What should I do about water weight?
Asked by anonymous on Dec 08, 2008 in Weight Maintenance

I lost 117 lb in 3 years, and now, I’m 109-110 lb at age 41. I was big and have always overeaten since I was born, but now I’m scared to eat and drink any kind of liquid. I hate to see my bloated belly in the morning because I’m afraid of gaining weight. I have to do exercise right away before I eat something to start the day. What should I eat to not make my body look flabbier or be paranoid all day long?

Answer

Water retention shows up as swollen feet and fingers at the end of the day or puffy bags under your eyes upon awaking.  But bloating confined to the belly is usually due menstrual swelling, constipation, lactose intolerance or several other gastrointestinal conditions.  To relieve generalized swelling, restrict your sodium intake to 2300 mg a day and drink ample fluids, but for GI track bloating, look for a culprit such as lactose or sugar alcohol and eat a high-fiber diet and fluid to prevent constipation.  If the problem persists, see a doctor for a correct diagnosis; however, if you screen positively for an eating disorder, talk to a dietitian or therapist.
