Wagon Jumpers - March 22 - 28th, 2009 (Closed, Waiting List Available)

Quote  |  Reply

Welcome

(If you are interested in being on the waiting list, please read below and e-mail me. We currently have a waiting list of 4 people.)

Welcome to the Wagon Jumpers weekly thread. We are a group of CC members who have identified that one of our main challenges with achieving our weight loss, maintenance or general health goals is consistency.

This thread is designed to encourage long term commitment to our goals by publicly declaring them and asking the other members of this thread to hold us accountable. The primary focus of wagon jumpers is not how much weight you have lost, or need to loose, but what you need to do on a daily basis to meet your long term goals.

There are two rules for Wagon Jumpers:

1. All members must post once per week between Sunday and Friday.

2. All members must check the thread for members who have not posted by Saturday (a short list is posted on Thursday) or are on the MIA list on Sunday and send them a polite and positive message to stay involved in the group and on track with their goals.

If you would like to be a member of this thread please see the guidelines below and send me a PM if you are still interested (there may be a waiting list).

Medium Size Group = Some Time Commitment

The original idea of Wagon Jumpers was to create a close community where participants could get to know each other and hopefully form virtual-life and perhaps even physical-life bonds to create a support network as they attempted long term weight loss.

We quickly discovered that this was impossible with an 'always open' group as there were too many people coming and going. For this reason the group is capped at 30 participants.

A medium sized group means that we have an active thread that produces between 40 - 60 posts per week. Members do not need to read / respond to every post every week. I do notice that those who respond regularly do tend to keep their goals top of mind, and have a better chance to achieve them. I estimate the average time spent by an active member on Wagon Jumpers to be between 1-2 hours per week.

If you are looking for an always open group  on CC there are several that operate by different weight criteria, similar motivational patterns etc... There are also many small groups that cap their numbers between 4-10 people to keep the group more intimate, and easier for members to keep up with.

Interested in Joining?

General Guidelines for Joining

1. Are you a wagon jumper?

Do you know how to loose weight, you often have success but then you find yourself loosing interest in your plan, or sabotaging your plan. It's not the "how" to loose weight that is the problem, it's the "how" to stay motivated.

2. Do you have a long way to go?

This group is designed so that members can get to know each other and support each other. Ideally you are planning to be a CC member and part of this forum for at least 6 months or more to achieve your goals and hopefully stay in motivation for a further 6 months or more.

Yes. This is, a long term plan.

3. Do you have the time?

This is a medium sized group, the thread does move fairly quickly each week. If you do not have regular internet access this is likely not the group for you.

Still interested?

Send Supersized a PM. (Please do not reply on the thread)

An overview will be sent to you, you will have a chance to ask questions and an invitation will be sent to you once a spot is open.

Lee-Anne Good job on eating well, try to find some time in there for you.

Maureen I would really like some of that nice weather right about now. But, we're slowly slowly getting to a Canadian summer (small consolation). Sounds like you are getting yourself ready to get back into the swing of things.

Denise That's a good question about the ambiotic fluid etc... and how much weight that holds. The 9 months up and 9 months down is actually a good way to look at it, although the first few months will be very difficult to do anything but take care of the little one.

Jen That's one of the reasons I want to focus on the motivational guru aspect of this group. I think there are lots of groups on here where you can go and talk about your journey for as long as you are on the wagon. And then us wagon jumpers sort of drift off, and if we do have the courage to go back to the thread then we do so sort of sheepishly feeling a bit guilty. Or more likely we try a different thread. I think if we accept the basic premise here that we are working on this that it will take time and that all of us will be 'off' now and then and it's the groups job or at least part of it to try to encourage people back then it becomes a learning experience rather than a source of shame. Or at least I hope that's how it works. All a grand experiment in my mind at the moment.

Cheers,

Sara.

Denise- HI there. I wanted to share my pregnancy weightgain with you. I gained 40lbs with my pregnancy, 5lbs more than I should have and my son was born at an average/normal weight of 7lbs 8 1/3 oz. Much of the weight is fluid. I left the hospital at 170lbs and within 3 days had lost nearly 20lbs of fluid. Once my son was born and I'm sure you'll find this as well, you are so busy that your not thinking about food, you're thinking about the baby, bottles/breastfeeding, diapers, diapers, diapers....It didn't take me long to get back down to my pre-baby weight. I made the mistake of freaking out a few days after I was home and tried to do some pilates and ended up pulling a muscle...I definitely didn't give myself enough time to "bounce back" and heal. 9 months on and 9 months off is definitely the way to go.

Sara- I think that you're right on with your assessment of this thread.

Doing some abs today and back to the gym tomorrow!!!

