Walking and Cycling
Hello,
I'm considering buying myself a bicycle for Christmas this year. I was wondering how they're comparable to walking. Of course, it's probably going to come down to how much effort you put in. However, are the calories burned about the same for both activities? In other words, is it worth buying?
Thanks
A bike is very worth buying. What you will find is that you will use your muscles differently to walking so expect the first few weeks to be fairly tiring.
The calorie burning potential for a bicycling is very similar to that of walking/running. But what you may find is that you are able to get into the higher calorie burning areas more easily on a bike than you can running because the bike is non weight bearing.
Cycling is a great activity. That being said make sure you get appropriate bike for what you want to do. A lot of people go out and buy the cheapest one they can get, usually MTB from Wall Mart. Those bikes are not very comfortable, heavy, poorly assembled, and not enjoyable to ride period. So people put them in the garage and stop riding.
P.S. Not sure if I am allowed to do this but... A great resource if you want to get in to cycling: www.bikeforums.net
