I'm not sure if this is in the right place- if it isn't, please, move it.
Over the past eight months or so, I've lost about thirty pounds, going from moderately overweight to the lowest end of normal. I promised myself I wouldn't go below 120... or 115... and I'm now weighing in at 110.
I don't binge or purge, and never go below 1200 calories a day, typically eating between 1400 - 1600. I'm sedentary, and completely out of shape.
However, though I'm content with how I look, I still usually eat at a defecit, and wouldn't mind loosing a bit more. It's become something of a habit- though I'm still tempted to eat random things when I'm full, simply because they're tasty, I usually resist.
I'm just not as hungry anymore. At the end of a day of freestyle eating, I count up my calories and realize that I haven't eaten enough- so I'll get up and force myself to eat a bit more.
I know all the awful consequences of having an ED, and am terrified of developing one. Can a habitual defecit be considered an ED? Can it lead to one? What are the warning signs?
Reason: Moved from Weight Gain to Health and Support.
i work on an eating disorder unit and have for six years...... no it doesnt sound like you experiencing a disorder, your body will level out at some point and 1400-1600 will eventually be maintenance..... now at that point if you find yourself at maintenance and you begin cutting and cutting cals, to the point your below a normal diet then you might be concerned!
if 120 was your goal, and then 115, then 110, and now even 110 isn't good enough... that doesn't sound too healthy at all. i used to work at an eating disorder clinic as well, and there's a lot of eating disorders that start as just harmless constantly eating at a deficit. the part about "losing a bit more," sometimes never ends, so keep in mind that it is a very slippery slope.
if eating at a maintenance amount and not at a deficit makes you uncomfortable, then you maybe starting an unhealthy relationship with your eating habits. may i ask how tall you are?
I'm 5 foot 5... but I'm pretty certain that I'm getting all the protein, fiber, vitamins, ect that I need, and I still have my period.
According to the site, my maintainence is 1,700. Today I'm trying to eat at least 2,000, though not counting particularly.
I'm going to try to do this at least once a week, and start never eating below 1,500.
Any more advice?
How old are you?
well 110 is pretty low for 5'5" so i would definetly work on maintanence and stop trying to loose.... i hesitate to tell you that you have an eating disorder because i have no professional license or expertese to make such a diagnosis. in addition it is normal with weight loss to not fall into "continually unsatisfied mood." from what i've read that is normal.... you are used to seeing yourself a certain way.... it takes your brain a while i suppose to recognize the new you.....however i will say if this is trully concerning you it wouldnt hurt to speak with a doctor.
Is there someone you can talk to you about this? If you are a teenager, is there a parent, guidance counselor, doctor, therapist, trusted aunt or uncle, an adult friend of the family? Sometimes you fail to see things so plainly obvious to those who love you.
I am not a medical professional however I would be concerned with what you have described above. We are unable to diagnose you here. You need to seek outside help.
This might help shed some light:
Thanks for everyone's concern.
I scored a five on the test nycgirl provided, which I know doesn't prove anything, but is still somewhat comforting.
I've decided to make a concious effort on maintaining/gaining a bit of weight- (peanut butter, anyone?) and ensuring that I always eat no less than my daily burn.
Instead, I'll probably shift to starting a bit of excercise (yes, taking that into account with my daily caloric needs) to help tone up, get healthy, look/feel better...
I've got a doctor's appointment in a month or so; I'll be sure to talk to her then about my worries. Once again, thanks. :)
