Wearing engagement ring on right hand?

Quote  |  Reply

I am engaged and have an engagement ring which I wear on my left hand. Once I get married I plan to have a wedding band which I will also wear on my left hand along with my engagement ring, as will my future husband wear a wedding band on his left hand.

Recently I've been noticing a lot on tv, and out in public lately that a lot there is a trend of women wearing their engagement ring on their right hand and a wedding band on their left hand after they're married.

I'm curious as to how common this is, and if you do this why? Is it derived from family/religous/cultural traditions?

Thanks in advance!

I don't know much about the trend and where it came from.

I'm Greek Orthodox and with our religion when we are engaged the engagement ring is our wedding band and the guy wears it as well.  When engaged it's worn on the left ring finger.  Once married  during the ceremony the priest moves it to right ring finger.  But living here in the US with engagement rings,  I will wear my engagement ring on my left ring finger and when I get married my wedding ban will be worn on my right ring finger.

I've never noticed this? I wore my engagement ring on my left ring finger. The only time it was on my right ring finger was during the wedding ceremony so my Husband could put the wedding band on my left ring finger, the engagement ring was then put on top? I'm Irish RC if that makes any difference? I also recently was given an 'eternity' ring, which is now on top of the other two! LOL! Some of my friends wear their eternity rings on their right ring finger as they don't have the room on their left one? Thats probably confused you even more!

My engagement ring and my band kind of went together. So a couple weeks before the wedding I had them attached to each other, so it's pretty much one ring now, but you don't have to get them put together. The rule is have to the band closest to you.

Kind of like this:

I do this.  The reason is because my engagement ring was custom made and a very unusual shape.  I initially thought that I would get a wedding band made to fit around it and wear them both on the same hand, but I then decided that doing so would ruin the look of the ring.  Plus, I wanted a more substantial wedding band, and it would just be too much on one finger!  Maybe people have been doing it more lately, because it seems like when I got married 3 years ago, everyone thought it was odd, but now I don't hear anything about it.

i would like to wear them both on the same hand (left) but my e-ring is a weird shape that no ring woudl sit flush against it... so if i cant find anything my wedding band will be on my left hand and e-ring on the right.

My ex-wife had two wedding bands.  One was attached to her engagement ring so that the two would sit flush with one another.  The other was a plain wedding band that she wore when she didn't want to wear the diamonds.  Which ever one she was wearing was on her left hand.

Never heard of this for married or engaged women. I've seen more women wearing diamonds on the right hand but usually just as a "regular" ring - ie, not for engagement or wedding. Like, if it's a family heirloom or just a ring that you like and want to wear.

I think whatever you want to do, do it! Whatever is personal and works best for you... go for it.

What I have noticed more is one ring for engagement/wedding. Like a few people mentioned here, if it's unique or larger or simply more comfortable, whatever - not having a separate engagement ring with wedding band that are both worn on the left ring finger.

You wear the ring on your left hand on the fourth finger because there is a belief that there is a vein that runs straight from there to your heart.

In Austria and Germany it is customary to wear the wedding rings on the right hand.

The reason being from what I was told is because,  when you meet or greet someone its customary to shake hands.  Normally shaking with the right hand.  A quick immediate indicator if someone is married or not.

Mine is too. My e-ring is an antique and it has the diamonds set in white gold on top of a yellow gold band. A regular wedding band wouldn't sit flush so I had two grooves cut into in so it would. I never intend to not wear my e-ring as well so the grooves will never be visable, but if I do, I can simply spin the ring around so the grooves are hidden? Custom wedding bands aren't that expensive in the UK, so shop around and you'll get something suitable?

Okies found this out today because I was asking ;)

In some cultures the ring is worn on the right hand, since the right hand is considered more righteous.  Even for left-handed people, the right hand is used for 'righteous' duties, such as greeting another with a handshake, saluting, raising the hand to take an oath, or making the Sign of the Cross.  ( Jesus sat at the right hand of the Father. ) Etymologically, left is related to twisted, crooked and sinister, whilst the words right (-hand) and right (correct) have the same Old-European roots.
