Why do you Want to be Skinny?

Quote  |  Reply

there are people on this site who want to be thin or super skinny even when they're already in shape or "normal" in the teen community.

why?

can you feel excess fat in unwanted places?

would you feel more attractive/confidant if you were thinner?  if so, then you're just losing fat to be more appealing to others?

nooo... because this is a health website, not pro-ana, hun. :)

woahhh. hostile, much? calm down, chick. didnt you see the smiley face after what i said?

pro-ana refers to websites that encorage people to live their lives with their EDs. pro-ana=pro anorexia.

this site can hurt her, yes, but it can also help her. the health &support forum along with the weight gain forums are helpful places for motivation.

I want to be thinner for myself. My confidence has been going down hill for quite some time now, and although, no i'm not fat, i do have parts of me that make me feel uncomfortable. This might be an unhealthy view, i am eating more healthy, doing more regular exercise, and i'm probably the most healthy person i know.

I don't eat junk foods, i only drink water, and so what if i want to be skinny! I'm doing it the right way. That's why it's annoying when people turn around and say i'm pro-anorexic or what ever, i don't want to be anorexic, i want to be towards the bottom of my bmi healthy weight range.

Atm i'm 5ft3, 123lb, and my BMI's 21.8.

I want to be more 5ft3 108lb and then my bmi would be 19.1, still in my healthy weight range.

Again, if you have any questions, comments, or concerns please pm me.

What is that you feel is condescending???

UTR, me &gabby talked it out. it's all okay. =)

I think that everyone has a weight or range of weights at which they feel most comfortable and desirable.  As long as those weights are within the BMI standards of a healthy weight, no one is going to object.  If your goal is to be underweight, this site is not the place to do it.

Personally, I do not EVER want to be skinny.  Slender, svelte, in shape, I can go for any of those, but in my mind skinny has some unhealthy connotations for me that I don't want. Other people will have different associations with the word, but for me it conjures an underweight bony person or someone who looks more like a boy than a woman.

I want to get into the healthy BMI weight range (so very close for me).  One reason is health.  Another reason is that I don't really find the extra jiggle that I have in a few places to be all that attractive.

I don't want to be 'skinny'. I am working on losing from some problem areas. I started CC at 164lb and I'm 5'9, I'm now around 147-148.

I would like my belly to not go over my pants. I had one pair with snaps instead of buttons, as I gained weight they would pop open when I sat down or bent over. Pants were also getting tight on my legs and butt, and I don't like that bursting stuffed sausage look. My bf's sister gave me a pair of jeans, they fit perfect (the only pants that didn't make my belly spill over)...but they were pants she wore while losing pregnancy weight.

Non-stretching shirt sleeves being too tight. Button up shirts looking like they were bursting at my bust, sometimes a button would pop open!

Tired of the double chin I would get if I looked down (still have it -_-).

I want to look fit...something like her would be nice.

Lastly I've just never been in good shape, I would like to experience it, while I'm in my prime...

I know what you mean! I've never been skinny and i just want to see what it feels like.

personally i think the way the media portrays all these super skinny girls and how you watch your boyfriend or friends sit and stare in awe of how beautiful or 'fit' that person is.....it makes you insecure. Its like a natural thing that girls do to, if you see a guy with no shirt on with a nice tanned muscular body generally girls pull a not so attractive face and just drool over him! Guy do the same when they see girls but they never really do it over an overweight girl! Infact my friend the other day turned to my boyfriend and pointed out a girl with the EXACT same body shape as myself and went omg she is so fat! and my boyfriend more or less agreed (which i will not let him forget about!). Between the media and the people around you girls get insecure about how they look and so do boys! I want to be slimmer for myself but also for the way people look at me which is sad but its just the way things are now a days. I genuinly think my boyfriend will find me more attractive if i was slimmer and im not even big now! Its madness! I dont think they realise how carefully we listen to what they say and how much to heart we take it. You gotta be more careful with your words!

for me it's not about the media at all.. i just tend to find super skinny attractive.

well, it actually depends on your "style".

the more preppy girls, i think, can pull off being a little more full-bodied, rather than stick thin. the girls with more "alternative" styles tend to look better thin. since i'm one of those girls, there's a lot more pressure to be hella skinny.

but i don't mind the pressure because i think it looks great.

I'm new to this site, and by no means do I feel like I am horribly overweight. But like many people there are troublesome areas that I want to work on through a healthy diet and excercise. I'm 5'2 and 130 lbs. I want to be healthy, and thats it.

To answer your question, no, I don't think I would be more confident if I was thinner. I don't use how I look on the outside to measure my confidence. I know myself as a person and thats where it comes from.

It depends on what is being termed alternative. In the Goth scene, for example, there is an emphatic tolerance/acceptance of full-bodied and curvaceous figures, including the larger than; regardless of who the designers end up employing to portray new creations, or who the magazines select to publish on their covers.  In fact, one could say that the Goth scene's embrace of voluptuous figures is rooted in spite of mainstream culture's portrayal of the pencil thin as the 'ideal' type.
Oh, and by Goth scene, I don't mean the mallcore brats runnin' around these days. Tongue out

As for whether or not I would feel more attractive or confident after losing what I've to lose; I doubt I'd feel any more confident. But attractive, for sure. However, I disagree as to the assertion that I'm only doing this for others. In reality, I'm a vain creature, and I like myself and my body--I'd just like my body to look better; more along the lines of what I consider aesthetically pleasing. My desire to lose weight is utterly selfish; if I happen to turn a few heads after I'm at my GW and maintaining, then great but, it doesn't really concern me if others notice, so long as I notice. I want to be able to see myself lookin' toned and healthy again inside a pair of form-fittin' black jeans and boots. I don't want to buy and wear clothing to hide my moobs, flabby stomach and bulging thighs any longer. And I know through proper nutrition and exercise, I will get there eventually. The process will only help the end result be all that much more satisfying. Oh dear, I think I've veered off subject. Sealed

Edit: Added response to opening post.

Hmmm, in every Goth club I've been to it's always been the skinny ones that get the boys.

its not a trap. its what i think. how is wanting to be happier with myself a trap?

My point is that simply being super skinny doesn't change who you are, and chances are it won't really make you happy. You might find yourself feeling even worse.

Based on what you have in your profile, you already ARE skinny. Your goal is unrealistic, and consistent with someone who has an eating disorder. In fact, you even admit you have one.

that's true. I am not even super skinny and I know I am still the same person on the inside, but yet I am still trying to lose weight. Weird how my brain is tricking me into the same kind of thinking I had 20 pounds ago. hmm...

rampant:

Really? I know a couple of voluptuous vamps that spot their prey at the main Goth/Industrial club in DFW and, they are seemingly rather successful. Meh, regardless then, from my experience it would appear that, at least in theory, the scene is generally accepting of a wide range of body types. I think I ought to go visit the nightclubs elsewhere! Roadtrip this summer, perhaps? Wink
