Walking Off the Weight 2

Quote  |  Reply
Hello all!

I credit my taking up walking, in conjuction with the awesome cc, with my weight loss success thus far this summer..... I know there are many others out there, walking away the pounds, the stress, the stuff in life that needs to be sweated out, so join us here! We had discussions in WOTW1 from where we liked to walk to how to improve the walking work out after it had gotten too easy, blisters and bras, to how to get the SO to come along with you, so if it's related to walking, it can go here! ( :

Just FYI, but I think I am offically a "wogger" now -- I almost can't say that word without laughing (credit Jess who found it). So let's say walkers, wanna be walkers who need encouragement, woggers, even joggers if they promise not to make fun! =P Hope to see allmy old friends here + and a lot of new ones too!

So---Rock on with your walkin', girls and boys!    --Olivia

Hello again!  been away for a bit, too many things going on in my life (too long to explain- but good things)...       ; Still "wogging" , but not on a consistent basis.   Reading today, you guys have motivated to get my "butt" back out there.  My hubby walked with me the other night (1 lap) and quit.  Said I walked to fast for him, took me 10 minutes longer than normal - because I kept having to wait for him, so he would run ahead and sit down and wait.  silly man!!!!

Hopefully back to normal posting, hard finding the time at work and then packing to move in 2 weeks.

Happy walking!!!

Hi,

Hope everyone is having beautiful autumn weather.  We haven't had a freeze yet.  But it's due anytime, after all this is Montana! I'm watching for those beautiful autumn colors any day now.  I'm feeling much better, now that I've shortened my walks. Happy Walking,

Rachel

Well, so much for my committing to walk last evening....my meeting ran overtime, it was too dark, and no one was available to walk with me (wasn't going alone in unfamiliar territory without a "buddy"!)

So, I got up this AM intent on walking! And although I took the time to make b'fast and pack lunches for BOTH of us (he's "on the road again"), I still made walking (at the Mall due to rain) a priority before going into the office. I was late, but it was too important to me to not walk!

I'll stay in the office a little longer this afternoon to make up for it. And then I'm going for that massage I've been looking forward to!

Hello fellow walkers.  I have discovered new walking motivation after dealing with heat, humidity, ferocious dogs, and rain......I have found a way to get my walking done inside in the glorious AC.  No, I do not have a treadmill because I can't afford one right now.  However, I have some "Walking for fitness" videos by instructor Leslie Sandsone.  I know it doesn't sound like much of a challenge but I can say from experience on treadmills and walking outside that an hour with Leslie is like 2 hours any other way.  It's not just walking in place, it's side steps, kicks, knee lifts, hand weights, and lots of other variations to just your normal every day walk.  I really can work up a sweat and get my heart rate up with her videos.  Anyone else use her videos?

I have! And it's fun!

But since the advent of DVD's, I no longer have a VCR, and a huge collection of exercise videos!!!Frown

Those video's sound like a good workout.  But too aggressive for me with the low back problems that flare up now and then.  Just a few lunges and kicks and I'd be flat on my back with heat packs, lol.  I found I was even over-doing on the walking, so will stay at 5 miles a day now.  The back pain is minimal now, so easing back on the walking was a very good idea.

This morning I took the Nature Valley Granola Bars, family size box of 94 my husband got from Costco, and put it way up high in a cupboard I can't reach!  Dog gone, those are delicious!  I made the mistake of bringing sugar back into my diet and this morning I decided no sugar at all.

I'll even drink my tea plain, no matter how bitter it is.  I get so sluggish and bloated when I eat sweets.  I even took the rest of the orange sherbet out of the freezer and dumped it down the drain.  It may be fat free, but it's full of sugar. And I was dipping into that bucket of sherbet several times a day, a spoonfull here and there, lol.

I have a question for all you woggers on here...I've started adding random 1-2 min jogging spurts to my walks and was wondering what you all are wearing for shoes. After reading so many articles on "learning to run" I know the first thing you need to do is invest in a good pair of running shoes, but I spend most of my time walking with a little bit of running added in and have no intention of training for a marathon. So my question. Do the woggers on here wear running shoes? Walking shoes? Any plain ol' generic tennis shoe? Don't want to injur myself, but also don't want to spend money on some fancy running shoe if what I really need is a fancy wogging shoe.  Any suggestions on shoes in general?
Welcome Moogiesue!

I love Nike and Rebok walking shoes myself, when I can find them at a reasonable price. I'm purely a walker myself, no jogging or running.

Rachel

Welcome moogiesue!

I would suggest "cross trainers". Personally, I find Ryka walking shoes work best for me, and I usually find them at an outlet mall.

I've got a new strategy, since it's too dark to walk at 6AM now. I'll be joining the silver-haired mall-walking folks! I need to determine the distance, but I do both levels of the Mall in about 35 mins. Just a bit sweaty, so I'll keep an extra shirt or to in the closet in my office. If I can refine my morning plan a bit, I may be able to stretch that to 45 mins by doing another round about! And I'm signing up at the Y for my watercises class!

