Walking Off the Weight 2

Quote  |  Reply
Hello all!

I credit my taking up walking, in conjuction with the awesome cc, with my weight loss success thus far this summer..... I know there are many others out there, walking away the pounds, the stress, the stuff in life that needs to be sweated out, so join us here! We had discussions in WOTW1 from where we liked to walk to how to improve the walking work out after it had gotten too easy, blisters and bras, to how to get the SO to come along with you, so if it's related to walking, it can go here! ( :

Just FYI, but I think I am offically a "wogger" now -- I almost can't say that word without laughing (credit Jess who found it). So let's say walkers, wanna be walkers who need encouragement, woggers, even joggers if they promise not to make fun! =P Hope to see allmy old friends here + and a lot of new ones too!

So---Rock on with your walkin', girls and boys!    --Olivia

I did some wonderful walking this weekend at the campground in the Alleghany Mountains of PA. Sure was great to be able to walk uphill without thinking I'd die from lack of oxygen or heart thumping out of my chest!

We tried biking, but surprisingly, my legs just couldn't push the bike uphill. Totally different muscles from walking!

I like walking backwards in the pool, but never tried it on land. Maybe now it's so dark in the AM, I should try it when everyone else is still sleeping...lol!!

Hi Ohio and Kris,

Where is everyone else, lol?  I think we've been deserted!  I'm thining about carrying a pocket knife with me, just in case a mean old mountain lion does pounce on me.  Not that I'd probably stand a snowballs chance in heck if one really did, lol.  Yes, I do have a dog, but walking with a dog slows me down too much.  I really like to walk brisk, and keep up the pace.  So I'll just take my chances I guess.

Is it every beautiful here, with all the changing colors!  Whoever said Montana comes in 3 colors is nuts, lol.  ( Green, Brown, White )  This may not be Vermont, but it's pretty this time of year anyway!  Happy Walking!

Rachel

Walked a whole hour this AM...but only did 3 miles :( I needed the walk because of all the munchies I'd consumed while watching my grandson! But I'd also twisted my knee a bit while playing with him, so it slowed me down a bit. Think it's gonna be OK.

Miss everyone! Are you all out walking??

Hi,

Such a beautiful week, but now a rainy dreary weekend.  Darn it!  Definitely not walking weather at all.  The rain definitely helped usher in fall.  The damp wet leaves are falling from the trees. Such pretty colors, but they sure didn't last nearly long enough.  September is my very favorite month, but much too short.  Have a good weekend everyone!

Rachel
rachel:  yes, I've seen photos of Montana and agree it is beautiful.  It's getting harder to dress.  Left the house early, and it was 40 and dressed too warm, got hot during the day.  Layering is the answer.

I haven't walked all week, so looking forward to getting out today.

I give myself 2 days off..Tuesday, because I go to watercises in the evening, and Sundays, just because ! It's raining this morning anyway, so I enjoyed a few extra minutes cuddling before getting up.

My knee sems to be OK, except for going down stairs. But I'm grateful that's all it turned out to be.

September flew by in the blink of an eye. I love October for the colors and cooler weather, though it's unusually warm here this week.

Somehow I missed a day.  I thought today was October 1st!  My husband had 3 days off and I guess I lost track of the days.  Boy am I glad he has gone back to work!  I really slack off on my healthy eating and my walking program on his days off, lol.  There is always so much to get done around the house and yard.

I'm doing my fall deep cleaning around the house, so everything is in order for the holidays. Thanksgiving will be here before we know it.  Sure hope the nice weather holds out so I can continue walking.  Maybe it won't snow til mid November?  Lol.  Not a chance.  This is Montana!  Happy walking!

Rachel

Had a marvelous weekend camping, and I most enjoyed hiking around the lake! Just over 3 miles, hilly terrain, and spectacular views! Wish I'd brought the camera!

Hi,

I've been gone from the forum a couple of months, but I am back again.    Where is everyone? And how are you doing on your walking program?  Do I ever have a lot of reading to do to catch up.  Hope everyone is enjoying the holiday season!

Rachel
Apparently we've lost our walkers?!  Well I am back on track, after honestly taking a few months off.  Bad idea.  I gained  back 10 lbs, and I swear about the same amount in inches!  :(  I had such a good excuse not to walk.  ( It's winter time and I hate the cold.)

I'd spent May through September walking and lost lots of weight and the same in inches.  I was within just a few lbs of my goal and I quit walking and resumed a few of my old bad habits. Then of course factor into that the holidays. Darn!  But January 1st I launched my walking program again and so am no on day 10.  I bundled up in layers, and found out it wasn't too cold to walk after all!  :)   I've lost two lbs, hooray!  I've also implimented my healthy eating habits again.  I'm going to try and check into calorie count everyday, and I am also as well keeping a diet journal.........and keeping tabs on my calores.  Happy New Year all you walkers!  Rachel
January 12th, Day 12 of my walking program, and I am up to an hour now at a very brisk pace.  It's so good to be back on track!
hi everyone!

i think ive lost the most weight by walking with 45 sec of jogging in between the walking... i use soup cans as weight... also you can go to a sports store and get this weights that wrap around your arms or ankles...anyone else have any tips on maximizing time when walking?
January 18th.  Yesterday The Doctor's scale, as well as mine, reflects a 4 lb weight loss in two weeks, hooray!   I told him I was back on track with my walking program.  I am getting a little tired of Lean Cuisine's however.   I've been eating plenty of fruits and vegetables too.

