Walking EVERYWHERE

Quote  |  Reply

I think I'm just being paranoid, but since i've stopped running (no energy with work and I don't have time to do it in the morning when I want to...) I just walk everywhere, at least 2 hours everyday, plus whatever I do at home, cooking, ironing, watching the kids etc.  Is this enough?  I generally feel pretty good if I do go for a run, never out of breath, but I guess I just worry that Its never enough exercise!

Define "enough" - what's the end result you have in mind?

For health and general fitness, sure - it's probably enough. to successfully win the IronMan; probably not. It's hard to say whether what you're doing is enough to reach your goals without knowing what those goals are, you know ;)

I love walking and dislike running... so as someone with a body conditioned exclusively for walking, I can mention a few differences. I'm sure I'm doing some good things for my heart rate and all that through walking, but I do get winded by a few flights of stairs or having to run at all. I'm not out of shape and I know I can walk seven miles in two hours, up and down hills, but my heart rate is still higher than I gather a runner's is.

I have heard that higher impact  and weight-bearing exercise, even for only 10 minutes a day, is important for keeping your bone density up. If you've got a history of osteoporosis in your family, it might be worth thinking about in the long run.

This is just a thought, but what about involving the kids in 15 minutes of jump-roping a day? Fun for them, impact and heart-rate worthy for you.

I know its not anaerobic, but enough to keep some sort of a base.  My competitive days are over, no ironmans for me, or division I rowing....but to keep a healthy base.  Im a team person, i need a team to motivate me to work hard, otherwise I can just keep telling myself that I don't feel like it.  I eat really well here in Italy, so as long as I'm active, I won't worry!

i read somewhere that, as far as health benefits go, there's not much of a difference between walking and running.  i would imagine that you'd burn more calories running for an hour as opposed to walking for an hour, plus you'd travel a greater distance.  but running a mile vs walking a mile isn't very different.  i could be wrong, but i did read that in some health article.

i hate running but love walking and i managed to lose 30 pounds and drop my total cholesterol to 70 by walking 30-60 minutes a day, along with a healthy diet.
