Weighing yourself

Quote  |  Reply
I am one of those people who can weigh myself 10 times a day and just keep getting discouraged.  I know that you should take one weigh in a day at a set time every day, but I've never been able to stick to it.  Anyway this time I am trying to set my goal to not weigh myself for a month.  Is that to long?  I started at the begining of September and am planning on waiting till the last day of the month to weigh myself.  Is that too long to wait?  Has anyone done that, or do you get more discouraged not knowing if your diet is working????  Any suggestions???

Once a week? That's what I do. Scales are the devil.

Hey.  Well i was sorta like that too.  But then i realized it DIDNT HELP to weigh myself all the time due to the amount that women seem to flunctuate weight so easily.  Not to mention if youre working out, muscle building, or just water weight, or where you are in your menstral cycle *as i've only just heard.
So, what i did  was pick one day (mine was a thursday), and every thursday i would weigh myself.  A week seemed to give me a very good idea of my progress.  because the amount i had lost was more than the amount of water weight (or whatever) i might have gained.
Try going once a week.
=)
I weigh myself, all the time, but i find it encouraging, i've found my weight fluctuates much less now than it  used to, and i love seeing the scales when they've gone down even .4 of a lb
I'm like that as well, I can weigh myself every minute if I wanted to!! I tried to do monthly weigh ins but the temptation to weigh myself before the month came up proved too much.

As stated above, I think weekly (rather than monthly) weigh ins are better to give you an idea of progress.

I'm now down to weighing myself once a day, I know I shouldn't but can't help it. Even if I lock my scales away, I'll still get them out.
I'm sure if i locked my scales away i wouldn't weigh myself, i spend my weekends at boys house - not a scale in sight and i'm not bothered, i look forward to monday to if theres a change. But during the week, its anytime im in my bathroom

I weigh myself everyday....but...most of my education is in math and science.  So I understand that since I'm never going to see a large change from day to day and that small changes can be influenced by insignificant factors.  Time of day, intake/excrete cycle, small changes in meal composition, scale error, etc...

So I suppose what best describes my process is that although I weigh daily, I don't count changes < 5lbs.

Just to give an example, someone recently posted an article about a person who allegedly ate in a significant caloric deficit but was still obese.  Then they posted some theory about how weight loss works.  Then they said the person tried it and it worked.  Except.... the 'loss' they reported was .6 lbs.    As soon as I saw that I was laughing. The thing to realize is that every measuring device has error. This error is independent of the scales ability to display digits.

That means even a fancy digital device that says you weigh 121.23 lbs one day and 121.29 lbs the next may not be able to give that last digit accurately.  Again this is assuming you are standing on the scale exactly the way it was intended to be used.  So far I've been able to manipulate, even the seemingly expensive scale at my Gym by up to a pound simply by shifting my weight slightly.

So the moral here is even if your body worked like clockwork you could STILL end up with minor weight variations from day-to-day.

I did this too, only it was the month of August due to a plateau. It was quite refreshing to me not having the stress of the scale everyday.

I weight myself every morning after I use the...bathroom...lol.

Over the weekend, I went up like 3 pounds...but I knew it was water weight because I couldn't have possibly eaten 10,500 cals more over the weekend than I burn!  It was just water weight bc I wasn't drinking that much (I drink around 100 oz a day normally).  I started drinking more water and I lost that weight plus 1 more pound (tyvm) in four days.  My point?  Don't get discouraged if the scale goes up...it could be water...or more muscle...anything really...but NOT FAT!.  If you are following your diet, it would be impossible to gain 1 or 2 pounds of fat overnight because 1 pound of fat is 3500 cals...remember...?

The scale is my vice. I'd weigh myself every hour if I could. It's ridiculous. I'm going to go hide it from myself right now >:o
My doc told me to weigh everyday.  He said it will help tell me if what I'm doing is working or not.  I've become obsessed with it almost but enjoy seeing how I'm doing.  I'm new to this site and this change of eating but continue to be encouraged by anything positive.  <11.5

I have to weigh all day long.  For me, it's about becoming connected to my body and getting in tune.  For too long, I have taken my body for granted and just didn't listen to it and as a result, maxed out at 224...my all time high weight.  I now weigh 161 with a goal weight of 155 and it is imperative that I stay connected and learn how my body fluctuates and how it gains and loses weight.  It's a very fragile thing I have come to learn.  If I become complaciant for just a second, I can gain the weight back.  So, for me, weighing myself all the time is an essential part of my good health.
I'm always so water-swollen in the morning, that I weigh myself in the AM and then again when I get home from work.  I know it's a psycho thing to do, but it actually helps control my eating during the day knowing I have to get on the scale again (as well as drinking enouigh water to flush my system out).  Normally am a 1lb DOWN from the AM after work, but don't recommend this to most people.  I hate the scale at the gym.  It doesn't sit on the floor right, so I think it's off.
I like weighing myself in the morning to monitor progress and the evening is to monitor daily fluctuation. I've found if i fluctuate less than a pound my weight is usually down the next day.

I used to weigh myself daily. Then I would ge discouraged. It was a roller coaster one day I was so happy I lost weight and the next day mad because I gained. I pick one day a week to weigh myself and then I adjust my calories to my success or failure.

The scale can be my friend or enemy;P

I'm maintaining, and still weigh in every day. I feel like I need to hang on to some daily structure so I don't regain weight.  I also still keep a quickie food diary.  I am unconcerned about daily fluctuations... as long as I stick to my calories, I know and uptick isn't real... it will always correct.

I always weigh in first thing in the morning,  because it's when I am going to weigh the least. After that I have had somethign to eat and drink, andnd am dressed... so any subsequent weigh-in is goignto be higher... so why bother. I want to have my lowest weight of the day.

sooo.  I see there's a  manipulater here..........

I thought I was the only one.  lol.  I don't care........if I can get my scale to go down, then I'm calling THAT my weight, darn it.

I have a smaller version of the doctors scale.  I find if I step on slowly and hold some of my weight off, by touching my finger to the wall, and slowly releasing my finger the scale doesn't go up as much as if I bounce onto it.

Does anyone else weigh in the middle of the night if they wake up?  I know when I get my weight down a little more I won't be so fixated.  This is the first time in 3 yrs I'm this low and I just can't believe it and like confirming it.

Just wanted to say 'thanks' for this thread. After a steady weight loss of 6 lbs over 4 weeks, the scale this morning said I'd gained three pounds since Thursday, two days ago!  Even though I know it's water weight or something, it still negatively affected my mood during my workout.  I got on the CC boards to straighten me out, and this thread helped -- thanks!
Great thread!

I too, was beating myself up for going up 3 pounds after 5 weeks of steady weight loss.

The logical part of my brain said not to worry about the weight 'gain', but the emotional part of my brain was ready to cry.

Thanks for bringing me back to logic!!!
I weight myself in the morning and after exercise& a shower
I've so been a victim of mid-night weigh-in...if I wake up to use the bathroom I weigh myself and I usually get really excited to go back to bed and wake up again, because it seems to be those last couple of hours of sleep that shed the pounds for some reason.  When I weigh again it's usually a significant amount less. yay, lol.