Hi Everyone,

Sorry for the delay in posting, for some reason I thought I had already, must be the fever Smile Yes, I have been sick since Sunday night. I did take Monday off but unfortunately in my situation I cannot afford to miss work as I don't really have a back up and work will just keep piling up. So good news is that due to the fact that I've been sick I haven't had a huge appetite and seem to finally be down a few pounds. Bad news is that I have only managed 1 walk this week and no running. I am hoping that I don't end up losing ground that I made on my endurance and I will still be on track to run the 10K in June.

I will try and get personal feedback posted tomorrow.

Raven

Thanks msmeg for poking me... I'm so tired that I don't think I can do justice to the topic now.  It's 12:30 am and we are still working.  Got to get my staff their new teaching schedules by Saturday.  It's the end of the year in terms of school here.  School ended on Mar. 24th, and the new school year starts on April 1st.

Many people are transfered in their jobs, and our student's are moving their lesson times and days around so much we can hardly keep track.  Also, new students are coming in, so tons of paperwork and preparations....

Checking in is easy.  I haven't done any of my goals this last week...  Just a total flopFrown

More tomorrow on the assignment for the week.

WOW - first time ever! I have never had to be reminded to check in here! Some may figure, "yep, she's finally crashed... her wagon is totalled... she is in ICU"... LOL!

No, I am on track. For sure. Just had a rather big crisis this week. I have had to suddenly pick up all my belongings and go to be with my children, because their father has found himself in some legal trouble, and has been "deactivated"... LOL! I know that's not funny, the poor guy is incarcerated. He is father to my kids. BUT, this I feel is karma raining down, all the way around.

The good news is, I can live with it, and will be finding my new gym (and house... see where my priorities are? LOL!) SOON. In the meantime, I am using my son's weights to do my lifting! LUCKY ME to have a son with weights... hehe.

Sorry for the elusiveness, its been a chore getting back online, but I am here now!!

Y'all take care, and be back soon.

Hope your day, week, month, minute, hour..... is healthgain.
~Julie

Hi everyone,

Just to let you all know that I have read the thread and will be posting more tomorrow. Classic WJ behavior, taking on too much at one time. My wedding is in 3 weeks, so my availability will be going down for a while too.

Welcome Thesilverstar to Waggon Jumpers! This is the best thing on CC,

Thanks Sara for the gentle reminder.

More tomorrow.

Raven Feel better soon, get as much rest and liquid as you can.

Kathy Sounds like a very busy time, I hope things get back to normal next week when classes are in.

Julie Sounds like a big upheaval, but you sound happy to be with your kids. I hope you all have a great time together.

Germaica Let me know if you need some time off, just let me know what date you will be back, I will put a note by your name and you will not be expected to check in during that time, and you will not be put on the MIA list.

Weekly check-in: I exercised 3 times last week, so I meet my goal. The warmer weather is really helping to motivate me. Logging my calorie intake is a bit boring for me right now. Since I'm not limiting my calorie intake at the moment, I tend not to bother to write down what I've eaten. I will have to review this goal for the next 12 week challenge to make it more interesting.

Weekly topic: What I have found most motivating is how I'm feeling, both physically and emotionally, since I have started this journey. Since the start of the 12 week challenge, I have been more active, keeping track and reporting on how much exercise I have been doing has really helped me. I have more energy and stamina, I sleep better and am less stressed. I can do more fun activities and my emotions are also more stable. I remind myself every day that the exercise has real benefits for me and that if I stop I will go back to the way I felt before. Tired, irritated, even depressed sometimes. And I'm not even doing crazy long exercise sessions. Just walking for an hour or using the mini-stepper for 20 minutes, 3 to 4 times a week. Reminding myself of the benefits of this health-gain journey and that if I stop I will go back to how I was before, helps me stay motivated and on track. Well most of the time (lol) which is still pretty good. The Wagon Jumpers thread also has been a great source of motivation for me. Being accountable to you guys is the best. Keeping track of what I'm doing, finding comfort and camaraderie is great. Also surrounding myself with health literature and TV shows like The Biggest Loser helps. It keeps my mind in the right place and I can see real people with real (I think) results.

Sara I will let you know shortly when I won't be able to check in on the thread, do to wedding prep and our honeymoon in NY.

Have a great health-gain weekend everyone.

First of all THANKS GERMAICA and SARA for reminding me to check in.  I have found that if I dont check in on Sunday mornings then it is very easy to get carried away with other things.

Last week was my spring break and man, o man it was difficult to stay on track.  I had a girsl trip to the  beach that had lots of drinking and eating out and also had troubbl eating healthy at home.  It reminded me that I really need to get a consistant eatin routine down before the summer b/c then I will eat, eat, eat since I will be home all the time.  I only worked out when I created my garden(my legs felt like I was doind crunches all day long!) and when I rode my bike to my boyfriends work to get out car(it was a 40 minute ride though).  I am going today to check out another gym in town that is cheaper and alot of my co-workers go there.  My current gym is closer to home but I only have one buddy who has a completely diff. schedule than me and it is $10 more a month.  I am hoping that if I switch it will be easier for me.

