You know i posted a topic the other day about chewing and spitting. I had never seen anyone do it before and i was just curious on everyones opinion. I never said i was going to do it and had now plans to try it. I get on here all the time to see the same topics and the same comments constantly, and the first time i try to post something a little different, CC shut my topic down. I understand that CC doesn't want to promote spitting and eating and that was not my intent of bringing it up but we as people should be able to discuss the subject....thanks CC!!
Reason: Moved from Weight Loss to Calorie Count Plus forum
If you would have posted something in the lounge and asked why people do it and why you shouldn't do it... then it would have been different. I think CC allows us to talk about A LOT of things. However trying to figure out which ED is ok to try is not OK. I know you didn't say you were going to do it, however you might have asked what would be wrong with it once in a while?
There are a lot of people on here with horrible Eds. I am confident that whoever removed the post was not trying to upset you. Only trying to protect others that may have read your post and said... "Chewing and spitting, now that's something I haven't thought of."
Without readying the horrible, nasty consequences.
CC isn't in the practice of allowing the discussion (and possible promotion) of something that is a one-way street to an ED!
What is there to discuss apart from the fact its a dangerous habit to start and serves no purpose?
Yeah well there might be people out there that say "chewing and spitting, i never thought of that" but there are also a lot of people out there that might be doing it and would like to hear others opinions and advice on the issue. I have seen several threads that have been a lot worse. I have never seen CC shut down a thread that says "oh i and 5'7 and weigh 120 lbs and i just can't loose any more!". To me that is just as serious of a problem, that some one with those stats feels that they still need to loose weight. But the fact of the matter is everyone is able to voice the same opinion over and over again and this was no different.
But then your post would probably be moved to Health & Support as thats where a lot of people with ED post for help & advise about how to STOP doing what they're doing. The fact that you posted it at all suggests that you were looking for someone to say 'thats a good idea, lets try it'!- not to say you were, but thats how it came across to me? If its a discussion on tricks that people with ed use, then I can't see how CC would allow it to continue- I've seen them shut down/delete similar threads.

Shanna...
Are you looking for justification to begin chewing and spitting? Because you won't find that here.
You asked a question, specifically what we thought about this behavior, and we answered. If that isn't the answer you were looking for, I'm sorry, however that's the answer you've gotten and will get, should you ask again.
If you'd like a discussion about the benefits, if any (and there aren't any) of Chewing and Spitting, you can ask, however.. you need to ask specifically that. And you need to understand that alot of people ask questions like you asked because they ARE looking for justification to do something that, deep inside, they know is a bad idea.

Shanna, If you see a thread which you believe violates the posting guidelines please report it to the moderators by using the "report violation" button on the top of every thread. This way we are notified of a problem in the thread and can act accordingly. Though the moderators are a dedicated team who only want what is best for the forums and the members of Calorie Count, we cannot possibly read every single thread every day. Therefore we do depend on the forum members to let us know when there is a problem that violates the posting guidelines or the spirit of Calorie Count. Thanks.
Well you have obviously missed the point. I don't think that discussing something should be a violation. I think people should be free to talk about what they want. I never said I wanted to try the chewing and spitting, it was just something I had never saw and I wanted to start a discussion about it. If you all are so concerned about the people who do have this problem than maybe you shouldn't have shut down the topic. Who are any of you to say that there wasn't some one out there that may have been able to use this thread as an out reach for help. I feel it was very judgemental on all of your parts. Just because one person posted for this reason or another posted for that reason doesn't mean that I had the same reasons. Instead of jumping to conclusions that I must be considereing it maybe some one should have asked. As you can see by my picture I enjoy eating very much. I guess this is where we will have to agree to disagree. shanna
NO I was not looking for justification. I just thought it was a topic worth discussing. I will refrain from posting such a horrible thing again as it has semmed to have ruffled a bunch of feathers not to mention my own. I did not post it to ruin mine or any one elses day, just thought it was a different topic for discussion. I get tired of seeing the same threads all day long. Thanks
No irshmum I was not looking for someone to say it is a good idea and no i don't want to try it. I simply wanted to discuss it as i had never seen or heard of it before....thanks for judging me before you knew me thought because lets be honest with me being over weight that has never happened before. shanna
Shanna,
This is your OP from yesterday's thread:
Original Post by shanna1922:
I was watching a show the other day and the girl was spitting out her food. I mean I understand if you spit out everything you eat it's bad but if you wanted something really bad you knew you shouldn't eat would it hurt to chew it up to get the taste kill the craving and then spit it out?
From reading your post again, it does not appear that you were posting to discuss the dangers of C&S but rather wondering what the harm would be in the situation you described above. This is how eating disorders/disordered eating begins.
Also, you do not have to be a certain weight or BMI to have disordered eating or an eating disorder. In fact, there are many people who are considered a healthy weight or over weight that experience disordered eating.
Please understand, that while we understand your frustration, we have to follow and uphold the Posting Guidelines. Calorie Count Plus's mission is to promote healthy and sustainable weight management. Nothing about Chewing & Spitting is even remotely healthy. This is why your thread was locked. It was not deleted because there actually were some helpful responses on the thread.
For the most part, members are allowed to discuss whatever they like. But they must abide by the Posting Guidelines as well as About.com's User Agreement.

