Walking Off the Weight 2
Hello all!
I credit my taking up walking, in conjuction with the awesome cc, with my weight loss success thus far this summer..... I know there are many others out there, walking away the pounds, the stress, the stuff in life that needs to be sweated out, so join us here! We had discussions in WOTW1 from where we liked to walk to how to improve the walking work out after it had gotten too easy, blisters and bras, to how to get the SO to come along with you, so if it's related to walking, it can go here! ( :
Just FYI, but I think I am offically a "wogger" now -- I almost can't say that word without laughing (credit Jess who found it). So let's say walkers, wanna be walkers who need encouragement, woggers, even joggers if they promise not to make fun! =P Hope to see allmy old friends here + and a lot of new ones too!
So---Rock on with your walkin', girls and boys! --Olivia

I'm still here, and may I continue to say I'm still exhausted? After mapping my walk across the bridge this morning (using Goggle Pedometer), I see that the walk was 2.5 miles and that I burned 263 calories. That usually doesn't bother me, as that's a normal walk for me, but it's the heat and humidity! I'm now looking forward to Fall.
I just saw the news also and had no idea the storm this morning was that bad.

olivia i don't know i am going to really concentrate on portion control & keeping track of what i'm eating. See if i am slacking ( i know i have been ). School has started back so i am walking during break times while watching kids but haven't been doing any jogging or anything afterwards the last couple of days because i am still sooo busy canning i start at 4:30 go until school time come home and do more so my time is much more limited.
hey, i have to read the rest of your posts just wanted to ask if i can join? I'm a sporadic walker, working towards regular/frequent walker, working towards 'wogger' =)
Can I join too? I used to walk 5miles/hr 3 yrs ago when I was 180 and now Im 248(down from 261) so I m starting it again and for good .Im thinking of 10000 steps prog any suggestions...
Walkers, woggers, joggers---whatever. ( : Everyone's welcome here! Hi to kiwi and simar!
I know walking is what kicked me into high gear with the weight loss, so lace up the old shoes and get out there whenever you can! I like that it's free and easy. ( ;
simar---if you've done it once, you can do it again. I am a goal girl, so my first day I set out to walk as far as I could (hoping I could make it 20 songs worth on my radio). Next thing was to map out some routes, so I knew how far I was going in a certain amount of time, etc.... I walk with 2 lb hand weights in an effort to get the arm flab under control for a bridesmaid gig September 8th, but that doesn;t work for everyone..... I think just get out there and walk around the dang block as long as you can, or wear a watch and say at least 30 minutes, or for me, seriously, the thing that worked the best was to use the music as my number. 20 songs at approximately 3 minutes a song = 60 minutes, just seemed like something concrete that worked for me. Like a light at the end of the tunnel.....I can't think of one time I stopped in the middle of a walk and went home after 20 on the dot, but it's a mind trick. We all have them!
(kiwi---is wogger the funiest word ever?)

I can be compulsive about anything...even walking! I arrived early at the park where I was meeting friends for a picnic and Shakespeare performance lats evening, so I decided to walk around the lake! Now, I had sandals on and it was late afternoon heat/humidity, so I certainly didn't wog...but walking takes me over!
I really had to talk myself out of getting up at 4 AM to go out walking! Being out so late the night before, I really needed the sleep. But boy do I miss that good feeling I get from walking in the AM. I have an early evening meeting tonight in a nice neighborhood, so I'm planning a walk afterwards.
I chuckled when you mention the "80's image"...that was me back then! Fanny pack, Walkman, weights...often 5 miles/day, 7 days/week! See what I mean about compulsive...lol?

Hey so, so much for being pumped up to walk yesterday... I, like southfork live in nyc and had a horrible time getting home yesterday. Then when I did get home after 1 hr delay my sis-n-law/bestfriend was there and had already made dinner yipee for me....almost...well she made fried shrimps and FRICKIN FRENCH FRIES yes I could have killed her skinny a** but couldn't because i love her to death LOL anyway I blamed it on my hubby who should have called me to atleast bring myself some veggies. Then after dinner it was so hot that I could go out walking and stayed in an rode my bike only 20min so I am not proud of myself today but vow to work off those damn shrimp and chips. I am going out on my lunch break today to buy me a grill pan. Yes I know I don't have the money but its on sale at crate and barrel for $30. So I will do a power walk there and back I should burn off atleast 150 cal.
lol ya olivia, i had never heard that term before this forum. it's easier to say than 'i'm going walk/jogging' though =)
morning all!!! another night of no walking, other than walking from the car to the stadium and back, at least back was uphill. So another morning on the eliptical, so boring..... I miss walking outside.
South and mom - I saw were there were even tornados in NY, which is really strange - you never hear of that.
Hopefully we get a break in the weather soon, tired of this hot stuff!!! I want fall weather, great for wogging!!!! LOL

