Weight DVD = high weight, low rep for beginner

Quote  |  Reply

Hi everyone, I have been doing Jari Loves strong and lean dvd for 3 weeks now and through everyones advice, I'd like to find a dvd that does heavy weight, low reps-any suggestions? I have seen a few but they seem to be more for advanced. Also, as a side question, my weight loss seems to have stalled these last 3 weeks, I have been dieting (no-life style diet change!) for 3 months now and have lost almost 15 pounds and decided to start using weights (along with cardio that I have been doing from first day) to help loose weight. I do realize now that although I love Jari's dvd-she does light weights with a lot of reps-and this is not the way to go, so any help would be appreciated!

Personally, I think that weights are something to be done without a video - it's so much more personal, because you are doing as much weight as you can, and striving to reach 12 or 10 or however many reps your goal is. If you could always do what they are saying in the video, then you probably aren't working hard enough (although I confess, my image of a weight lifting video is pretty much the same as my image of an aerobics video, but holding 1lb weights, so I could be completely wrong).

There are some books out there that might be more helpful to develop a plan - try New Rules of Lifting for Women (or the New Rules of Lifting, if you are male).  From what I've seen and heard, they both have good plans in them, and show you how to create an ever-changing workout, plus give good insight one what works and what doesn't.

I sometimes catch Cathe Fredrick's workout on FitTV.  She's pretty intense and uses decent weights.  I think she also has "proper" workout videos.
But I agree in general that weights aren't something you "follow along with."
 Congrats on lifting heavy!

Wanttogetfit, if you should find videos that you like please post them so that I can check them out. =)

I have yet to see a DVD with people doing 100lb squats which honestly ladies, isn't that hard to do. Most of you would ramp up to that very quickly.

There are about 50 billion videos out there that cater to the "pink dumbbell" lovers

Not a DVD per se, but I like the Squat Rx Video Playlist on Youtube.

Thanks for replies! spirochete-if you read my post, I want to get AWAY from "pink dumbells" I just prefer doing dvd's - they motivate me, help with timing and easy to follow along with. Sorry if that offends anyone, just hoping someone else out there likes doing weights with dvd's also.

I'm sorry for the confusion! bigmommah had said she really likes using the so called "pink dumbbells" and I wanted to make sure she knew there are tons of videos that are made for that sort of work out since she expressed an interest in videos with weights. I should have been more clear.

For the rest of us, you'll have a hard time finding a video that has a proper weight work out with the sort of weight you should be using. They are all exclusively light weight, high reps set to music and use a lot of small, isolated movements like curls. I'll be on the look out, though!

Thanks so much! the more eyes the better!!
