keep the waiting list capped at 4 people as it can be a 16 week wait with that length, please check back later.)
Welcome to the Wagon Jumpers weekly thread. We are a group of CC members who have identified that one of our main challenges with achieving our weight loss, maintenance or general health goals is consistency.
This thread is designed to encourage long term commitment to our goals by publicly declaring them and asking the other members of this thread to hold us accountable. The primary focus of wagon jumpers is not how much weight you have lost, or need to loose, but what you need to do on a daily basis to meet your long term goals.
There are two rules for Wagon Jumpers:
1. All members must post once per week between Sunday and Friday.
2. All members must check the thread for members who have not posted by Saturday (a short list is posted on Thursday) or are on the MIA list on Sunday and send them a polite and positive message to stay involved in the group and on track with their goals.
If you would like to be a member of this thread please see the guidelines below and send me a PM if you are still interested (there may be a waiting list).
Medium Size Group = Some Time Commitment
The original idea of Wagon Jumpers was to create a close community where participants could get to know each other and hopefully form virtual-life and perhaps even physical-life bonds to create a support network as they attempted long term weight loss.
We quickly discovered that this was impossible with an 'always open' group as there were too many people coming and going. For this reason the group is finding its optimum level is between 20 and 25 participants.
A medium sized group means that we have an active thread that produces between 30 - 45 posts per week. Members do not need to read / respond to every post every week. I do notice that those who respond regularly do tend to keep their goals top of mind, and have a better chance to achieve them. I estimate the average time spent by an active member on Wagon Jumpers to be between 1-2 hours per week.
If you are looking for an always open group on CC there are several that operate by different weight criteria, similar motivational patterns etc... There are also many small groups that cap their numbers between 4-10 people to keep the group more intimate, and easier for members to keep up with.

General Guidelines for Joining
1. Are you a wagon jumper?
Do you know how to loose weight, you often have success but then you find yourself loosing interest in your plan, or sabotaging your plan. It's not the "how" to loose weight that is the problem, it's the "how" to stay motivated.
2. Do you have a long way to go?
This group is designed so that members can get to know each other and support each other. Ideally you are planning to be a CC member and part of this forum for at least 6 months or more to achieve your goals and hopefully stay in motivation for a further 6 months or more.
Yes. This is, a long term plan.
3. Do you have the time?
This is a medium sized group, the thread does move fairly quickly each week. If you do not have regular internet access this is likely not the group for you.
Still interested?
Send Supersized a PM. (Please do not reply on the thread)
An overview will be sent to you, you will have a chance to ask questions and an invitation will be sent to you once a spot is open.
Google Group
We have recently added a google group as an option for members, past members, and members on the waiting list. If you would like access to the google group (and are in one of the above categories) send a message to beaglesmuggler (at) roger.com with your username and e-mail address and I will add you to the google group.

Coming Soonish (see "Where's Sara?")
Congratulations in Order
There are so many of you that are reaching important monthly milestones this month. I'm going to ask the group to pick up a bit of my slack, please look at our introductory post and see who has reached and important month, reach out to them and send them a private message congratulations. Thanks!
Where's Sara?
We just moved yesterday! My SIL came through, so did the boys, and another truck from one of the boys. I love the new place. I was able to wake put this morning and walk out my onto my back deck for a treetop view of Toronto, see my neighbours amazing garden and hear the birds instead of the trucks. We are still in the heart of the city, but what a difference being on a side street makes!
Long story short, we finished our move - all furniture & getting the bed put together at 9:30 pm last night and then we crashed. I still need to unpack all the boxes, we don't have a working kitchen yet (you can see my priorities, I've got the internet set up!) and I don't get time off from work so I need to be in on Monday. In other words I may miss some things this week. So give each other good congratulations and I'll catch up with you all when I'm at work.
Sorry to all I haven't set my usual congratulatory message to on your monthly milestones!
Congratulation Sara!! Moving stinks but when it is to a living space that makes you more at peace then it soooo worth it.
We live in a suburbanish area of Portland but used to live in more the urbanish area of Portland and I miss it! I used to be able to walk to everything. Now, it is carville!
I visited Toronto once a long time ago in January - shoot that was cold! But it was a beautiful place. I love it.
Week:
OK, not sure what the assignment will be but here is my weekly status. Got to run about 1 1/2 miles before the leg was just not happy. Got a knee sleeve and that helps. So, it is gym ville now - took a yoga class that started to loosen up my joints.