How on earth did I judge you? As a life-long heavy person I can understand people pre-judging 'fat' people before they actually get to know them, but you stated 'would it hurt to chew it up to get the taste, kill the craving and then spit it out'- to anyone (not just me as you can tell from your responses) reading that sentence alone that indicates that you want someone to say- 'Gosh, yes that sounds like a good way to kill a craving- go for it'. A discussion followed but you obviously didn't get the response you wanted because you posted about it again?!
BTW- I have/had an ED for 15-odd years- one that I fight every day- despite weighing 175lbs!
thanks undertherainbow for putting in what she said.
Shanna,
No one is trying to ruffle your feathers, in fact I care. What you said indicated that you wanted to know what would be wrong to do it once in a while to kill the craving. What we are trying to tell you is doing it once in a while can turn into everyday, every meal, and all of the time. Even though someone may think they have it under control... they don't!
I understand we might have misunderstood you and for that I am sorry. However, what you wrote and what you meant might have been two different things. Please know that most people on here are only trying to help... no one wants to make anyone upset or get their feelings hurt.
So I guess to answer your question, regardless of how much you do it or when you do it, it's still disordered eating. I also know that I crave things everyday and all of the time, if I tried what you said I would be on a one way path to a horrible eating disorder. Please know they pulled the post because they cared and not to upset you.
If you would like to talk to someone about healthy ways to take care of cravings please email me. Keeping healthy things to snack on at the house is a sure way to feel good about snacking. It all starts at the grocery store! I'm close to my goal weight and it was a long, hard journey. I have done it without diet pills and without starving myself, if you want advice or friendly support feel free to email me :). I will do my best.
On your side, not against you,
Jen
People are responding the way they are because the fact is that people don't just wake up one day and think I'm going to severely restrict my caloric intake to a dangerously low level because I'm fat or I'm going to throw up everything I eat today
No. Eating disorders develop over time.
They tend to start out with distress over body image, leading to an over-importance on appearance and specifically thinness, leading to obsession with calories and food and thinness, leading to fear of calories, gaining weight and beginning habits of severe restriction or purging.
Chewing and spitting is regarded by the medical community as a precursor to other purging behavior.
It is the kind of thing that someone who is struggling internally with food issues would think about.
And it falls into the category of habits that exhibit signs of an eating disorder. So the only way in which you can discuss it here, is to explain why it's not healthy.
Do not try to justify any unhealthy weight loss habits in our forums. Thanks
It's an onset of an eating disorder if taken to the extremes. I can't say that I don't do it though.
Is jump roping as good an exercise as running?
In terms of calorie burning, moderate jumping is about equal to running a 10-minute mile, although calorie burning is always a function of time... Read more
