Glucomannan!

That stuff has seriously cut my calorie intake in half.

It's basically a super-absorbent fiber.

It's what has worked for me.

Just a little tip.

thanks! where can i get it?

I LOVE GLUCOMANNAN!

AHHH Smile

I had ate "ramen" last night.. filled me up so much

I have never heard of this. It sounds good, but is it safe?

Clinical evidence suggests glucomannan may be beneficial in weight loss.[4] Because it is a soluble fiber, it absorbs water to form a viscous gel-like mass. This mass may promote feelings of satiety while traveling through the gastrointestinal tract. In obese patients, taking 1 gram of glucomannan with 8 ounces (250 ml) of water 1 hour before each of 3 meals daily over 8 weeks resulted in an average weight loss of 5.5 pounds

Is it a pill you take?

Hmm sounds interesting  i have never heard ot it...

Sounds interesting..  I found some info to share.

Glucomannan (GM) is a soluble, fermentable, and highly viscous dietary fiber derived from the root of the elephant yam or konjac plant, which is native to Asia. Preliminary evidence suggests that GM may promote weight loss. This review summarizes studies using GM for weight loss as well as studies investigating its mechanisms of action. At doses of 2-4 g per day, GM was well-tolerated and resulted in significant weight loss in overweight and obese individuals. There is some evidence that GM exerts its beneficial effects by promoting satiety and fecal energy loss. Additionally, GM has been shown to improve lipid and lipoprotein parameters and glycemic status. Further investigation of safety, efficacy, and mechanisms of action is needed to determine whether GM can help to decrease the high prevalence of overweight and obesity in the United States.  PMID: 16320857 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE]

Glucomannan is a dietary fiber employed quite frequently in the western countries since two decades now, as its ingestion plays an important role in human health. However, eastern people have used this fiber for more than a thousand years. This dietary fiber is the main polysaccharide obtain from the tubers of the Amorphophallus konjac plant, a member of the family Araceae found in east Asia. The chemical structure of glucomannan consists, mainly, in mannose and glucose in the ratio 8:5 linked by beta (1-->4) glycosidic bonds. This soluble fiber has a extraordinarily high waterholding capacity, forming highly viscous solutions when dissolved in water. It has the highest molecular weight and viscosity of any known dietary fiber. It has been demonstrated that this product is highly effective in the treatment of obesity due to the satiety sensation that it produces; as a remedy for constipation, because it increases the faeces volume; as hypocholesterolemic agent, interfering in the transport of cholesterol and of bile acids and as hypoglycemic and hypoinsulinemic agent, probably, by delaying gastric emptying and slowering glucose delivery to the intestinal mucosa. To the beneficial properties of this fiber, several disadvantages can be added as the production of flatulence, abdominal pain, esophageal obstruction, lower gastrointestinal obstruction or even the possible modification of the bioavailability of other drugs.  PMID: 14983741 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE]

I love you, samalamadingdong.  I am so glad you recommended this.

I have been starving on 2400 high-fiber, high-protein calories a day (I'm very tall and fairly active) and have been looking for a way to tame the hungries without going nuts on calories.  I picked some glucomannan up at lunch today and took a half dose with my afternoon snack - and those carrot sticks lasted me 4 hours... which is about 3 hours and 50 minutes longer than carrots would normally last.  I look forward to not feeling hungry all day long tomorrow =)

Where did u get this from?  Is it a pill or powder form?

~H~

You can get it on ebay http://search.ebay.ca/search/search.dll?from= R40&_trksid=m37&satitle=Glucomannan+& amp;category0= ...(and probably other places as well, but it just happens to be the most accessible right now)

I saw this thread last night, and I've been wondering about it ever since. I wonder if it's possible to get addicted to this stuff. I mean, people who take laxatives eventually have trouble going on their own, and if I don't drink my coffee in the morning, I feel lousy all day. Would it possibly be a better idea to just not get involved with it? I've just never heard of it before, it's interesting...

Edited to add: apparently it is also one of the main ingredients in shirataki noodles

ok wait a minute what the heck is "fecal energy loss" Surprised, interesting way of describing it.

anyway sounds good & if its only fiber its not the same as stool softeners/surfactants which after prolonged use will become ineffective.

My appetite and hunger are not one in the same. I can be stuffed with a huge appetite still kicked into high gear.

I really wish feeling 'full' helped.

Sounds interesting, but I'd def look into this product closely and talk to your doctor about any complications it could cause you.

High fiber diets are a plus, but too much fiber could be a bad thing :)

it's a capsule full of ground up konjac root. it absorbs the water that you drink with it and makes you feel fuller and also slows down the digestion process which makes you feel fuller too.

it would be nice if being full was the same as not having an appetite, but it does help enough to be worth the purchase. i get a bottle of 360 pills every 2 moths for $20 from vitacost.com.

Hmmmm, I'm feeling tempted!  I can't even remember the last time I felt full!!!  I'm under the assumption that I don't have the hormone leptin.  I can eat and eat and eat and NEVER just stop because I'm full...I just keep on going until the food runs out!

Can you buy this say at a supplement store or in the vitamin section of ur pharmacy???

You can also buy it in some asian markets under the name "shirataki noodles" or "miracle noodles."

I just bought some for $10 at nutrition house (health food store).

Can't wait to try it!

Why does this sound too good to be true?...

Oh wait....Wink

... or konyakku! There are those that are calorie free, and then some that are about 30 cals per portion. Those with cals are, (of course!!) a bit tastier, but they're both alright. I put them in a Tom Yam Goong soup that also is low in calories. For lunch I'll put some shrimp in there... I'll be totally full for hours at something between 0 and 150 cals! I love this stuff!