I am going to a Naturopathic doc in the next few weeks that has these techniques to re-align your body which I believe caused all these issues.
My goal is to do cardio for 5 hours this week and do NROLFW (what I can do with my knee) 3X this week.
Eating -well, it is not terribly in control but not terrribly out of control. I wish I could find a psychologist / therapist that focused on the mindset behind eating.. so far no dice.
Take care.
My workouts are going well, but thats about it. I've gained back a few lbs and i'm now at 159.8.
I feel icky and I have to get back to eating right. I hate feeling so sluggish.
Sara: Congratulations on you move! And a BIG congratulations to you for keeping it all together while your life and living space are in the state of upheaval I came to know very well.
This Week: I'm just now picking up steam again. I tried on my wedding dress and now I have pictures on my phone to remind me what I'm aiming for. The wedding is exactly 2 months away today, and I'll need to get that dress in for alterations within a month.
My fiance and I have decided that instead of signing up for a gym, we're making a one-time investment in our Wii console. We added Wii Fit and Wii Active to our lives. So far, it's a blast. The Wii Fit has some wonderful activities like yoga and balancing games. It also keeps a record of my weight so I know where I stand at any given time. The Wii Active is much higher intensity and lets you set goals, track your progress, and earn trophies. They have a 30-day challenge that I find very motivating.
Eating healthily is still a challenge for me, and getting around to recording the calories even more so, but I think I know what the problem is (besides poor self-discipline, of course). My sleep habits lately have been terrible, and due to that I've been slacking off on cooking/packing meals and exercising, and it's made me more dependent on caffeine which BOTH add to my stress level. I want to start spending a few minutes every morning meditating and relaxing and then get it moving!
Hey Sara! Glad to hear that things worked out in the end. You are one busy lady, so hope that your day at work today is filled with sunshine!
Check-In: I FELL OFF THE WAGON....yep
. I did not log my calories this past week, as I was a bundle of nerves. As you may or may not know...Tim and I had purchased a house with in-law suite (took possession Dec 2008), and I have been a caregiver for my Mom basically since that time. She had a stroke July 17, 2007, and needs full time care. Anyway, I also went for a second interview this week, and will be returning to work effective August 10th!!! Yay me! This however has brought much anxiety to my parents, as we now need to find my replacement in a very short time. Hence the reason why I have been off track. Today is a new day, and I look forward to getting back into routine....well at least this week, as I will be heading on vacation as of next Saturday for 1 week.
Have a great one everyone!!!
Lee-Anne
Sara, congrats on the move. Moving is always a gargantuan effort. So is being the primary care giver for an elderly parent. It is difficult to take care of yourself when you have so much else going on. I know you both can do it.
I am at the beach this week hosting a large group. I managed to eat well and go for a long walk on Sat. Yesterday was a disaster. Today, being Monday, I am determined to do better. Realistically, I cannot work on fat loss this week. My goal is damage control, lots of water and a few long walks. Hopefully I can do it.
Check In: I feel like I want to eat everything in the house, not sure why this is. I have no stressful event in my life, just feel like eating. It's annoying. Maybe I should weigh since I ate quite a bit yesterday too, it might have sobering effect.
Glad the move went well Sara. Your deck sounds lovely. Hm, Lee-Anne, that does sound stressful. Congrats on the new job and hope things work out soon regarding your mom's care :)
laura42 -- water is definitely great for damage control. I should go drink a glass!
I may not actually get to a weekly topic this week, I'm mainly working from the computer in the office, still unpacking at home.
I'm happy that my kitchen is fully unpacked. There was big temptation to use the move as an excuse to order in more food last night, but instead I stopped by the market, picked up some fish and had a reasonably healthy dinner.
Sorry for the lack of personal responses. Hope everyone is having a good week. Take care of each other.
Sara.
Hi all,
Doing well this week... finally. Got myself on track. I'm focused!
I'm also in the process of starting a blog to track my journey! I'll let you know when I get it up and running :)
Had a good workout yesterday and over the weekend. I feel good :)
Just wanted to check in. Hope all is well!
-Meg
Sara - Glad you made it into your new place and are loving it!
This week, I'm doing pretty good on my eating goals and OK on the exercise goals - we're moving on Fri/Sat/Sun, so I'm sure I'll be burning a lot of cals during that time anyway. Also, there's all the last-minute packing to do. :-) Better get back to it!
Hi all,
Not much time here. So sorry.