hey vcooper. Yes, they have confirmed that it was a tornado that touched down in Brooklyn. Totally unheard of.
As the weather is much nicer today, with lower humidity, I plan on taking my 30 min. walk later his morning.
BTW everyone, Duke Medical Center last month released a report indicating that their reserach shows that a 30 minute walk to be the optimal length. Interestingly, they found no benefit in a longer workout!

Hmmm, southfork, I read the article, thanks for posting the link. However, I don't think I can comfortably agree that a 30 minute walk is optimal for my goals, based upon this study. Although the 30 minute walk was optimal for dramatically lowered triglyceride levels ( a very good thing), they were only testing for a particular health indicator. This study doesn't really addresses whether or not a 30 minute walk is optimal for weight loss (even though it is helpful in stopping weight gain). I know from my own personal experience, walking 30 minutes a day did not have nearly the effect of a 60 minute walk on my weightloss effort. Anyhow, it is an interesting article and since I am at greater risk of diabetes, I was happy to read that my walking efforts should be thwarting my body's attempt to become diabetic.
Good point wlmich. And I agree that everyone's experience is the best guide. My husband is insulin dependent Type A diabetic, and his doctor told him that the 30 minute walk works best for his needs. But again his needs are different. Rock on that you walk 60 minutes!
Thanks for the encouragement, southfork. Hopefully I will be able to continue the long walk once classes start in the fall. I know I won't be walking on Mondays as I have a class at 9 am, which means I will need to leave home by 7:30 in order to be on time. sigh. It is so stressful when the daily routine has to change! I am not teaching this semester, so I am hoping the work load doesn't get so intense that I stop walking altogether. I must say, I am VERY concerned about that possibility.
Did I mention I am going to Mackinaw Island this weekend? The place that is famous for its fudge?? My mouth starts watering just thinking about it!
southfork -- you are awesome! =) I love the image of everyone walking across the Brooklyn Bridge. I still can't get my head around the tornado in that location. Wow!
vcooper -- I am a (transplanted) Clevelander, too. My husband has been landscaping (he owns a small business) in all this rain! He was nearly washed off the Shoreway in his truck with trailer attached earlier this week. Scary!
Tomorrow is the big day, my first walk in 3 weeks. Can't wait to get back out there.

I ? WALKING! I started about 4 months ago, basicaly to walk some of the energy out of our little Terrier dog but also because my bones are fragile and I can't run or jog. I started out slow and now am up to 40 - 50 minutes about 5 days a week. I still have some pounds to lose and want to get motivated to lose the last 5 - 7 lbs. I know the walking helped me lose the first bit of weight and helps me maintain the weight I am now (135) even when I dont watch my calories.
I know I would feel better if I got back to 125, any one else having trouble losing that LAST 5 - 10 POUNDS???

hi all---how all my New Yorkers/up that directions-ers are doing ok, all safe, etc...
YAY, meg for getting back on the horse, er...you know! ( :
Hello to sparkley stuff---love the nick, and I will for sure be stoked when all I have left to lose is the last 5-10 lbs, but I do know it really can be a lot more difficult when you just have a few vs. the many I have! Hang in there!!! (my mom has a Jack Russell terror -- did I misspell that....? lol)

Hello all from the pacific northwest,
I started back walking about 3 weeks ago and even started a slow jog. Believe me I know it is hard to start, but once you begin, the energy tripples after a good walk. You start thinking about when your next walk will be. For me, I have been walking 2 miles about every other day. I now starting to think about extending the walking further. Somtimes I even walk between the rain drops. LOL

Thanks for the well wishes, it sounds funny, but I'm a little nervous. If my foot starts hurting again I'm going to have to pick some other form of exercise like cycling or swimming and frankly, neither thrills me. We have a treadmill so I can walk morning, noon or night inside or out and I really appreciate that versatility with my kids to chase after... LOL Hmm... maybe I'm a wogger after all. ;)
