does drinking water keep your metabolism going? for example, if i'm in between meals but drinking water, will it keep my metabolism active just as it would if i were eating?

Keeping well hydrated is good for you but since water is calorie free I don't think it would impact your metabolism.
I was trying to find something on line for you but apparently I'm not punching in the right keywords. I know it helps to give you a feeling of fullness, I don't know if it activates your metabolism.
If you drink ice water your body does have to work to heat it up to body temp - this can be useful. Drinking 8 12oz. glasses of ice water a day can add as much as 200 calories to your daily burn figure.
I wouldn't depend solely on this as a weight loss method, but it's nice to know that the water mug in the fridge is giving me a slight helping hand along the way :)

Melkor is right on plus water has so many other great benefits you should be drinking tons of it anyways. ;-)
