Weekend Damage

Quote  |  Reply

I spent Memorial Day weekend at my family's vacation house in Vermont for the last time (we're selling it). Since it was a bittersweet nostalgic weekend, I decided to let myself indulge in the local foods that have been a huge part of my time there (the french fries at our favorite pub, the homemade ice cream at the local ice cream parlor, an oatmeal chocolate chip cookie from my favorie cafe, and of course the deep fried nacho chips at this little mexican resturant that I swear are the best chips I've ever eaten). Though I do feel slightly guilty about these far from healthy food choices, I don't regret indulging for one last time. However, I am still nervous that I may have un done some of my hard work. How much do you think this unhealthy weekend (from Friday until Monday afternoon) damaged my weight loss? Any advise on how to get myself past the guilty feelings and back on track? Any advise or comments would be appreciated!

Well, I can't tell how much damage you did, because I don't know portion sizes, etc, nor whether you had oatmeal for breakfast, then chips + burrito + cookie for lunch, ice cream in the afternoon, AND then french fries + burger for dinner every day. I mean, those foods are bad, but you can always incorporate things like that.

I would recommend not weighing yourself right away.  All the extra sodium you ate from eating out will just discourage you more. I would just hop right back on the wagon and keep chugging along.  I mean, honestly, even if you ate 4,000 calories a day, that's probably only 2500 extra, max, over 3 days, is only 2 pounds. So maybe you did 2 weeks worth of damage, but do you really think you ate 4000 calories every day?

Don't worry too much about it.

Wow- I am glad I am not the only one.  We went out of town and I decided not to stress and just eat.   We ate out for all meals!!  Ugghh!!  It was a lot of fun but I am back on track today and have decided not to weigh myself until Wednesday and am drinking a ton of water.   I could say don't worry but I am a little worried myself.  Oh well.  Life was meant to be lived.  We'll get back on track and work it off.....

Thanks for the advice! Just to clear things up, I didn't eat all things things on one particular day, it was spread out throughout the weekend (went to the mexican resturant and then the ice cream place one day, the cafe and the pub another), and I started every day with a healthy breakfast (oatmeal and fruit one day, yogurt and fruit another, a veggie omelette on the last). I know the damage probably isn't too bad, it's just after months of constantly eating healthily, so much unhealthy food in one weekend seems a bit overload to me. I'm just having useless anxiety, and though I know I should just put it behind me and move on, I needed that extra reassurance from someone else that it wasn't THAT bad. Thanks again for your input!!

I was sailing in the same boat on saturaday when I had pizza, wine and tiramisu for dinner........and then I was feeling guilty......but then somebody suggested me to drink lot of water, do not weigh  for few days and just add 15 min to excercise routine for a week...........I am doing all above these days.........I am sure just few meals are not that bad.

Infact such cheat days are good to boost body metabolism.

So dont worry........move on

Don't worry about the "damage" what's done is done...just get back on the wagon tomorrow. :)
yeah.. this weekend was hell. lots of alcohol and lots of food in one night made my weekend a very bad one.

Leave the guilt at the door and start over today. You would have had to eat an awful lot to undo months of healthy eating. One pound is 3500 calories, so you would have had to have eaten 3500 more than what you burned. 17,500 extra calories to gain 5 pounds. Additionally, you have made some changes that stick even when you do slip. Your body has gotten used to eating a certain amount of food every day, and is going to send you some pretty strong signals when it's had enough. Not to mention, it sounds like you still made some healthy choices the rest of the time. So, yeah, you probably did a little bit of damage, but I'm sure it isn't as bad as you think.

I totally fell off of the wagon this weekend, too.  Scale showed 4 lbs. more (mostly water gain) but 3 of them are gone again by this morning.

This is going to happen to each and every one of us.  The trick will be for it not to happen too often, and afterwards to get back with the program.

Don't obsess about last weekend.  Just get back on track!

3 pounds for me :-)  I know I didn't eat enoiugh calories for a true weight gain of that amount...bet I gained 1 real one though...I will lose it though.  Life happens.

eh what can you do? treats happen! it wouldn't have been worth it to sacrifice those emotional treats. eat your oatmeal this morning and enjoy the memories. :)

I don't know what I did...

Sat: 222 lbs

Tues: 230 lbs

I probably ate my maintenance some days and maybe one day slightly above...I'm hoping this is mostly water weight.  I did a lot of gardening over the weekend too and was probably dehydrated; could that account for the 8 lb difference? (or a chunk of it?)

Sounds like you had a fun time!~  So you lived it up over the weekend, big deal?  Just get back on, try to eat clean this week, and you will be fine. One bad weekend, doesn't wreck a weight loss plan.

Im a newbie and I love reading all these supportive posts. Especially when they reflect the ideas I'm seeing elsewhere on this site. "All is forgiven, now move on." I was a little nervous myself when the place we planned for lunch did not have nutrition info on its site (Gondolier's pizza). I hope the "Chicago" pita is comparable. Even with a sweet coffee drink after, I stayed on track.

But another time I might not. As an emotional eater, I thank everyone for support and encouragement to stick to the plan!

I tried so hard to walk the straight and narrow, but crashed and burned on Sunday night.  I was at the beach with family and we had big dinners loaded with appetizers and alchohol every night.  Saturday and Monday I did OK, but Sunday I ate everything in sight.

In a way it was useful because I went back and logged all my calories and I saw where I really pile on the unneeded calories.  I think I can indulge in the future and make choices that will minimize the damage.

Does anyone have any strategies you use when you know you are going into a big eating weekend?

This is a great topic because we go to the lake cabin every weekend in the summer.  At home I do okay with counting because I am in control of what food is in the house.  At the lake it is different.  Every one brings food and there is a lot of junk food.  I did not do a good job of controlling my eating this weekend.  It is difficult.  I'm afraid it is going to be a hard summer.

Kris4013....

I have a hard time at the family weekend get aways too.  I did better this weekend then some. (Not perfect....but doable.)  The first thing I did was got exercise in.  I went for a hike, or run, or swim each day.  I also volunteered to cook this weekend....which helped me to control what I ate.  The snacks were hard to pass up, but I tried to fill up on healthier meals and snacks I packed like carrot sticks, apples, etc.

After a bad long weekend of pigging out I found I gained 5 pounds.  How many days does it take to lose that extra water weight and the scale to go back to normal?  Ive been drinking a ton of water today.

the good news for me is usually when I pig out for a few days , as soon as I lower my cals back down my body loses it very quickly!  Just drink water, eat low cals and I'm sure you'lll be back to normal quickly. I usually do not weigh in untill mid to end of week, no point in reinforcing what I already know and making myself upset