Even with my new strategy, I can walk outside if it's nice...and nice it was this AM!! Only got 30 mins, but they were great mins!

I enjoyed seeing people, especially school children, up and about their morning routines. As a went past the school parking lot, a teacher remarked "wish I could power walk like that!" Wow, was that me she was talking about? Then I realized that's exactly what I was doing: Arms pumping, heart thumping, sweat producing power-walking!! Boy, what a great feeling to know I've come this far in 6 weeks!

Got a 40 min walk  outdoors before breakfast this AM. Looks like it'll be too cold and wet over the weekend.

It's paying off big time...down 3 more pounds this AM!!

Hey everyone. It's old me, southfork, with a new name, as i had trouble switching over to the new version. I gained a couple of pounds last month, so it's time to get serious again. I'm about to start off on a good 30-40 minute walk. About walking shoes- I really like Merrills, esp. the ones made for aquatic walking/running. I got some help with this last summer. My feet are a little wide, so the shoe store people recommended this versatile shoe. I like that it's also cool, lightweight, and breathable. There are several different versions.
Morning everyone.  Hey, Terinyc, I have wide feet also and size 10, and have worn a men's jogging shoe since I started jogging 25 yrs ago, as they are wider.

I've settled into a comfortable form, since giving up jogging and find 3 miles is best for me.  (walking)

It's starting to get cool here but since I work up a sweat powerwalking like I did jogging will keep wearing my shorts long as I can, which is usually until the end of November.  Once my path in the woods gets covered with ice, it's April before I can get back out there.

I was going to try and squeeze a treadmill in here, but that spot is taken up by my new bike, so I don't know.  Theres a spare bedroom full of boxes stacked as high as I can reach.  don't think I can squeeze anything in there.  Will have to think about it.

weight: 181.8

I've gotten to the point where I do both levels of the Mall in 30 mins! So I guess I'll try adding another round of one level to get in more time/miles!

Starting my water aerobics tomorrow too! Actually took a membership at the Y, so I may even look at using the free weights or something.

But still like walking the best!

Everyone must be out walking...this board is so quiet :)

I enjoyed my watercises class, which included walking in 3.5-4.5 feet of water. The resistance felt so good, and I expected sore muscles this morning. But the "ground" walking must have toned me enough not to suffer :)

Hi Ladies,

I've not had much time to be online lately, and sure have missed CC.`The weather has been a little chilly here and I haven't walked in a few days.  But I hear it's going to warm up!  Hope you all are doing well and enjoying your walks.

Rachel
I was so happy when I weighed this morning and the scale said 107.8!   It has really got me revved up and ready to get out there and get back with the program, five miles a day, everyday as long as the weather holds out.  I've got a goal to lose 9 1/2 lbs by October 25th, which would finally put me under 100 lbs, 98 to be exact.  I've missed the 90's so much.  I've got 2 pictures on the fridge.  One when I was 93 lbs, and one at 115. I've also got low calorie snack ideas taped on the fridge too.  It really seems to help!  What a gorgeous day it is today, so I'm going to get outside and walk.  Have a great weekend everyone!

Rachel
alone on my path in the woods, by the river, tried walking backwards, to use different muscles, and alone, in case I fell or looked silly.  I could feel it later even tho I only went what had to be a few blocks.

weights been 178, so close to my first goal of 175.  whew.  Some size 14s are loose...........it's been so long I didn't keep any of the smaller clothes, besides lived in Fla. so nothing would work up north here.  To start looking at size 12's I will feel like I am shopping for someone else, not me.
Ohio,

I tried walking backwards myself a few weeks ago.  How ackward and strange that felt, lol.  I don't know what got into me to try that...........oh now I remember!  A neighbor had stopped by and said he saw mountain lion tracks on his property. Yikes!  So I was out walking on our property and clapping my hands to scare it away just in case, lol..............then I turned around cuz I was paranoid he might be behind me!

That's when I found myself walking backwards I guess.  I haven't heard of any sightings, but it sure has been on my mind.  We live way out in the boonies, although there are neighbors close by.  I'm hoping the mountain lion has moved on because no one has mentioned anything in a while.  Don't think I could walk backwards on a regular basis, lol.

Rachel
Rachel:  I walked backwards again, just a little, and can really feel it in the back of my thighs.  Good!

Mountain lion?  I would want to carry something  for protection.  I carry a little pepper spray with me, I have a "Dog repellant" spray for my bike and also a pocket knife.  Don't think you'll find a "Lion repellant" at Walmart tho.  Do you have a dog you could take with you, to alert you if one was around?

I'm suffering 'burnout'.  Was going to wait till I was at 175 to relax but got to 178 and have to start taking weekends off, or go nutty.
