I want to give up junk food permanently... who's with me?

Quote  |  Reply
Tonight is Halloween, so I'm stuffed to the gills with candy even though I didn't go trick or treating! Funny how that works, huh?

But, I really want to give up junk food. I've tried before and failed miserably. Does anyone else want to do this with me?

We don't have to go all out the first day, but, by Christmas, I want to get rid of the cravings, the longing and the junk food.

Who's in?

I'd love to do that but I don't know if I could. What do you count as junk food?

Junk food is just a distant memory LOL.  I bet the candy hangover will be a good start for backing off.
I'm thinking like hamburgers, hot dogs, chocolate, unhealthy milkshakes, candy, sugary sweets, like everything.... cake, pie, anything fried... I'm saying like full-blown non junk food.... If we did it together do you think you could?

I'll do it but i'm having a piece of apple pie on thanksgiving! I decided that last week :)
Other than that, let's do it! I'm excited! So when are you going to start?

hey I'm in!!!!
But but....those things are sooo good!

How about, instead of giving them up... just re-invent them and find new ones that are more calorie friendly.

There are lots of desserts and things like that you can have without killing off 1k calories (more like 200 or 300...and thats a lot more manageable!)
oooh i'll do this with you......i need it SOO BADLY!!! i really need to give up chocolate......i swear i have the WORST sweet tooth ever!!! i think i could eat only chocolate the rest ofmy life......but not anymore!!! starting now!!!
I'm starting today!!!! I'm having one mini twix bar though, just so I don't go crazy. I think we should start with one or two small treats a day like a small cookie or candy and then eventually we'll just stop altogether. If we ever do have a major craving for something, we will have to find something lower calorie. I really really want to stop relying on food for everything and I think this is a good way to start.

I vow to only eat one piece of junk food everyday (small cookie, small twix, the treat must be under 100 calories) and eventually I will give it up entirely.

Btw: that piece of pie on thanksgiving is fine. I'm not saying we're never going to eat junk again, but just as little as possible...
I like the idea of having a little treat every day WAY better than completely giving up junk food. If I try to give up junk food completely I will go crazy and then eat a bunch of it all at once. I have to have a something here and there to satisfy my craving. :-)

I'm with Lorik and sarah_b -- why ban it from your life?  If you do and then you slip up you will feel guilty -- and that just starts a downward spiral.

I haven't eaten any real junkfood in a couple of months, and don't really crave it (funny thing, twice I have purchases sour gummi worms (my fav), and I just realized that both packages are still in the bags they were put in at the register, never did eat them.), but I think if I started looking at it as taboo foods, I'd be more inclined to cheat.  Right now, I know if I want it, I can eat it, just have to make allowances for it later...

I'm gonna join this...but with my own twist...which I'm seeing others do as well!

I too want to kick the cravings for carby things in general in the butt.  so for me, I'm going to say 100-150cals worth of sweets or 'junk' a day is allowed in my diet.  Any more than that, and I'll need ya'll to kick my own butt for me haha

jazzislove I like your twist on this challenge. I find also that 100-150cals of sweets is reasonable. I'm not going to join in this because I hardly ever eat junk anymore anyway.

wannabehott great to see that you are starting earlier than christmas, there is no reason not to do so. Good luck and you will make it this time.
no thanks!! if i tried to completely kick all those tasty things i'd only end up miserable and craving them. it is very possible to enjoy junk on occasion and maitain and healthy weight. you just have to fit them in to an otherwise healthy balance diet. what is life without an occasional slice or two of pizza or a cookie? not one i wanna live!
Hamburgers aren't junk food...Just buy 90/10 or leaner chop meat and make them yourself.

Or Turkey Burgers, get wheat buns and easy on the cheese and you can still have them without going all 900 calorie Jack in the Box Ultimate Cheeseburger on your insides.

BTW, i'm not going to do this because I think it's why diets fail. You ask yourself to do something that's almost impossible then beat yourself up when you cheat. I think once a week it's ok to have one piece of candy like a candy bar or muffin or something. None of us got fat by eating one candy bar a week or one every two weeks. Then we can still enjoy it without the guilt and it's only adding a few hundred calories for the whole week. That is something I could do for the rest of my life I think, cutting it all out completely I don't think I could. If you try and cut it out all together good luck! You're stronger then me! ;-)

oh i never eat friend things.. my mom hates it and thinks its too fattening.. i also eat like once a month outside.. i usually just go home aand eat.. as for as of hamburgers, hot dogs, milkshakes, cake, pies i never eat those things.. except homemade hamburgers.. which are good... my mom also has this strict rules about hotdogs.. in the past 4 years i only ate them three times or so and that was behind her back =P/ my mom is a health food freak.. its the chips thats killing me.. i snack on them alot.. so i forbade my mom to get me any.. but i do eat a small piece of chocolate everyday because it is good for your heart, not a huge bar, just a small piece, also so i wont feel deprived. but i can not quite coffee.. im addicted.. especially because i study about 4 hours a day after school cuz its my last year and everythying is piling up. i do hope i can overcome my stupid chips addiction.. with my mom's help and my motivation and logging everything here i think i will stay on track. i love this website.

and for me, once a week, i have a day where i can eat all my cravings.. but not overdo it..  because if u ban yourself from these things the diet WILL eventually fail.. like many of my friends had.. and mine too and ull gain all the weight and more again in no time. just try fitting it in, without overdoing it, and also not consume more than the calories u r allowed to consume everyday.

I'm fine with you guys making your own tweeks to my plan for yourselves! I'm only having one thing a day until i feel much less reliant on food. I've tried to give up junk like right away before and I never lasted more than a week.
ME! I've already given up quite a bit of stuff- today I realized I hadn't had candy in.. gosh forever. (Food allergies- half godsend, half pain in the ass). I really want to give up tortilla chips though- they are my BIGGEST downfall.
Funny thing though- tonight my boyfriend and I were going to go to this FANTASTIC ice cream place on our  corner (mm homemade soy ice cream!) and I set aside cals for it and now I don't even really want some. It's expensive so I won't buy it if I'm not in the mood. Why do you think I got over the cravings?
I am in, everything is out  but maybe once in a while black licorice.

the more you try to abolish junkfood from your diet, the more you'll want it and the more likely you'll be to binge on it - just a warning.

don't cut it out completely, just cut down.
