Walking Off the Weight 2

Quote  |  Reply
Hello all!

I credit my taking up walking, in conjuction with the awesome cc, with my weight loss success thus far this summer..... I know there are many others out there, walking away the pounds, the stress, the stuff in life that needs to be sweated out, so join us here! We had discussions in WOTW1 from where we liked to walk to how to improve the walking work out after it had gotten too easy, blisters and bras, to how to get the SO to come along with you, so if it's related to walking, it can go here! ( :

Just FYI, but I think I am offically a "wogger" now -- I almost can't say that word without laughing (credit Jess who found it). So let's say walkers, wanna be walkers who need encouragement, woggers, even joggers if they promise not to make fun! =P Hope to see allmy old friends here + and a lot of new ones too!

So---Rock on with your walkin', girls and boys!    --Olivia

Hey amaresmom, I live in Greenwich Village, a neighborhood people have actually head of! I walked through the west village today over to the Hudson River Park where everyone walks along the shore. I'm fortunate to have lots of organized walking trails even in the midst of 8 million people.
meg--- prayers and positive vibes, my new wogger buddy! lol  Embrace the wogger within you! (there are a million funny ways to use that one...)

welcome stagemanager too!

I skipped my walk today, hoping to get one in after dinner, but it was for a decent reason----we closed on our new house today! ( :

edit to add note to self: must walk extra hard and long tomorrow! (and all weekend!!!) ( ;
sparky - I am down to my last 5 pounds.  These last 5-10 have been the hardest to lose.   I have tried to switching my calories, my activities..... everything you can think of.   It has been very slow the last month or two and summer parties and such haven't helped a bit.   but I will eventually get there.  I am more healthy and fit now then I was this time last year!!!  congrats on the lose too!!!
Congrats to you Olivia!!!!!  very very good reason!!   we just bought a house ourselves last night - finally accepted our offer.  Thats the reason for no time to walk, too much going on.
Sloan - sorry I missed your post!!!   congrats on the loss!
Hey everyone i posted once on the 1st forum and have missed a few days so I had to catch up on this one, I have been walking everyday at least 20 minutes, the heat has been just awful, I have to walk at night, I just CAN NOT make myself get up in the mornings, I have tried just ain't happening:)  I have been walking around 7:30 to 8 everynight because of the heat and humidity, I think it got over a 100 today, I'm in the south, Eastern Arkansas.  I walked at the track last night and I think I actually prefer my yard because it's got slopes and it's just not level so I feel I'm getting a better workout.  Tonight I will walk with my husband's ex-wife, no I'm not losing my mind, we actually get along and I have a 13 year old stepson, he was 2 when Imarried his daddy so it's been such a great experience that we can get along, anyway I also have a little gilr that will be 8 on August 18, we are having a swimming party in this heat, it's actually been to hot to swim. We walked 45 minutesa last night but I didn't walk the pace I was used to since she was just starting out, but glad to see her doing it, I will always have to watch my weight, I have lost 50 pounds, I started in January 2005 and lost it all by May/June 2005 and have thankfully been able to keep it off, lately I could feel the pounds creaping back on so I'm trying to take control.

Congrats on all that are getting new houses, so exciting, I am a loan originator for mortgage loans, hope you got good rates!!!

Sorry for this being so long, about to go out for my walk think I will go a little early to get a few more faster paced laps in.
Hey everyone,

I went out and got my walkout on lastnight! I walked for my usual 30 min but remember seeing someone write " 30 min won't do much for weight lost" vcooper I think whoever it was motivated me to walk longer and faster thank you guys.

Also I got my grill pan last night from crate and barrel it the best think since sliced bread (wheat of course) LOL. It was only $30 to all of you who don't live in the city this is because I don't have a back yard and need to have grilled shrimp/salmon/chicken weekly!

Southfork, I also live in a very known area of Manhattan, Harlem which is very popular but not known for its walk trails:) but I am close to Central Park so I walk there once a week and use my local park the other 3 times.
Thanks for all the house congrats---it's been a long road it seems like, but really only a month or so.

I am sad that I will have to find new walking grounds as I love the peace, privacy, and sheer solitude my small town provides now, but I will find somewhere there too.....  Anyone one who knows the saga of Bandit the Wonder Dog may be interested in the fact that the puppy at the new house seems to be gone, so maybe I can convince the bf to let me have Bandit!   (I may be dreaming and/or on crack---we'll see.....)

