I just want to share...
I just wanted to share with you all how much lunch went today. I hate that it seems that we (Americans) seem to want fatting foods more than the more sensible and enjoyable ones. The fact that I have been waiting for five days for some fresh fruit instead of precut fruit that is saturated in corn syrup is enough to make me scream. I have submitted a complain form about this about two days ago, I am sure they are just having supply issues, but it is the fact that they should have the healthier food in a more abundant supply then the hotdogs, nacho cheese, hamburgers, chicken wings, chicken nuggets, steak, the list goes on!!!
Anyway here is my post on my blog.

Lunch and the culture of fatness. Mon, 08/20/2007 - 12:34
Before I entered the DFAC I was ready to eat my sandwich and salad, but after walking around a bit and standing in six lines I started to get kind of angry that they (the DFAC) still had no fresh fruit and no chicken, turkey, or tuna. Oh but they did have yummy steak, French fries, fried chicken, burritos, egg rolls, hamburgers, and just about every other fatting food under the sun. Okay, I am done with the rant.
20 Aug 07, Lunch (1140):
Mood (Before):
Happy and starving!
Meal:
Fish, Baked: 181
Pineapple: 125
Asparagus: 40
Macaroni Salad: 310
Sub-Total: 656 calories
Total: 1107 calories
Left till goal: 794 calories
Mood (After):
Angry, that I didn?t get my sandwich and because of it I had to eschew my salad for some extra fat and crabs from some where else, though I know I am full I don?t feel like it. I really did want to eat the various fatting foods they had lined up quite neatly.

I Sympathize with the DFAC thing. When i was in the army I was on ft bliss bigga army airfield and nothing was set up. Our DFAC was those big tents. I wasn't even looking for fresh fruit really if I had gotten something that wasnt deep fried or a hamurger (and sometimes I think they deep fry those) I would have been happy. Keep on doing what your oing though. They have to get fresh fruit in at some point in time. Lets face it they dont want you to get scurvy becuase then you are of no use to them.
I find it interesting that I'm struggling to make weight before I ship out to basic training in September, and there have been reports that its been difficult for the armed forces to find recruits because so many young people these days are overweight, yet I read things like this and see that they are just perpetuating the problem.
Jess,
This is not a new thing -- back in the dark ages (1981) when I joined up, I spent 3 months riding my bike 50 miles a day and eating not much more than yogurt and wheatgerm, JUST so I would be under my max the day I reported to the MEPPS station before basic -- I made my weight. Twenty-four hours later, by the time I got to TX, I was already over my max. And I spent the next 26 years fighting the USAF weight standards. When they went to measured body fat, I did much better -- I was always in shape (well, up to the last few years), just heavy (I really am large-framed). I spent so much time (my fault) yo-yo ing up and down before every weigh in that I think I permanently screwed my body up -- oh, if I had only focused on eating correctly
The services are "trying" to focus less on weight and more on fitness -- but only up to a point.

Out of all that, the steak seems like the healthiest choice...it's not nearly as bad as any of the other options...now, if you can get some grilled veggies with it you'll be in good shape. Even nasty canned veggies wouldn't be too high in calories and would have a reasonable nutrition value.
