When I go out on my 4 mile walk, and I can feel my hands and fingers swelling. What causes this?
Answer
Hands and feet swell as a normal reaction to walking. Gravity, motion, and muscle action cause fluid to pool in the extremities. Swelling is worse in hot, humid weather and with longer, faster walks. You might minimize swelling if you bend your arm at a 90 degree angle and swinging it back and forth from a relaxed shoulder when you walk. It also helps to raise your arms, stretch your fingers and make a fist from time-to-time.
