What does your weekly shopping list look like...

Quote  |  Reply
I read a thread on another forum about how intially its so much more expensive to eat healthy. I know for me making a trip to the store every week just doesn't fit into the schedule so for things like produce its hard to keep those around and fresh.

So what do you buy during the week to help aid in your weight loss?

Nani....what's the "tuna salad lunch kit" ?
When I started buying better foods my grocery bill went sky high.  It seems like buying junk food in essence is less expensive.  I do buy lots of fruits and veggies.  Also, I have switched from canned veggies to frozen ones (they have more nutrients) and my grocery store usually has them on sale, like 2 for 5 dollars.  I buy bottled water and sometimes I will buy like the crystal light powder to put into the bottles.  I try to be choosy when it comes to meat.  I haven't found that it's any more to buy lean ground beef than it is to buy the regular kind.  Pretty much, it's the produce that keeps my grocery bill higher, I think.  Anyhow, I think the price out weighs the overall outcome and making my family healthier. And my kids seems to like munching on raw carrots instead of potato chips and I'm OK with that. LOL.
It's from Starkist, it brings a small can of tuna about 6 wheat crackers, a packet of light mayo and a packet of sweet relish. I throw away the relish and eat use half of the mayo and eat it as a snack not a meal the whole thing is 210 calories.
I'm ashamed to admit that my cart is mostly frozen food.  It is just hubby and I at home.  I eat a lot of Healthy Choice meals and canned soup.  Then I have things like frozen pizza and pot pies in the cart for hubby.  I rarely cook and when I do it is usually bison burgers on the grill or chicken on the grill or steak on the grill.  I'm really not sure why I have a stove...I guess for hubby's pizza.
I buy a lot of frozen stuff, too, when it's on sale, and I'm not ashamed to say so! There are soooo many things to do in life, and if one doesn't enjoy cooking (or cooking every day), why should one have to when there are good alternatives?

I went to the grocery store last night. Lean Cuisine stuff was half price (because of the mouse incident, I'm sure!), and my favorite yogurt was on sale, yay!!!! (I get the yogurt ONLY when it's on sale, and had been out of it for over a week, so it being on sale made me very happy!)

So I got:

14 (or so; didn't really count) frozen "spa meal" type frozen meals
10 yogurts
1 cucumber
2 tomatoes
1 pint blueberries
5 bananas
cherries
1 Vidalia onion
1 pint sliced mushrooms
Sargento Stringsters (string cheese)
2% Swiss cheese sandwich slices (2 pkgs/on sale)
1 can no salt organic diced tomatoes
1 can organic kidney beans (which have much less sodium in them than the regular ones do)
1 can of spray olive oil
1 box Cheerios
Kozy Shack butterscotch pudding cups (100 calories/cup, no artificial sweeteners)

And cat food. Gotta buy a humongo bag of dry cat food every other week for the outdoor cat. (He has friends.)

I think that's it. I already had milk, eggs, carrots, spinach, rice, bread, almonds, and other cereal, so didn't need to buy that yesterday.

If you can find a local fruit and vegetable stand in your area, their prices are usually a lot less than a grocery chain's. I use to spend $20-25 on produce at Kroger -- now I spend about $10 or 15 and I buy the same things (tomatoes, bananas, watermelon, cantaloupe, peppers, cucumbers and lettuce.) However -- those are things that I know we'll eat during the week and not just let sit in the fridge and end up having to throw them away. I used to be really bad about overbuying and then having to toss out the food that had gone bad during the week.
I usually shop every 2 weeks, and towards the beginning of the weeks I plan fresher foods with fresh salads and fruits to be eaten, and then toward the end of the 2 weeks I rely on canned beans and frozen mixed vegetables to make soups and stir-frys. I tend to impulse buy, so I make strict list divided into sections for produce, canned/boxed, meat, dairy, frozen.