I'm really excited that I decided that winter or not, I was going to walk everyday, barring any nasty blizzards of freezing temps!  Welcome Georgia, the soup can idea sounds interesting.  I agree with the intermittent walking/jogging.  It definitely burns more calories.    Has everyone seen the latest Jenny Craig/Valerie Bertinelli commercial?   Valerie looks great! Wish she would share what kind of exercise program she is on..........surely she's a walker?!

Rachel
Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrr on a day like today spring seems so far away! 27 below zero last night, and only reached 5 above during the day.  No walking in this weather.  Blowing, drifting snow.........can't even open the door to the deck.  And my stomach is growling, I'm so hungry.  Gotta really count these calories while I can't get out and walk!

Rachel
It got to 10 below last night, and hoping it will reach the teens today.  Still too cold to walk for me.    I could just snuggle under a nice warm blanket and drink hot chocolate all day long in weather like this!

I went to bed hungry last night intentionally to see if it made a difference on the scale and it sure did.  Down another pound,  probably from my stomach growling all night.  My last meal had been sometime late afternoon yesterday. I had Fiber One Cerial this am, 14 grams of fiber in 1/2 cup, the most fiber you can find in cerial I think. And just 60 calories too.  They say that successful dieters eat a high fiber breakfast, so I'm giving it a try.

I think those darn lean cuisines cause the weight to come off slower actually.  So I'm going to be eating steamed vegggies and grilled/broiled fish for a few days each week and see how that works.  Can't wait til it warms up and the wind is calm so I can get back to my walking routine!

Rachel
Still too cold to walk, but I've really stuck to the healthy eating habits I have established.  I lost 6 pounds for the month of January.  I'd hoped to lose 8, which averages out to two pounds per week.  I've been keeping a diet journal and recording everything I eat. I've set a goal to lose 8 pounds by the last day of February.  Sure hope it warms up soon so I can get out and walk!

Rachel
Hi there!  It's finally warming up and the snow is melting, hooray!  It's been lovely walking weather.  I'm losing one lb a week is all, but I guess I'll settle for that.  Sure beats the alternative!

Rachel
Where have our walkers gone?!   I've been gone a while, but have continued on my healthy eating program.  I have lost exactly 14 pounds since the 1st of January when I made my resolution to get on track and stay on track. I have not had a single binge episode.

I have also been zig zagging calories and find that it works great.  I'm not going to get carried away with walking 7 - 10 miles a day this year, because I do not want to increase my appetite!  However I am committing myself to 5 miles a day, which is what the American Heart Association recommends.  I am still a few pounds from my goal weight, but will just keep plugging along!  Happy Spring, You All!  Keep on walking!  :)

Rachel

hi, i have just discovered this thread. walking really s something i like doing, and although i do plan to jog soon, i think i need to lose some more weight, so i walk. more than an hour every day, 3 to 4 hours daily on weekends (last 2 weeks only, but will go on - it was not planned, just turned out that way, and i really like it!)

I just found this thread, it looks like the community has died. That's unfortunate as so many people I know who are getting fitter are doing so by walking.

This past weekend, I walked 25 miles! In 10 hours. I started at 7:40am on Saturday and walked over 14 miles and packed it in around 12:45pm and then on Sunday I walked 11 miles starting at 8am and finishing up around 1:15pm.

Due to a pedometer tragedy (put it through the wash), I used mapmywalk.com to get my mileage.

I was walking out in the Iowa sunshine along a US highway, country roads and gravel roads.

On Saturday, I got a fanny pack that has 2 water bottles that go into slots on either side of the pouch. Tres useful if highly geeky looking. I used it on Sunday and loved it! The pouch is big enough for a bowl (for my walking partner), bags (for my walking partner) and my cellphone.

My walking partner is a mixed breed dog named Spikey. She's 5 and downright beautiful. When she needs a rest, she lies down. Since she's 80+ lb, and kind of floppy to try to carry, I stand there and wait until she's ready to proceed.

I have my eye on a gps unit that's designed to be used by outdoors people (it's handheld, small, and only shows a compass screen and topographic map, which should be sufficient for the kind of walking I like to do). Or maybe I should bit the bullet and actually learn to use a real compass and map!

I have a racerback tank with integrated shelf bra (actually I have 4 now) that I just love for walking in. I wear running shoes which seem to work well for this kind of walking too.

Anybody else go in for endurance walking, say 3+ hours at a time? I'm not really sure how to distinguish it from hiking except I'm not carrying a real pack.
