Did my weight cause shin splints? Should I stop running?
Asked by jjen1026 on May 04, 2009 in Fitness

I really want to enjoy running, but I am about 100 pounds overweight.  I used to run 20 years ago but now every time I go for a run, about  10 minutes into it, my shins start to hurt (splints).  I really want to run because people say that it would be the best way for me to drop my pounds.  (I really don’t run fast either, its like a slow jog).  What should I do?

Answer

Being heavy increases the chances of injury to the lower body.  But, you're injured now, and so you need to recover.  If needed, treat your running injury with R.I.C.E. and don't run again until your symptoms have resolved. (Don't believe that running is the only calorie burner!)  Switch to bicycling, swimming or rowing and continue to cross-train when you start to run again.  As a runner, you need to stretch your legs and strengthen your feet and ankles to prevent shin splints.  Wear the correct running shoes for your feet and run on a softer surface when you can.  Use this checklist to prevent injuries and take action before problems start.  Meanwhile, connect with joggers like yourself in the Calorie Count Forums and Groups.
