Weight Fluctuations

Quote  |  Reply

I know your really not suppose to weight yourself everyday but I usually do and it really helps me keep things in check. Although I am a little confused as to weight fluctuations. How much is normal for daily flucuations? Like what is the range a weight can flucate day-to-day and how do I really get a sense of how much I weigh when it goes up and down by 3-4 lbs every day?

it depends how much you weigh... for someone who weighs 90 pounds, 1 pound fluctuations would be normal.  for someone who weighs 300 pounds, 5-10 pound fluctuations could be normal.

of course, this is assuming you're weighing yourself in the morning.  if you weigh yourself at the end of the day, fluctuations can be much more dramatic because of water weight and food in your stomach... to get as accurate as possible, weigh yourself after you go to the bathroom in the morning wearing just underwear and before you eat/drink anything.

Also, don't worry about the fluctuations.  Pay attention to the trendline, it will give you a more true picture, as well as how you look and feel.

The thing is tho  some days when i feel really fat(bloated or whateveR) i weigh myself and i actually weigh less and vice versa .. i feel lke ive got a totally warped body perception :(

I weigh every day.

Only thing i see is my weight going down.

Ive been weighing my self every day for about 2 months and ive only gained 1 time and it was 2 ounces and it was teh day after the hospital made me drinka  ton of crap for a barium.

What ive noticed is about 5 out of 7 days i lose and 2 or 3 days my weight might stay the same.I usualy lose about 4 pounds a week now since i exercise with out worken out i lose about 2.

I weigh every day and believe its better to do so that way because you learn a lot more about whats normal for you.  Everyone has different fluctuations, it depends on your weight, how much sodium you get, if you drink alcohol, what kind of food you eat, and so on.  I'm used to fluctuations of a few pounds either way if i've eaten heavier or more food the day before, had a lot of sodium, or not had enough water.  If i see a few pound gain and i havent changed my diet in the few days before i wonder whats going on and up the excercise a bit though.

Its all a matter of knowing your body though.  I think the best thing about weighing every day though is learning to react to the fluctuations and occasional gains in a healthy way.  Some people can't weigh every day because a small gain will make them want to give up.  Its empowering to be able to see that slight rise in the scale and reasure yourself that you've made progress and will continue to make progress, and just use it as inspiration to try harder.

The key is to do what works for you.  I am a chart junkie.  I weigh myself every day, count every calorie, measure myself once a week, and keep track of what I am able to do in my workouts.  Between all of these, I can really see my progress, even when my weight is frustrating, and I haven't lost my motivation yet (I've been doing this for two months).  Now all I need to do is make a chart for how better I feel...

3-4 pounds is normal, especially if you have a dinky scale like mine - it sometimes varies depending on how you step on it.  I wouldn't worry unless you have a gain of 5 pounds and keep it for a couple of days.  Drinking enough water and having a steady meal plan can keep the fluctuations down.  But it is the trendline that you really should be paying attention to, since it averages the last few days (I forget how many), so small fluctuations are smoothed out.

You could weigh every week, but then any small fluctuation you have for your weekly weigh in would be more frustrating, I would think.
