My cereal to milk ratio is 4:1. I really only want it so that about half of my cereal is moist. Would using water instead be absolutely disgusting? Or would the taste of the cereal be strong enough since it's such a small amount of water in comparison?
just use a little less milk- skim milk. i dont stress too much over how much milk i drink becasue it is worth it for the benefits- calcium and protien and everything
Do you use milk in your oatmeal? I use water to make it and then add milk when it is done to thin it out and give it a bit of creaminess. I use skim milk.
I agree with others as for the final decision, it is your taste that will matter, let us know how it goes.
i love soymilk in my cereal, but i don't usually buy soymilk. when i've used skim milk in the past, i've found it quite unfulfilling/water-like. so i have, several times, substituted water. it's like making a sauce w/broth instead of cream--not as oh-so-yummy, but also somewhat decent.
haha i tried that once when i only had a tiny bit of milk left. i honestly couldnt taste the difference.
thanks for the fast replies!
halizabeth, I use water only in my oatmeal. I generally hate the taste of milk and can only stand it in cereal.
I'll give the water a shot tomorrow morning and let you guys know how it goes!

Why not just eat the cereal dry if you hate milk that much? I've mixed water and milk half and half when I was almost out and it was bearable, but I'd think water by itself would be GROSS.
yeah, please update us on how it goes because I might try it. I'm a college student and usually dont have milk available.
I LOVE cereal but i can't stand the taste of milk and I always use an absolute minimum amount. I've always thought about what it would be like to just use water instead, but I've never actually tried it. Good to know I'm not alone! Though I think I will give it a shot tomorrow, ha.
i actually tried eating cereal with water and i'd have to say the taste was bearable but its just not the same. I think water actually makes the cereal soggier faster.
Nowadays, i first pour in cold water and then add in enough milk to make the color more appealing.
Not only do I think that it would taste awful (probably just from how it's been beat into me that you put milk on your cereal) but if you use that little milk, it would probably hardly help your calorie intake. Also, milk is good. All those ad campaigns aren't pulling your leg -- milk is great for you. Perhaps you should consider doing something else, like replacing all of your sugar with Splenda or making sandwiches with romaine lettuce instead of bread. But don't cut out on milk--just cut down to skim.
try unsweetened vanilla almond breeze for 10 calories per 1/4 cup (1/4 cup is enough to make a serving of cereal relatively soggy).
it tastes better than skim milk anyway.
A little milk is good for you. Women need calcium and you do not get the same benefits from a supplement as you do from real food. I use 1% fat free milk. At first switching from 2% to 1% was hard but now 2% seems thick to me. I just use 1/2 to 1 cup of milk on my cereal in the morning.
I would use things like almond breeze or skim milk, but I'm sure they're more expensive. Also, until college starts up, I'm stuck at home and my mom will refuse to buy that stuff anyway.
To guard against potential nastyness, I just did half milk and half water today, and it was perfectly fine. So tomorrow I'll probably up it to 1/4 milk, 3/4 water because I agree the color change without any milk may throw me off.
Otherwise, I think it'll be just fine :)
You need the fat to absorb vitamins from your meals, you would be better off with real 2 percent or whole milk.
putting the nutritional mumbo jumbo aside, yes ive put water on cereal. Yes... skim milk tastes absolutley no different than it.
I personally drink full fat, and cant stand the low fat stuff... not healthy at all.
I absolutely hate milk. Haven't drank it in 25 years. But have recently been introduced to soy milk. The Light Vanilla is awesome!