I must have missed out on the 30 minutes won;t do you any good debate...... ?   Tanji (and other 30 minute walkers!) just my own 2 cents, but I think if you get out, get sweaty, get your heart pumping and your arms swining (with or without my beloved weights ( :  ) I think you ALREADY did yourself good!   Yes, maybe for extended fat burning and cardio benefits, maybe a little longer or a little faster does a little more, but I think go at your own pace, keep challenging yourself, and feel proud that you are doing something good for you!!!!  Like I said though, just MHO....   I've always shot for at least an hour or a certain distance, but I have all the time in the world in the summer and I can go in the AM when it is not as hot as the depths of hell yet, so my goals were tweaked by that.....  Once I have to go after work at 5PM vs. 7AM, I may very well only walk 30 minutes until it cools off! ( :

Never had a grill pan either----but LOVE grilling ( I ...can...... but I prefer to let the bf cook the caveman way! ( : ) Glad you like.... could you do...duh, I started to ask could you do pancakes on it, but that's a griddle pan, not grill. LOL  -- DUH

Just re-read most of the post since we started and realized a lot of of you have gotten to the same point I did....... Something clicked, and even if the scale didn't heed my bidding, I realize now that is just a number, it WILL move eventually if I do the right things, I enjoy eating healthy, I feel a million times better than I did before eating crap and being very lazy, and I love, love, love the way I feel after exercise!!!!!    I do not know when the change occured, but it is such a great one.

Hope you're all having a fab Friday--- I will be cleaning the new house and moving boxes today, so make it a good one!
Last night was must have been busy for everyone - wogging!!!!!  I to finally got outside last night, probably around 8:30 and walked the usual 2 miles with 3 pound weights, felt so good to be outside, I walked another mile..... yeah!!!  felt so good!!  what was so funny it only took me 10 more minutes than usual.  I was busting my butt!!!

Have a great Friday everyone!
Have fun in your new house, Olivia.

vcooper -- Congrats on the extra mile and the great time in adding it!

Of course, 30 minutes of exercise is worth it! No, it won't burn as many calories as 60 minutes, but it sures burns more than 30 minutes of watching TV! Do what you can, do what feels good to you, carry weights or don't, do in the morning or the evening or in the middle of the day -- do it consistantly and voila! you're someone who works out! That is AMAZING!!!

TGIF!

I love that I've stretched my 30 mins to 45 mins...in just one week's time! Missed the walk I'd planned last evening because of rain, but got out there this AM. Next week's goal is to pump it up a bit...get a little sweaty (by effort, not the humidity!) Still like mornings best because it sets me into a positive mood for the day!

True, any minutes spent in physical activity count for something. Without it, our bodies would go into starvation mode and no matter how many caloires we cut, we wouldn't lose! Gotta keep that metabolism pumping, and the heart too!

hey amaresmom, it's raining again here. when you first asked me what neighborhood i lived in, i hadn't realized at the time you were a fellow NYer and so i must have sounded like a complete idiot.  i've got friends in your neighborhood and we've walked the northern part of Central Park. it's so beautiful in that part of the park. sometimes i'll take the A or C train and then walk. I'm glad we have subways to take us home (when they're not flooded!)

Hey all, I walked after dinner last night over to a frozen yogurt place called Pinkberry (there's one at Columbia U also, amaresmom) and ordered a small 5 oz. serving with strawberries. Then I walked home. I calculated that I could actually walk off the calories I ate.
south and mom - I was totally surprised by Central Park when we were there a couple of years ago in December.  I was not expecting it to be so nice, we took a carriage ride - which was so romantic to me (I know sap)!!!

Kris - totally agree with you, any exercise is good even if you can only fit in 15 minutes, better than nothing  : - 0
I love it that some New Yorkers hooked up here ( :

Thanks to all for the house congrats--- I'm thrilled but exhausted, taking a break from my 3 hours so far of box moving and cleaning.

Good job to all of you who are pushing yourselves---whether it's harder, faster, further, whatever----I'm proud of you!

I extend my weekend challenge to you all----I will be hard pressed to make myself get up Saturday and Sunday and get my wog on before the mass moving begins, but I PROMISE I will.

Meg!! --- you did not tell us how your first day back went walking, does that mean I shouldn;t ask?  / : Sorry if so, I was just really hoping you'd be happy!

Hey V? Did you start with 3lb weights or work up to it?  (edited to add---that does not make you a sap! I would LOVE to take a carriage ride with my honey bun!

