i want to start eating alot healthier, can you guys help?
are these healthy, or should i cut them out or substitute them?
- orville redenbacher smartpop.
- canned tuna.
- subway sandwiches (turkey or roast beef on whole wheat, no cheese, no sauce).
- vanilla soymilk.
- weight watcher's bread.
- cottage cheese.
- all-bran bran flakes.
- sugar-free hot chocolate.
- cheese.
- white potato.
- cream cheese.
- deli meats.
Okay for the most part its fine, but try to mix up the food every once and awhile or you'll get bored and binge
make sure the tuna is in oil, and if you like soymilk try unsweetened almond breeze ( 40 cals a cup!)
sf hot chocolate: personally knowing that its sugar-free makes me drink more, maybe buy fat-free and save it for a treat.
deli-meats are okay, but i know you're not supposed to have them on a daily basis, maybe have some every other day and then switch it up with pb& banana?
hope i helped some
why would you want tuna in oil?

i was thinking the same thing. i doubt the oil used would be a heart-healthy oil, plus wouldn't it add alot of fat and calories?
i'm having a suck-mood day kinda, so i'm just doubting everything i eat.. can anyone else help? please.
If those are all of the foods that you ever eat, then you need some veggies, love.
Otherwise, none of those foods are awful and should be cut out of your diet, because no food is awful and should be cut out of your diet. You just need to pay attention to how much and how often. Someone will tell you not to eat cheese or white potatoes, but they are boring, and someone will tell you not to eat the artificial sweeteners in sf hot chocolate, but they are uptight. Ease up on yourself. You're doing fine.
Hugs! -cordie

lol, i eat other things!
other things i eat regularily (i'm pretty sure they're healthy though, so i didn't post them) are: oats, brussel sprouts, squash, broccoli, cauliflower, asparagus, spinach, chicken breasts, salmon, sweet potato, tomatoes, tuna steaks, shark steaks, lean beef, turkey, apples, frozen mango, bananas, raspberries, yogurt, whole eggs (1-3 a week), egg whites, hummus and other things i can't think of x)
i freggin love cream cheese- its not healthy, but I cant live without it so i just use it. id sayif you an, use sparingly
cheese- this should not be eaten in mass quantities because of the chlorestoral.
subway sandwiches- thats fine!!
sugar free- i love sg anything...but it does have artificial sweetner, which isnt healthy they say
white potato- very starchy, but loaded with potassium. eat this in conjunction with veggies as a side for dinner ...or a snack (with some sour cream and a little cheese and scallions..mmmm).
canned tuna- i think it is loaded with chlorestoral but anyone please correct me if i am wrong
popcorn, soy milk, cereal = all good!
moderation is key!

OK good, just checking :)
Do you buy frozen mango or do you buy it in season and freeze it yourself? It's probably too late to do the self-freezing this year, but some yummy mango in my oatmeal or smoothies might be an awesome anti-winter snack... thanks for the inspiration

I think the high sodium in regular canned tuna is more of an issue, but they have low sodium brands out there.
Eerica,
My basic rule of thumb is this: The less done to it, the better it is for you. Anything that comes in a box or carton is going to be a less healthy choice than the real deal, but it's easy to choose them for convenience and cost sometimes. It's also really easy to eat a lot of garbage and watch your calories at the same time, so make sure that you are eating balanced meals with enough fat, fiber, protein to satisfy your hunger better and longer. Air popped popcorn and rice cakes and things like that make it easy to snack within your calorie budget, but won't fill you up nearly as long as "powersnacks" like raw almonds, fibrous fruits and veggies, light cheeses (laughing cow and celery..so good!), and lean meats. Feel free to pm me anytime for recipes and snack ideas.
Good luck and grats on taking steps in the healthy direction :)

i buy it already frozen into chunks because everytime i buy a fresh mango, i can never get it pitted, peeled and cut without making a huge mess and without getting really frustrated.
we like a lot of the same things! most of the stuff, i'd say, is healthy. maybe you could switch to whipped cream cheese, which i personally like the texture of better anyways. nestle makes hot chocolate called "rich hot chocolate" or "mini marshmallows" that's only 80 calories that i drink, but it's not sugar free if that's something that you really want, and i'm not sure if it's available in canada. just a few tips :)
be careful of the mercury in tuna. tuna is a very large fish (like the size of a whale), which means the meat accumulates a lot more mercury than pretty much any other fish. eat smaller fish if you can. shrimp would be even better, except i don't think anyone sells canned shrimp.
also, high sodium in the deli meats and the cottage cheese. but if you drink a lot of water, i don't think it should be a problem.
and the cream cheese and cheese-- you know the deal.
The canned tuna, all bran & some deli meats that do not have added ingredients in them are healthy but the other stuff is not too healthy, I am sorry to say...
Popcorn = Try making "Kale Chips" or "Eggplant Chips" - bake these vegetables with a liberal amount of seasoning until crispy
Canned Tuna = good but you should mix it up every so often with canned salmon, mackerel or sardines (they may sound gross, but they are GOOD I promise!)
Subway Sandwiches = While the bread MAY be whole wheat, it really lacks in the FIBER department so I would try to stick to making your own sandwiches! Have you ever heard of Ezekiel Bread? It is full of fiber and no extra fillers that are unhealthy - turkey is a good sliced meat to eat because it is low fat, high in protein & low in calories!
Vanilla Soymilk = sugar high in sugar and I have read a lot about how SOY is not good for the body, but I know some people either NEED to drink soy or reg. milk, so I will let you decide on that one.
Weight Watcher's Bread = once again I am going to recommend Ezekiel bread
Cottage Cheese = I am really not an advocate on dairy
All bran Flakes = High in fiber, although I do believe there is high fructose corn syrup in these - Ezekiel Bread does have a cereal line that you should look into as well... Check out the website FoodForLife.com
Sugar-Free Hot Chocolate = eh, well uh, I guess if you are craving the chocolate this is better than going in for the real thing, just keep portions low because calories do add up.
Cheese = once again, I don't like dairy
White Potato = try mixing it up with sweet potatoes or perhaps making "mashed cauliflower" (although, watch out, cauliflower may make you gassy! ha ha)
Cream Cheese = no no no - way too fatty, I am sorry!
Deli Meats = if you get the all natural kind (that actually is semi-expensive.. ugh...) then yes, they are good for you but that processed CRAP like Oscar Meyer or something is TERRIBLE!
Cut the smartpop, subway (It's okay in a crunch, but fast food shouldn't be a staple), weight watcher's bread (it's most likely not even bread x.x), sugar-free hot chocolate, and deli meat, unless you can find some that doesn't have weird stuff in it.
Try just normal popcorn, making sandwiches at home is not hard, and most 'diet' food is crap.
It's just my opinion, but 'sugar free', 'fat free', 'weight watchers', and 90% of all other 'dieters' foods need to be discontinued, the current stock burned, and the creators shot. They're (mainly) just chemicals, and lead to more unhealthy eating habits than ice cream and fried cheesecake. I treat artificial sweeteners and chemically processed food-products as indulgences.
Look up the food pyramid, try to stick to it, it's pretty handy. :]
Why do I get bad cramps after I eat?
Suspect lactose intolerance when abdominal cramps are a problem, especially after breakfast when milk products are consumed. Lactose... Read more