Standard groceries include: lettuce, tomatoes, bell peppers, cucumbers, apples, oranges and grapes

In the middle of the week I walk to our farmer's market and see what's fresh, too!
I use the following website when planning my grocery shopping, it is a list of The World's Healthiest Foods:

http://www.whfoods.com/foodstoc.php

If you scroll back a bit through my journal, I post actual lists from my grocery shopping adventures.
I shop weekly so that I can keep fresh fruit and veggies around.  I always buy a large bag of fresh spinach (great raw or cooked), seasonal fruit and veggies, La Tortilla Factory tortillas, Laughing cow cheese, non-fat yogurt, canned tomatoes, whole wheat pasta, brown rice, turkey lunch meat, chicken or shrimp, frozen veggies, fat free cheese slices, whole grain bread, non-fat cottage cheese, fat-free plus skim milk, Go-Lean cereal.

But, our grocery store is remodeling, so I am not going to be able to find things very easily anymore!  I hate that because it will take me twice as long to shop.

Perrier
diet pop
chicken
pudding
potato chips
mushrooms, tomatos,lettuce,broccoli,carrots.
12grain bread
fruit, bananas, strawberries, blue berries
corn (in season)
bottle water
sauses for stirfry's, marinate, etc.
Coffee
deli meat
onions, minced garlic
rice cakes- flavored
ground beef
steak for the weekend.
lemon pasta, spagetti
I buy my fresh produce twice a week.  Whatever is in season for my area, because it is cheaper.  Right now its mostly peaches and plums, cukes tomatoes, corn on the cob, and green peppers.  We are lucky to have a mushroom farm in the area, they are always in season.  Potatoes, carrots, onions, zucchini, green peppers.

My local grocery store has a $10.00 a bag freezer.  A bag of shrimp and a bag of salmon every week.

I buy a roast once a month and cut it into steaks.  10 steaks would last me over a month, but I have to share.  We roast a chicken once a week or pick up one already done.  I have stopped picking up the wedges and mayo salads that are next to the chicken.

Bulk store: rice, bulgar wheat, couscous, lentils, spices.  I have really got into lentils lately.

Bottled water, decafe green tea and chamomile tea.

Last bill: $42.00  Next bill produce only.
I go once a week

yoplait 5 to 10

ready pack salad

chicken breast

ground round

avocado, cucumber, broccoli

oatmeal or smart start cereal

milk 2% can't drink soy or skim or even 1%

eggs

which ever frozen dinners are on sale

crystal light on the go

low fat safeway brand soups.
Some of this will last me more than one week.  I do a big shopping about every 3 weeks and just pick up fresh milk, fruit and vegetables during the week.  I cut the chicken into tenders and cutlets and freeze them individually.  I cook all the corn the day I bring it home, and cut some off to freeze.

From the produce market:
3 pounds of beautiful tomatoes
6 ears of sweet corn
a sugar baby watermelon
a head of romaine lettuce
a head of loose leaf lettuce
2 medium size zucchini
1 cauliflower
2 broccoli crowns
3 pounds of carrots
1 sweet onion
1 red and 1 green pepper
1 mango
3 bananas
2 pounds of small red potatoes

From the supermarket
2 large packages of boneless, skinless chicken breasts (on sale)
1 6 oz rainbow trout fillet
1 quart no salt added chicken broth
3 cans low sodium canned tuna
1 bag frozen spinach
1 bag frozen edamame beans
1 box of 36 whole wheat, low fat ravioli (Mama Rosie brand)
1 box of Kashi Golean
1/2 gallon skim milk
1 pint low fat cottage cheese
1 pint low fat ricotta cheese
1 dozen large eggs

From Whole Foods Market
6 cans no salt added beans (black & chickpeas)
1 jar Green Mountain Gringo salsa (It's low in sodium)
1 box of Kashi Golean frozen waffles
2 pounds bulk brown rice
Weekly grocery list?  Seems I am at the store everyday!

I usually buy ground turkey, veggies (frozen and fresh), fruit and fish.  I do sneak snacks once in awhile.  Ops, can't forget the water, low fat milk and diet coke.  My grocery list is pretty simple.
DUP CGolly's shopping list and that's mine too! I make it a challenge for me to only shop around the outside of the store and not go down the aisles. Only getting produce, dairy products, meat, la tortilla whole wheat tortillas and skip the aisles where all the processed foods are. I go to the store once a week for this type of a trip and maybe once a month for staple type items that force me to go down the middle (darnit): brown rice, spices, applesauce, toddler snacks, etc.