Well, enough of an AC break, I guess. Hope to hear all about your adventures soon enough. Walk on!
Olivia - I worked up to it, started the wog with just moving my arms, then added alittle weight each week and now at 3 pounds, can't remember who, but someone said 5 pounds - not sure I could pull that off wogging.  I have no arm strength at all and week wrists to boot.   Have fun moving, I will be there at the end of Sept, we go to sign loan papers today.

Have a good one!!!
hey everyone,

Like southfork told you guys its raining here in NYC again! So there goes my walk, I can use my bike at home and watch reruns of Big Love though which also gives me great pleasure :). Yes southfork I am a fellow NYer I will check out pinkberry I love it up there on broadway. I see from your blog you guys are serious walkers and I am just beginning so I won't beg to join you yet.

Meg are you going out later, or did you already run how'd it go?

Vcooper OMG (oh my god like the kids say) I think that is soo romantic I am the queen of sapp. I almost cried looking at your daughters wedding pictures just beautiful and she was a beautiful bride. Also congrats go out to you on finding your soul mate I say soulmate because any man who is willing to go on a diet with you must be god sent.lol

olivia congrats on the house and remember to count all of that hard work in your daily activity.

Kris thanks for the encouragement to do a little something today I think I over did it last night even after the extra streches my legs are killing me.
Mom - you must be getting the rain we got here yesterday in Cleveland, we had some nasty weather in the evening.  But today is beautiful out.  thanks for the compliments on my daughter, she is my only one - so I am very proud of her.   My  hubby is truly amazing.   Never thought I would get remarried, but along he came out of the blue. When I said I was changing the way I eat he joined right in and said I will too.  Nice having someone do it with you, alot more support.  We unfortunately cannot work out together, he is alittle more intense than I am in some regards but others its me.  So we agreed to do this alone, but push each other.

Sorry to hear your are sore today, take it easy.... don't push yourself to hard, you will get there eventually.
Everyone is so inspiring, it's still hot here and I probably won't be able to walk tonight going to stay at a friends house while our husbands go to the lake, just a girls night, I was able to walk/run for 1 hour last night, I was so proud of myself and I felt great, if I could just make myself do this everynight!!!  I'm hoping to get sometyoe of exercise equipment for when it turns cold, because I'm not sure that I can make myself walk in the cold so if anyone has any good suggestions on a piece of equipment please let me know.

Have to get back to work, everyone keep trucking!!!!

Have a great weekend.

olivia you are getting the doulbe workout with movnig boxes!!!
I sure feel like I got a work out, but it is so cool to be moving into OUR house and not someone else's!!!

V-- I am still amazed! If I am going to try and wog almost completely with no walking, I do not bring the weights at all. I can barely jog without hurting myself in the first place, let alone with 3 lb weights. Between the girls, the mp3 player, and trying not to crash and burn, the weights would be....scary. I think I could walk with 3lbs, but not jog. GOSH

hey rogers....? I don;t know if you mean a big machine (stationary bike, etc) or just inside activities you can do vs. walk outside once it's cold, but here are some ideas I've been contemplating lately.... Do you have any used sports equipment stores near you? I think ours are called Play It Again, but there are others. I'm sure. Things are pretty cheap there... Try ebay or craigslist.com---I heard, (err, saw) someone talkign about how they got a new elliptical off craigslist for $40 here the other day!  Honestly, I was SUPER HAPPY when I first got my fitness ball. You can do all kinds of stuff on it. I even do cardio----I "box" with 8 lb weights while bouncing on the ball. ( :  I know lots of people do work out dvds etc, and I even found some free work out videos on line I;ve been using when it's raining, etc... Just my 2 cents.

How about it, girls and boys?   What are your plans for how to keep up your hard work once it gets cold????

(I will probably still walk and wog outside unless it is actually dangerous to do so. I MUCH, much, much prefer working out outdoors!)
We have an eliptical at home I use when the weather is crappy (freeze baby) or my body hurts.  I like it, low impact on the feet and knees.  We have a TV in the room, so watch and workout.  I also have the stability ball which is great for abs, resistance bands and weights.  I like Slim in 6 and turbo jam DVD's, prevention.com has some DVD's.   My hubby ordered me a bunch from Netflix - this way I can try them before I buy or he burns them for me.

Olivia - hear you on the wogging with the 3 lbs, at first it was OH CRAP, but it is getting so much better.  Still don't think I will go 5 lbs though.  that just seems to much weight to carry.
