Watermelon - The fruit that discriminates against single people

Quote  |  Reply
I live by myself, and as a result I buy just enough food for me.

While making my grocery list I thought about the fruit that I would like to get for the week.

What about watermelon? My brain asked.  Then I responded with "That's a family fruit!"

My rant is this, I love watermelon it just tastes like summertime and I'd really love to buy it in the store but I never do.  Its too expensive and there is too much fruit and I'd just throw it out.

So I've decided that watermelon discriminates against single people.  Next time I'm in the produce section of my local grocery store I will feel the watermelon's gaze while i'm perusing the peaches.  I know the watermelon will be thinking the way a grandmother does at christmas or a wedding "it'll be alright, soon you'll be with someone."

Ok, that all was silly, but the bottom line is I WANT TO EAT WATERMELON TOO!

How about buying the melon, cut it in half. Eat one half. Cut the other in cubes, and freeze on a tray, once frozen put in a freezer bag. (If you freeze them on a tray wiped with a little bit of vegetable oil, the cubes won't stick to the tray, and they freeze seperate so you can take cubes out as required)

I like the idea of frozen watermelon! :)  That sounds yummy :)

It's brilliant in the Summer! You could even chuck the melon in a blender and whizz it up, and freeze it in ice cube trays. Next time you make a smoothie, pop a couple of melon cubes in for a nice iced treat.
i bet if you hang around the watermelon long enough, a single guy will have the EXACT same thought. maybe you two can "go back to your place and share it!" WIIINK!
ha ha ha!!

Well it would be the produce section!

I know my supermarket sells small containers of fresh cut up watermelon and pineapple. It's a rip off by all accounts, but if you really want it badly enough, it could be worth it.
They always have it on the supermarket salad bar, so I get some and also fresh pinapple.  I'm seeing the little sugar baby melons now, about the size of a large honeydew.  They are locally grown.

Freezing watermelon is a GREAT idea.  Yum!

Hmmm....I too have no problem eating a watermelon by myself, over several days of course.  But I usually buy one about the size of a basketball, seedless, but the frozen idea sounds great!  I put salt on mine though, kinda ruins the point of it...but better than potato chips!
lmao... produce section... I love it... :D
Here, grocery stores sell watermelons that are already cut (sliced, halved, quartered, etc.), although it's much cheaper if you buy the whole fruit. Like 1/4 of a watermelon can cost 3.49, when you can just buy the whole one for 4.99. However, I live alone as well, so I find it more convenient to buy the 1/4.
Give me a watermelon and I'll show you a magic trick; I'll make it disappear!

I'm just a fruit lover, and I'm growing my own watermelons for the purpose of making myself sick on watermelons. Then maybe I won't want them all the time!
Mmm, sweet sweet watermelons.

Cut it in half, give me a spoon, and stand clear XD

Pre-sliced watermelons can be expensive, but if you really really want one and you can't finish a whole in time before it spoils, I suppose they could be a way of treating yourself :)
Watermelons now come in single-serve size.  LOL.  Now, I have to say, I have NOT eaten one and cannot say for sure what they cost, but I'm seeing tiny little cantaloupe sized watermelons in every store in my area.  If anyone has any experience with them, can you please comment?  I've been sorely tempted.  I can't say if they are expensive, but in relation to the precut, prepackaged stuff, I can't see them being any more expensive than that, and much more fresh!  Glad to have been so totally un-helpful here, I'm sure.  :-)
Mmmm those tiny watermelons are soo good. Very much worth the price, much more flavor and better texture than your typical big watermelon or pre-chopped pieces.
either buy the half watermelon, slices or the whole and cut it up and put it in a bowl... that way u can go to the fridge how many times u want and prepare a yummy fruit salad with the watermelon balls/cubes and top it with fat free cool whip or reddi whip.

i accidently put the bowl in the way back of the fridge and some of the cubes were frozen and pretty hard (seeing that watermelon is mostly water) so it should last a bit longer if u make that "mistake"
I've made this Watermelon Granita from leftover watermelon. It's pretty tasty and it condenses a big chunk of watermelon into a few smallish bowls of granita. The recipe calls for a lot of sugar but I never use even half that much. I bet you could use Spenda too.
My grocery store sells halves and cut parts of watermelon for those that can't use a whole watermelon.

ask your produce department, or maybe you can split one with someone or a couple someones.

 I've also seen smaller ones that I could easily use up in a week or so before it went bad. I just buy less of other fruits and eat alot of watermelon that week, enjoying it before the seaon ends and I'm back to trucked in apples and force ripened oranges {living in ND does have a few drawbacks}
Oh yeah, we have the little ones too. My hubby doesn't want me to buy them because he loves watermelon and eats half a large one at a time, amazing! I don't like how they take up so much space in the fridge but these days I usually cut them up and mix it with cantaloupe.
at the grocery store i work at they have personal watermelons. just enough for 1-2 people. maybe ask about them next time you go grocery shopping.
