Weak Wrist's

Quote  |  Reply

As my lift's get heavier im finding im struggling holding the weight's, it's not so much struggling lifting it just actually physically gripping the barbell/dumbell.

I've bought gloves but they didn't help as it seems to be my physcal ability the keep my fingers holding onto that kind of weight, now if im correct this is due to weak wrist muscles rather than weak fingers right???

Now i've bought some wrist straps as a temporary measure to help with the situation and that seems to be helping however i was wondering if anyone could suggest to exercises to strengthen my grip?? because i know the problem is gonig to get worse the heavier i go and i'd rather bring the flagging muscles up rather than learn to depend on wraps.

well i had a friend who hurt her wrist a couple years back, and her doctor recommended some exercises:

1. get a really light weight (1-5 lbs) and hold it with your palm facing down. Then move your wristdown and then back up. Kinda like back extensions. You could alos move your wrist back and forth.

2. Do the above exercise with the back of your hand facing down.

3. (this wasnt suggestes by doc) Use a grip thing [pic down] or a stress ball and squeeze them

i have been having the same trouble.  what a pain in the butt.  i think wrist straps are going to be a resort for me.  but melkor says the farmers walks he's doing are supposed to help w/grip strength.  i've been doing rack pullups w/a towel like krista suggests, and those are really challenging, sort of en route to a one-handed pullup.  articles like this one from t-nation scare me, bec they make me wonder if i'm gonna get huge forearms from working on grip strength.  but the article does offer good advice in gaining strength in that department.

there was a thread on this in the fitness forum where wrist rollers were highly recommended.  good luck, leila.
