Hey guys, i would like some help in getting my body weight up. Im dangerously underweight.
I am 6'4 and only 125lbs, I am now trying to eat three times a day. My appetite isnt what it use to be and im trying to get to where I can eat more.
The doctor was no help in giving me advice on my body and how to gain weight, and no one I spoke to in my area gives me any helpful information. My total daily calorie intake is only 1400-2000 at best. my protein intake is daily 40-50g daily also. I have a high metabolism and am trying to find out how I can gain 80lbs in 6months to 2yrs.
I have a gym membership but stop going cause of my low body weight. was afraid to do more harm than good.
Any help and advice would be great. If i make significant gains useing the advice I will post about them so others can use it also
I don't know where you live but we have a place here in MD called Smoothie King. It is a little costly but they have a drink there called "The Hulk". It is super high in protein as well as calories. I love them! Check out their website www.smoothieking.com.
I am underweight as well. I am 5'8 and 113lbs. I want to be around 125-130. My calorie intake is generally around 1800..and this website says I need 2300. So I have been trying to include more smoothies, milkshakes ect. I have also been drinking Boost. Which is rather gross but if you throw in some Hershey Syrup..it isn't so bad. Hope this helps somewhat..
Thankyou for the help, I will look into this tomorrow then. we have a smoothie king, but i have not been there very much. I will give the hulk a try.
ok, I found something else today that bets Smoothie King. Cold Stone Creamery milkshake. Wow...I got a small chocolate/peanut butter ice cream with a extra spoon of pb. The extra pb was a over kill but for a small it had 1280 calories!!! There are other flavors with just as high of a calrorie count.
You aren't eating enough calories.. Spread your meals throughout the day and don't gorge yourself or food will just end up making you sick to think about it. Eat at least 6 times a day. Shoot for 5,000 calories a day. I can generally only take in 3000-3500 and I'm about 6 foot and 145, but I still shoot for 5k.
Do some strength training with this and I will promise you that you WILL gain weight. In little as a week, I will guarentee you will add a pound or so. Keep it up and your gains will get better.
I did this for 3 months a couple of years ago and I went from 145 to 165. I stopped doing it and went back to my old habits and lost it all. This time I'm sticking with it. I've picked up 2 lbs this week so far.
Go to GNC or whatever and buy weight gainer. It's all the same when trying to put all mass. Intake as much calories as possible, if you don't do this, you will never pick up weight. A peanut butter sandwich and 16oz of milk is 640 calories alone.
Taking in a lot of calories is good but eating too much junk food is bad. This website is great because it keeps track of your calorie intake. I was like you at first. Determine to gain weight but using my stomach to tell me to tell me when I was full. I didn't realize I was only eating 1300 calories or less some days. It's a life lifestyle change and not a temporary diet.
Here's what I learned and has helped me out a lot. Once you wake up immediately start eating. Getting a head start helps me eat more later in the day. I usually mix it up everyday so I don't get sick of the same thing. One day I would have a bagel with peanut butter and jelly and a milk to drink (over 600 calories). Another day I would have 2 servings of granola cereal with 1 cup of milk (600 calories). Once in a while I eat pancakes, eggs, bacon, and sausage with cranberry juice.
Drink juice or milk with all your meals. Not only is it healthy but adds a lot of calories. One cup of cranberry juice is 140 calories x 3 a day adds up.
Buy weight gainer powder at GNC. This helps put alot of calories and alot of protein in your body. I take one that adds 750 calories a day although I just drink half of it since I have no trouble eating anymore. But when I'm low on my calorie intake for the day I'll take the full serving.
Work out 3 days a week with heavy weights. More weight fewer reps. This website helps: http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/cyberpump12.h tm
Buy alot of food: yogurt, trail mix, cottage cheese, fruits, avocados, cheese, multi grain crakers/bagels/breads, peanut butter, pasta with meat sauce, etc.
When I first started out I was forcing food down my throat just to get my calories. It helps when you have a goal. I had 3 goals a day: try to eat 1000 calories before 12pm, try to eat 1000 calories before 4pm, and try to eat 1000 calories before 9pm. Breaking it down helped me alot.
Hope this helps.

I really wanted to thank you for this particular post. I am new to this site. I am 5'8", 100 lbs. I am also looking to get up to 125-130. I just started with the generic ensure plus from Walmart but I don't think that is gonna be enough. I will try adding in the hershey syrup because that stuff is pretty gross too. I live in the DC area and so I am going to find a smoothie king so that I can try it out. I have a low lactose tolerance so hopefully it won't upset my stomach too much. lol
I haven't introduced myself, yet (will in a minute, but this post caught my eye), but I cannot choke down Ensure. Several years ago, I saw a nutritionist and we compared the calories of Ensure and Carnation Instant Breakfast made with whole milk. Everything was basically the same, calorie wise, and all the rest were real close, but Carnation tastes really good (I use the Rich Milk Chocolate). I'm 45, 5' 2" and weigh around 86 pounds (messed up metabolism for the past 18 years). I'm trying to get in 5,000 calories a day..it's HARD! Avocado and cream cheese sandwiches are high calorie, I also eat a spoonful of peanut butter every time I go near the kitchen. I'm definitely going to try the Cold Stone milkshakes!! (thanks for that tip!). I also do resistence exercises because I am soooo tiny I'm afraid that too much exercise will eat up everything I eat and I'll never gain my weight back. I'd like to get up to 110 to 115 pounds, see if I look and FEEL healthy, if not, I'll keep adding pounds until I get there.
Well, I suppose that was kind of my introduction :)
introduced myself..
im not worried about my weight but i should, i want to gain more, but im already overweight.
im on 13, and weight 132lbs and im only 4'7", my gut is growing and its a think to show :D
i dont eat much stuff bad, but i dont east ANYTHING good. D:
o well, i feel awesome as fat :D
I'm in kind of a similar boat, but not as severe.
I'm 5'10 and 120 at 21 years old.
My goal is to be 140 by April (5 months). This site really helps with giving you exact calorie amounts and letting you know what foods are good, and others that are bad. My advice for you is to get on some weight gainers. Also drinks like ensure have lots of protein which helps build muscle. If and when you work out, make sure to drink whey protein before and after you work out. Remember to drink lots of water and try to spread your meals out at 5-6 per day.

So you can log your weight -- which allows you to do the following:
- Plot your weight curve
- Analyze the trend of your weight (see under Recent in the figure above)
- Determine the projected target date (see under Overall in the figure above)
