Walking the Dog

Quote  |  Reply
Walking my little Whippet x Aussie terrior dog is a gret way of excercising. It is a chance to get to know my neighbourhood as well. Jessie loves her walks and for the time being I am concentrating on just the walking. I weigh over 108kg (237.6lbs) at this very moment and all I can manage is walking my dog. My body tells me that is what I can do for the time being. When I reach 80kg (176lbs) I will then start gym and aerobix workouts. What you guys think?

I think thats great. You go girl. I would suggest that you give yourself a guideline to work towards improvement. For instance, I'm walking a half hour at my lunchtime. I walk 1.2 miles. A little slow but its up and down hills. I want to be able to do it faster and then start added a block at a time as I get faster so I can go farther. When the weather is gross I use an aerobic tape.
Sounds like a good idea. My mom walks her dog before work and after work weather permitting. It's funny b/c most times the DOG gets tired before she does.

I rent tapes from the library to offer some variety with my workout routine. You could also give that a try.

Good luck!!!
Walking is great exercise for a lot of reasons. In your case, good for you and Jessie. The more you walk the faster you get to your goals. Aerobic exercise is also great but has more potential for injuries. As for gym for muscle conditioning and stretching, walking is always a good cardio choice for balance. If you enjoy it and do it often and long enough, walking is as good for you as running without the impact to your joints. I think you're totally on the right track. Good for you!
I manage to get in 3 miles 5 mornings a week and my legs are looking great but am thinking about adding weights...to help my arms..Any one know if those 1lb wrist wraps would help..or maybe even 2lb ?
This one is for Bethy

I'm down with the dog-walking :-) My sister's dog is a pill, always into everything. I've started walking him to the park and back every day, three miles. I can feel my lower half starting to tighten up already, and he crashes hard in the evening. Makes life easier for everyone ;-) I know when I get the weight down to the place where the knees can handle a little jogging, he'll be ready. It helps to have an exercise partner, especially one who won't make excuses to stay home and watch TV. I also don't mind the smiles from the cute runners and bikers -- my sis says the dog is a guy magnet. We'll see :-)

Best wishes to everyone.

Hi noriea you go girl...........Yeah the dog is the best walking partner. Jessie (my little four legged creature) is loyal, mischievious, and is always ready for that walk. We walked a new route yesterday just near the bay. This is the first time in her 6 years of life that she saw watter. Little bit aprehensive but she did well.
My dog loves to run but he is not real good for walking. He's a blue heeler and has obnoxious amounts of energy lol. He's rather large for his breed and all muscle and boy can he pull me along. I let him run and we throw a frisbee but I can't walk him on a leash unless I want to get drug along and risk losing a limb :) I wish he would calm down enough to walk. I've trained him to do everything else well, but he doesn't walk anywhere he runs, constantly, even to go from the living room to his food dish he tears across the house at full speed... LoL.
What u been feeding him lol.....Is he desexed.......if not perhaps you should think of doing it as that seems to calm them down. Had a poodle once who was a casanova. One night he casonovad toomuch that the owner of the other dog hosed Boris (my dog) down and dragged him to our house. We got him desexed the next day lol and he calmed down considerably.

Poor Boris... My heart goes out to him. LOL

Larry
Well larry

He lived a long and fullfilled life (still humped everything in sight) even after the operation lol.........

Boris died 6 years ago, in my arms from old age.......We now have Jessie. She will never replace Boris she is her own being.
LoL

actually my dog hasn't been, but the obnoxious amounts of energy is a characteristic of his breed (they're cattle dogs, workers)

They were bred to have lots of energy and work hard and boy I guess those genetics took with this dog because you can't wear him out :).

I may look into getting him some surgery though eventually to see if it helps, but the neighbors haven't had to hose him down yet ;)

He's also still a puppy, he'll be a year old next month and maybe adulthood itself will help him out :)
A cattle dog is a fun breed of dog and to boot a puppy wow you will have u hands full with him.....Tell me how u went.

Sue
Hi Sue,

Sorry to hear about Boris. We have always had dogs. Have 3 now. And you're right, they are all unique and special. They also make great walking companions. Woof woof!