My motivation...I am constantly struggling with motivation.  What I think about often is how I felt about myself when I was 20 pounds lighter at 150.  I know that according to my dr. and the experts I would still be considered overweight at that point but when I was there I felt sexy, healthy and happy about my image.  I am tired of beating myself up over not working out and eating wrong and am ready to feel good about my body again!

Jen, thanks for sharing your story--makes me feel A LOT better.

Interestingly, I found in a book that at this point (18 weeks), there's about 11 ounces of amniotic fluid.  So, about 2 pounds of my 10 pound gain so far is a result of baby, placenta, and amnio.  Not counting extra blood volume, water retention, and breast size, I think that I'm doing a damn good job of keeping on track!  Yippee for me!

Germaica, the last weeks before the wedding can be very hectic.  Remember to relax and enjoy your day--it was by far the best day of my life!

Be well everyone!

Denise

Well, the fiasco has come to an end.

Never in my life have I known someone personally who was arrested and incarcerated by mistake. BUT, now I can say I do. My ex was in there for 4 days, when the investigator came and said, "We seem to have made a mistake, you are free to go." - I am like... ok, so who is supposed to compensate a person for missing 4 entire days of their life? I guess it's ok for the government to just say "Oops."

I am home now, and things are back to normal. It has become apparent however that I will be needing to move at the end of April. Which is something I have been considering anyway. It just seemed that I was getting what I wanted a little earlier than planned. Life is crazy. That's all I have to say about it.

*SIGH* Now, I do seem to have lost some weight this past week. My pants are about falling off me. They were fitting perfectly too. LOL! THIS is not a bad thing. I haven't been on the scale or measured, but I suppose the fast pace kept me relying on protein bars, juices, Redbull, and yogurt as my food sources. I simply refuse to hit a drive thru for fast food. I knew what would happen.

I did however fail to maintain the exercise this week. I lifted with my son's weights twice, but generally, I was way too tired by the time I should have been exercising that I simply crashed almost every evening. I got home last night, and went to bed, and slept until 1pm today. What a week.

Back on track next week, and I will evaluate in detail, exact percentages of success with my goals. I am very very interested to see!!

Hope everyone is well, and living the healthgain life. Be back soon.

~Julie

Hi,

I know that this is Saturday and I am making it kinda right under the wire... Maybe.. I will be the first one on Sunday.

It has been Spring Break here in Oregon so I have been dealing with the wierd schedules etc. I am also still recovering from this flu, etc.

Anyways, not at all on schedule but I will say that I have not been eating if I am not hungry so I have been eating less.

I guess my motivations have been on the feeling of how I feel about myself vs. how others want me to be. When I was younger I wanted to be thin to fit in and have others see me as beautiful and now I want to feel alive and living and able to do anything I want (within reason).

I have been trying ditch the scale and follow the clothes... We'll see - it should be easy since the scale causes me so much anxiety.

BTW, we adopted a 1 year old golden retriever from a shelter. She is pretty perfect - can't figure out why anyone would let her go but she was found wandering a town outside Portland. They cleaned her up and lo' and behold she was a pure bred Golden. Sweetest disposition.  Also she is my new running buddy - my husband is happy about that as he is always worries about my need to go to do the most remote places in the forest... Honestly, anyone who knows Goldens will understand they will lick their enemies to death and that is about it!!

Germaica I've been off the exercise cycle for almost 12 weeks now, I really need to remind myself of everything you said as my moods are very affected by my lack of exercise. This will definitely have to be a goal for me in the next round.

Jessica I  find that when my image hangs on a number, which is always does to some point, that it's difficult to get up the motivation to act when I don't feel positive about myself, or what I'm doing. It may help to find something to be very positive about in your activities or what you are currently doing to give you the motivation to do what you need to do to get back to a body image where you felt positive. It feels a bit chicken before egg and so on, but I find that when we don't feel positive about our bodies then we don't want to do the things we need to do to get them in shape and healthy.

Julie Give yourself a break, sounds like you have a very hectic upheaval of a week and you did quite well considering.

Carol Congratulations on the puppy! I think it's sad to say but a I suspect there will be a lot of cases of animal abandonment in these recession times. My partner and I found the most beautiful little Aussie Shepherd puppy in the park a couple of years back, we were sure he was lost out of someone's yard, we put flyers up, put him on the humane society and SPCA websites, no one claimed him. We ended up keeping him and he's such a well behaved dog it's incredible. I hope you are feeling better soon.

Sara.
