Water retention?

Quote  |  Reply

My hands keep getting swollen in the afternoon and the only thing that honestly comes to mind is water retention.  I don't eat much salt and with an increase yesterday (had canned soup) and then today (hebrew national 97% hot dogs) it does make sense.  But... what do I do to fix it?

I've honestly never had my hands swell up like this.  I had to take my rings off both times and it's annoying me.  I've been drinking water.  Tried a little cranberry juice (not cocktail, real juice) to see if that'd help but even with that around lunch I'm still as bad as yesterday.

Any ideas and/or remedies?  Not sure about the otc stuff so figured I'd check here first for other ways.  I hate taking meds if I don't have to.

You should ask your doctor about this.  Fluid retention is usually a fairly minor, unnoticeable thing.... a few lbs suddenly appearing on the scales..... it is not the same as 'swelling'.  The swelling you're describing could be something trivial or it could be indicative of a more serious problem.  When you see old ladies with very swollen ankles that's often because they have heart problems... for example.  Hence why I'd suggest talking to your doctor rather than self-medicating or just putting it down to 'fluid retention'.

Good luck

Is it really warm where you live, sometimes heat can cause swelling in hands and feet??

I also have this happen when its really cold, hands swell so much that i cant make a fist.

My checkup was good, unless you count the 30 BMI and still being anemic.  I've been anemic most of my life so it's just keep with the current diet unless I want to go on supplements and need colace and enemas again.  I'm more active now and working harder at losing weight so with some hard work and luck I'll get it right this time.

It has been hot and more muggy then usual, kayeanne, so I wonder if that's part of all this.  Woke up totally fine this morning so hopefully whatever it was is over.  My sodium the other day was over 3500 so something tells me that plus the weather could very well have been it.  If it happens again though I'll call the doc.

Idk, but last week I was swelling almost, fingers toes, abdomin everywhere for about 3 days, then i woke up on the fourth day, and could not stop urinating for a whole day, and the swelling was gone, so i dont know is thats whats called "water retention" or not.
