I want to add more fiber

Quote  |  Reply

I just realized that cc has the ability to tell me how much I average for the month for certain things like sodium/sugar/sat fat/fiber. I think my fiber numbers are too low (15g) so how can I add more naturally?

Thanks cc

Natural Sources of Fiber:

- Flaxseeds

- Hempseeds

- Artichokes

- Spinach

- Legumes (Lentils)

- Asparagus

- Broccoli

- Wheat Germ

- Rice Bran

- Pears

- Pistachios

- Berries

- Pumpkin & Other Squash

- Cabbage and Lettuces

- Green Beans & Leeks & Onions & Garlic

Thanks for this list...if you come up with some more let me know :-) I am going to go shopping this weekend with this in mind...more fiber!

All fruits & vegetables are fiber-packed. So is any whole grain: oats, rice, wheat, etc. Beans and bran cereal are excellent sources.

Just be aware that if you increase your fiber dramatically, you might have digestive problems. Drink lots of water and gradually up your intake.

Try this link to a post I made several days ago regarding calories vs fiber and protein:  http://caloriecount.about.com/fiber-protein-r ich-foods-calorie-cost-ft144979

Thanks!

these are great posts, i will copy and past to my shopping list! :-)

Well there is 10 grams of fiber in one cup of kashi go lean cereal. (but not the crunch)

Apples and other fruits have some fiber.

Whole grain bread has fiber. The whole grain english muffins by Thomas are good. Every store has some good whole grain bread, you just have to look.

about how many grams should I be at each day? right now it says I average 15g.

You need at least 25 grams each day.  Be sure to drink plenty of water while upping your fiber intake, to ease any GI discomfort you might experience.

I'm also a regular of Fiber One cereal (the kind that looks like rabbit food).  It has I think 14 grams of fiber for 60 calories.

Anything whole grain will have fiber. If you go to a bread store, or a grocery with a large selection of bread, you should be able to go through and find the bread with the most fiber.

Also, metamucil has lots of fiber. You can buy it in the capsul form now too, instead of just the powder. It can be a good way to get extra fiber.

The capsules I found only have .5 grams fiber per 2 capsules, so they really aren't worth it.  Metamucil powder has 3 grams fiber per Tablespoon dose.

And you have to watch the whole grains.  Often, there is only a miniscule amount of whole grains in a product.  What you want to look for is 100% Whole Grain in the label.

If you add just 1/2 cup fiber one (original) cereal to your 15 gm of fiber, you're good to go.  High-fiber foods are great because they really fill you up.  Try eating lots of fruits, vegetables, whole wheat pasta or bread, oatmeal, bran cereal, brown rice, fiber cereal or bars, beans, and enhanced cereals.  But as you increase your fiber intake, be sure to drink plenty of fluids to avoid digestive issues.

Mission Tortillas Plus! Carb Balance Whole Wheat Fajita Size -- 1 of these tortillas is 80 calories with 2g of fat, 3g of protein, and a whopping 8 grams of fiber!!!! They are delicious especially when folded in half and heated on a skillet.

A delicious way to add fiber is to have a Fiber One bar every day.  (It also helps to satisfy my chocolate craving, since it has dark chocolate chips in it.) And Cascadian Farm has a delicious high-fiber bar called Fiber Right.  Both are listed here on CC.  And I've begun having a slice of Milton's Original Multi-Grain Bread with 1T of almond butter on it every day.  Delicious!!!  I have a bunch of fruit every day and I've managed to get my total fiber up to 23-28 g. per day!  NOT an easy task, I can tell you.  But I've slowly added in the fiber-rich foods over a two-month period of time...about one new addition per week.
