Hi all,
I'm curious how many of you walk as your primary form of daily excercie. I'd like to know how many miles/kilometers you walk, and how long it takes you.
I'm also thinking about buying a pedometer (god, I feel like such a nut....)! I don't really want to spend more than I have to on one, but I would like it to be reliable. Does anyone use of one these? If so, do you/did you find it helpful, or am I better off to invest in a heartmonitor... or nothing at all?
I try to walk as much as possible. 10,000 steps is my benchmark for a 'lightly active' day - a figure recommended by most doctors as the required daily average for good health. Pedometers are pretty cheap and, whilst not pinpoint accurate, they're a reasonably good guide. I only spend about £5 ($7) on mine maximum.... Clipped to the waistband they're fairly unobtrusive, whereas I'd feel like a complete nerd/hypochondriac going around attached to a heart monitor!
I walk almost every day, at least 6 days a week. I walk 3 miles each day and it takes me 1 hour.
I just invested in the Gowear fit. It is pretty accurate. Tells me how many cals I burn throughout the day, how many steps I take a day, my sleep pattern, and my physical activity, i'm not sure if you want to spend 150, but so far Im loving it.
You can go to gowearfit.com and also amazon.com has alot of reviews on it.
I walk between 3-5 miles a day. More if I can.
If you buy a pedometer look for one that uses an accelerometer instead of a pendulum to count steps. They are much much more accurate. The Omron is one of the best out there but it will only set you back 20 or so. Since I often walk 40 miles a week (or more) that is minor per mile cost.
If you are not sure you will stick with it the cheaper ones will do but they are not usually accurate and the plastic is often brittle.
Thanks all! I walk (according to map my walk) about 5-6 miles a day (I'm a student living downtown and walk everywhere). I think I'll go out and try to find a pedometer for less than $15.00.
Thanks Again!
Connie
The thing with the pedometer is that it makes you want to go for a walk, just to get that number up!.
So even wearing a really cheap one does you good...
I've been doing 10-12 miles lately. To work, out to lunch, from work. It comes down to how many steps you take, and for most people 10,000 steps is about 5 miles. I don't use a pedometer since for a lot of my walking there are mileposts (old railroad lines converted to biking/walking trails) which allow me to figure my pace, how much distance I've covered, and from time to time how many steps in a mile. For me 4 miles per hour is really moving - around 130 steps per minute - faster than that I'd need to start jogging. 3.5 mph is comfortably fast. Today I'll total about 3 hours.
I count walking as 70 calories per mile over and above BMR at 165 lbs weight, and adjusts in direct proportion to weight (ie at 150 lbs, the burn would be 10% lower). This count was accurate for my weight loss, and continues to be accurate for weight maintenance.
This amount of walking allows a few extra cookies a day in my diet.....
4mph is pretty hard to sustain for me too. I feel the urge to break into a run and get it over with.
that is pretty good walking thhq! You deserve the cookies.
Is my sodium intake too low?
You have nothing to worry about because sodium deficiency is extremely rare. In fact, there is not even an recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA... Read more
