walking suggestions

Quote  |  Reply

I finally went to a dr. since my knees continually hurt, and he said I have like patellar tendinitis so really i just need to rest it. But there is no way in hell I can do that. I need to do something.

So I used to be 120, and now I'm scaling up to 135 and I would really like to get back to 120. I have three months before I see my family again and I'd liek to drop 12-15.

I was wondering what I can/should do to reach my goal.

My eating on the weekends has to be corrected, but Im trying. Yesterday was good. Today was fine, until I started working on my paper and just went through a lot peanut butter, btu I'll just correct it tonight by eating a small salad.

If your doctor has advised you to rest the knee then for goodness' sake do so or all that will happen is that the pain will carry on for months instead of weeks.  There are things you can do to stay active that are not stressful on the knee...

And if you can't exercise then you have to really watch your food intake... make intelligent choices.  15lbs in 3 months could be quite a stretching target for someone that is only 130-ish lbs to start with but if your diet is better quality rather than simply lower in calories you could make a difference to your shape.

yeah 15 is a stretch. Im not trying to kill myself, but its something Im hoping for. If it takes a month longer, well then it takes a month longer.

I'm doing my best to make good food choices. That's going to be the key factor I agree, but I do also try to get out walking even if its not intense and take the stairs when I can.

I'm just trying to get some ideas, but not over do it. I want my knee to heal!!!

I feel ya for your injury....I had a pulled thigh muscle...and I was foolish enough to still try to get a couple of miles walking in....I only prolonged my injury.

Best advise I can give is to rest, and may be do some weight lifting?  At least you'd be working out some.

I hope your knee heals soon!

I have suffered from that in both knees.  At least that was the first diagnosis I got when I tried running and after a few days found out I could barely walk.  An MRI showed up nothing for me; so the next diagnosis was some sort of arthritis in both knees.  My health wellness doctor thinks the first diagnosis was correct.  The pain did go away.

I am only relating the following because it worked for me:  I found out I could ride my stationary bike after a couple of days, but still had pain when walking.  The pain will go away. Over the last 10 years 3 times a few days of running seemed to cause the pain for me to occur.  If you knees hurt walking up stairs, probably the bike riding would be out.  I would advise against continued walking if the pain persists because that will slow down recovery.

Do you have access to a kick-boxing or heavy bag where you can pound away and get some cardio in?  Best of luck on a quick recovery!

Yeah, I just got new walking shoes too :(

But there is a one bag. I'll give that a go. and I'll hop on the bike just to see how it feels.

But I guess I really need to focus on recovery and food intake

Just take it easy. Walk on flat ground. Have you thought about swimming? It's so low-impact and you work every muscle in your body, too.

if you can't walk swim it burns tons of calories and puts less strain on the joints

Great idea about the swimming.

When I said kick-box bag, I meant for hitting not for the kicking.  LOL

Best of luck again for fast and complete recovery.

I'd love to swim. That would be the best idea, but no pool around me.

I'm going to punch the bag. get my anger out about my knees!

But what about the rowing machine?

get a speed bag not a punching bag, punching (properly) requires use of arms, legs and importantly the torso. Speed bag is just the arms and is fast pace you can really work up a storm that way.
