weight coming off too slow

Quote  |  Reply
I'd like to know if there is anyone else out there who is struggling with losing weight even when obeying a 1200 cal diet and exercising.  I've tried so many different diets and have had the same problem.  I've been on a 1200 cal diet for two months now and have only lost six pounds and those six pounds seem to yo yo up and down.  I've had my thyroid checked, among other blood work, and all tests came back normal.  Has anyone else had this problem of losing too slow and what did you do to get it off faster?

It's possible that you are not eating enough.  1200 calories is just the basic number that people should not go under....however, most people need to actually eat more than that.  Otherwise, their bodies freak out because it thinks you are not getting enough to eat and consequently causes the metabolism to slow way down to try to conserve calories.  This is commonly referred to here as "starvation mode".  It's just a name and doesn't necessarily mean you are starving...but your body thinks you are.

Use the tools on here "under tools" to figure out how much you should actually be eating.

I agree with peaches.  you probably aren't eating enough and are in starvation mode.  Use the profile tools on here to find out what you should be eating to lose weight.
I have had this same problem!!!! Its good to hear I am not the only one. I also have been keeping my calorie intake low. On the days that I exercise i keep it to 1400-1500 calories. I have only lost 5 pounds since the beginning of July!! It is very fusturating. I weigh myself everyday at the same time, and it keeps going up and down. I guess I will just stick with it, hope that I start loosing agian. It does help to know that someone besides me has this problem.

wanna talk slow, i havent lost anything since feb and i have 60 lbs to lose, i'm getting tired of working out 5 days a week and watching every speck of food i eat, my knees are tired, my back is tired and my brain is tired

and to top it all off my doctor doesnt care and says you must have a slow metabolism  wtf
Unfortunately we don't control our bodies, they control us.  When your body wants to lose the weight, it will.  The fact that it's not losing weight means you're not doing what it wants.

Please the body and the body will please the mind.
I've only lost 5 pounds since May, and I cannot even be sure of that much. I just have to tell myself that at least I'm eating more healthily than I used to, whether or not I lose pounds. And I look and feel a little bit better.

Thanks so much everyone for replying.  It does make me feel better to know that there are other people struggling with this and that there is not something seriously wrong with me.  For a  week and a half I've been sick with a cough and have been trying to take it easy.  I haven't exercised, but I'm still on 1200 cals.  I actually lost one pound during this break.  But then today it went back up.  I would like to start my exercising back on Monday.  Do you know if I should try loosing weight without exercising at first, and then add it in?

Two weeks ago, I was working out a lot, (one day I burned 330 cal. on the treadmill, mowed the lawn, jumped on the trampoline, and swam in our pool all in one day).  And I had so much energy (probably because my body was getting used to higher impact exercising).  But then, bam!  I got sick.  Think I might have over done it.  So now, here I am waiting for this chest cold to go away and I have no more energy.  I homeschool my three children, so mostly I'm sitting in our school room at a desk for hours.  Then I do a little picking up the house and cook for supper.  This is what my day looks like right now.

Your body probably got sick because you are not fueling it right.  Use the tools on this site to figure out how much you should eat in order to lose and don't forget to add some more for when you are exercising.  You body needs food.   1200 ain't enough, of course you are going to feel like crap
As it's been said there's a good chance you aren't eating enough.  But are you keeping track of your progress with things other than pounds?  If you are working out a lot you may be gainging muscle while losing the fat, which will make your weight go down slower, but at the same time you might be losing inches off your waist.  Just something you might want to think about :)

Yes, I did lose some inches and that did keep me encouraged some.  But to be honest, I'd like to throw my scale out the window.lol

Well congrats then.  I find losing inches way more rewarding than losing pounds.  I'd say just keep up the good work :)

meh... scales suck anyway. Go ahead and THROW IT!!!  Laughing Then go out and buy yourself a nice measuring tape. They are more accurate, reliable and dependable. Oh and the cost less and last longer. Cool

That's what I say - throw it out!

But if you can't live completely without it ... hide it, or have a housemate hide it, and only weigh yourself once a week.  Daily fluctuations that are generally water-related and have nothing to do with actual fat lost or gained will drive you BUGGY!!!

I've had this same problem, and I watch everything I eat, and do eat a whole lot healthier and cut out alot of sugar or sweets. But nothing is happening, increased and varied my workouts...I just don't get it!
Yeah, that measuring tape is my friend.lol
Does anyone know if I should lose weight first and then add exercising.  It's been three weeks since I worked out and I've been losing faster since then.  I am consuming 1200 cals right now.  I've had a chest cough for a while and didn't want to make myself worse by exercising.  That's when the pounds starting coming off.  Now I am feeling better and am wondering if I should wait to add the ex. or go ahead, but eat more cals.
Anybody know if you gain or maintain when your monthly cycle comes?