Congrats on the move Sara, I know how tough it is! Hope you settle in soon.
I am with Meg. I am right on with the workouts, but not my logging. I know I am eating right, but just don't have the time to log it. Maybe next round.
Have to run... catch all of you later. Remember - healthgain is worth it, and so are you!
Healthgain to all,
~Julie
If you all are interested, i just started my own blog. Only one entry on it right now, but I plan to post again tonight: http://megintraining.blogspot.com
My biggest problem seems to be temptation and mindless snacking... need to work on that....
Congrats Sara on the move!
This week is going pretty well for me. I've been to the gym every day this week and have started uping the length of my runs again (time wise, not so much distance but I guess they do go together, next I'll have to work on speed) and still attending boxing once a week. I have decided to attend a couple more classes with the same instructor in the fall, they are Zumba and Turbo Jam, I'm pretty excited about it. I'm also doing pretty good with the food part of my goal as well. I think I'm going to make it to 100% goal achievement but we'll see since it's only about 1/4 way in at the moment :) (also this is thanks to the slack days I built into the goal, wouldn't have made it this far without them!).
Meg - nice blog, I was in the same boat in High School, very involved in sports but never seemed to help my weight any. I'm looking forward to reading your blog and maybe it will help keep me focused as well.
I actually joined another group here on cc, it's a Halloween challenge. The challenge is who loses the most weight between now and Halloween, based on % of weight not total pounds (to make things fair), there are only 20 people in the group. My thought was that this was an additional motivator for me and they post weight on a weekly basis so it's going to keep me honest for sure.
Well I'm off to get breakfast and start the work day. Have a great rest of the week!
Carrie (Raven)
Thanks Raven,
Thats what I'm hoping as well, keep me accountable and focused and help others at the same time! Plus I enjoy writing, but its been so long since i've done any that I'm a little rusty!
I'm frustrated today... Been eating well since monday and my weight has been creeping up all week. Don't know what thats about... Of course it is TTOM, but i've never gained during that week before, it usually just falls off me!
Hmph.
Off to work - have a great day!
Check in: Went to the clinic this week and my blood work was AWESOME! I might get this potassium thingy under control yet! Also showed a 2 lb loss from last month and vital statistics were great!
Logging is still something I need to get a better grasp on. It's all about taking the time for me and letting go of taking care of everyone else for a change.
Sara....good luck on the unpacking. Sounds like you will have more peace in your new "nest". Congrats to all who are celebrating milestones!
Rock on!
Thanks msmeg for the link to your blog I will check it out.
Glad to know your move went well Sara.
Weekly check-in: I did great last week with my goals. I'm really happy with myself this round. We will have to get a gym membership for the next 3 months to keep training together (hubby and me). It's ragweed season and he is very allergic. I don't like the gym, too many reasons to put it off or procrastinate. Plus at this time of the year I really prefer to be outdoors. But I will make the compromise so we can keep training together.
Have a great week everyone!
Check in- Well, this week I've pretty much accomplished a fat lot of nothing. It's HOT up here in Western WA, and even at night it's just more will than I have to make myself work out in 80* with nearly as high humidity. Add to that, Tristan is cutting not one, but 3 teeth and is being so clingy I'm starting to forget what it feels like not to have 15 pounds on my hip (that counts as exercise, right?). Food is being consumed on the run, and then I've eaten so little during the day that when he finally goes to sleep I pig out. :P Ate out not once but several times this weekend. Sigh.
Peera - we all have those weeks. Don't let it get you down!
I didn't even weigh myself this morning, I really don't want to see the scale go up again.
I hope the weather holds out. I'm supposed to go hiking with a friend tomorrow and I'm really looking forward to it!
Happy Friday!
sorry but I just have to boast: finished my 6th 5k for the month and for the first time I was able to keep jogging the entire way! Also I did a total of 1,750 minutes of exercise, so yes Sara, in answer to your question, I am going to do my 1,500 of regular exercise, and the 5ks won't be part of that, so I'll need to do 1,750 each month, total. That allows 40 minutes for each 5k, or 240 minutes.
Hooray for goals!! Everyone stick with them :)
Figure - awesome job on the 5K! I remember the first time I was able to jog the whole thing without stopping, you feel like you're on top of the world (as you should!). Keep it up. I'm going to try my first 10K run tomorrow, I don't have any illusions that I can do the whole thing without stopping but I know if I keep at it I will eventually.
Hooray for goals is right!
Keep it up everyone!
