Do you mean actual running like outside or on a treadmil?

Either way, running always burns more calories, even than speed-walking, because you are doing more work by lifting your legs totally off the ground and back down again, in a way that doesn't happen when walking. So even if you are going the same speed, the movements of running burn more calories than walking. That's why its harder and hurts more!

I have read many books on this, and they all say that the calories are the same.  The difference is the time.  It will take less time to run, so you would burn the calories faster.  Check this out:

My roommate's brother is really into his body and has done extensive research on what he should eat and what kind of excercise he should do. He told me that to burn fat, I need to either walk or sprint but don't jog. Even though jogging might burn more calories than walking, jogging works your muscles while walking and sprinting draws energy from your fat or glucose storage... I can't remember. But does anyone know about this or is he misinformed. I've never seen a fat sprinter but I've seen fat joggers....
I've heard that if you elevate your heart rate too far, you're burning carbs or muscle instead of fat. The explanation for this was that burning fat requires oxygen to the cells, and if you're working too hard, there is not enough time for the oxygen to get to your fat cells, so your body gives up and burns something else instead.

So if this is true then it just depends how fit you are. If walking is sufficient to elevate your heart rate to the lower end of your target zone, that would burn more fat than running and taking it too high. But if walking doesn't get your heart rate up enough, then you should run instead. If you're more interested in building muscle than burning fat, I think running would be better regardless of your fitness level.

Again, this is just what I've read, I haven't been working out long enough to say for myself!!

Hm. I jog about 3 times a week but have been waking up sore lately. I also have a puppy who I walk and jog. I'm sure it's extra weight and walking wouldn't give me the same tension, but I can walk all day without braking a sweat.  I don't feel like it's excercise. I only jog about a half an hour, but am losing my motivation for working out because of the soreness.  It may become a vicious cirlce because I don't want to work out because I'm too heavy for my joints, and I'm too heavy 'cause I don't want to work out!

Anyone else deal with this?
foxylady, I find that my joints hurt too much if I run. Do you have access to a treadmill? If you do, maybe you can walk fast on it; that's what I do, and after 15 minutes I really start sweating. Sometimes I add incline to see how it's going with my knees. Just don't add too much too soon. OR Maybe you could try walking much faster outside, if you don't have a treadmill (kind of like you were afraid of missing the bus!)
foxylady, are you warming up and cooling down and stretching properly? Sometimes after I run I feel to lazy and just want to lie down but its really important that you stretch or else you lose some of the effectiveness of your workout. Also stretching helps prevent the soreness. Or mabye you're sore because running is still new to your body and after you run more often you won't experience as much soreness. Also, are you running on sidewalk? My knees and shins always hurt if I run on sidewalk. The best is dirt trails but if you don't have access to that, try running on the asphalt.
