To weigh or not to weigh.....

Quote  |  Reply
I've been really good about watching calories (about 1500 to 1700 a day) and getting to the gym for workouts (5 days a week - cardio mostly, some weights). I had been feeling pretty frustrated with my weight since it didn't seem to be going anywhere. After 5 weeks of being good, I had finally started to show some progress - 3.5 lbs lost!!!  Last week was horrible - I was out of the office on business and just couldn't seem to find the time and the motivation to use the hotel's workout facility.  I went from working out M - F 5 consecutive weeks, to taking 9 days off!!!! (meant to workout on the weekends prior to and after the business trip, but it just didn't happen). Should I bother to weigh myself at the gym today???? Mondays are my normal weigh in day - but I'm worried that if I do, I'll have put back the weight at be discouraged........

Scales are EVIL... I would not until your back onto your routine.
You shouldn't base your whole success or lack of success around what the scale says.  And if you know you've not been consistent with various things, then you can be sure the scale will most likely reflect that.  If you know it's already going to discourage you, then why bother?

Your main concern should be forgetting about your past lack of consistency and coming up with a plan of how to be better prepared next time you go on a business trip, so that this does not happen again.

In the meantime, get yourself back on track with your workouts, etc., and remember, the scale should not be the focus on determining your success, go by how you look, feel and how your clothes fit.  Weighing in on the scale is way way overrated.

I agree... I ate like crap this past week, didn't lose any weight over a two-week period, but I still lost .5" off almost every part of my body.

The scale isn't the only way to tell what's going on with your body. :)
I would just do it, face reality. :)

The reality of it is the scale doesn't paint the whole picture for ya. ;) So don't depend on it.
I decided in the end to not weigh in.......I'm excited to be back at the gym - and had a good workout. I've got another business trip next week - and I'm going to have to find a way to get workouts in so that I don't miss another week of working out. This trip is much shorter - I'm only out of the office on Thursday and Friday - so I'm hoping to get some good hard workouts in earlier in the week - and really push myself on Wednesday. My measurements haven't changed - even with a week of workouts lost.....I just need to remember that the EVIL scale isn't the be all and end all!  Thanks for all your advice!
