I don't recommend weighing yourself everyday... you're going to end up getting very obsessive about it and it'll either make or break your day, depending on what the scale tells you (I used to do this, so I know).  I've gone from weighing every day, to a few days a week, down to only weighing in on Wednesday mornings and it works so much better for me.  It allows me to see if I'm in my maintenance range and that I'm on track.  But, I would say that the scale isn't the be all, end all, if you know what I mean... it doesn't tell the WHOLE story.  As long as your clothes are still fitting well, you look good, feel healthy, you should be fine.  You can also double check w/a measuring tape... remember, your weight can go up in you're working out and gaining muscle, but your measurements may go down.  So, don't the the scale get you down.  ;)  Hope that makes sense.

weigh once a week at the same time under the same conditions and in general any fluctuations will be accurate. I weigh every saturday am just after I get out of bed and after I've been to the toilet. Thats the weight I log.

I usually agree with K9 on most things, because she has great ideas, but I definitely disagree about the not weighing in every day.  Once a person is in maintenance mode, many of us (certainly there are many, many people who don't agree) need to weigh each day.  Too many of us who don't, CAN'T control weight gain or weight loss very well if we don't  weigh at least once daily.  Many people have found that weighing-in just after waking up each morning works great.

If you are maintaining by only weighing once a week, then, absolutely, don't weight every day; but if you find that you are slowly gaining weight back, then I would recommend weighing daily.  I have researched online and consulted with a health-wellness doctor friend of mine, who has around 80 to100 clients.  Those sources recommend recording weights daily.  However, since so many people have found that weighing daily frustrates them, I certainly agree 100% that for them, they should not weigh daily.

Your weight fluctuates constantly through out the day. After you eat, pee, poop, drink water, even shower. You know what? Even the moon can effect your weight. True story. If you insist on weighing everyday (it works for some people, not for others), the best time is in the morning, before you eat, drink, shower (your body and hair will retain water), etc, but after you use the potty (if that's something you do every morning). In the morning, you are the lightest and have the least effecting you. It will fluctuate daily, but our bodies are constantly changing and doing things, so you can't expect it to be the same, all the time. Within 1-2 lbs leeway.

To help ensure accuracy, I suggest a digital scale.

I absolutely agree with xwadea.  I weigh several times a day (because I enjoy doing it, regardless of the friendly sarcasm I must endure! LOL--and I feel it gives me an honest indicator of what my average weight really is, JMOPO); I have noticed that my weight fluctuates constantly.

  • if I weigh soon after eating,
  • soon after exercising,
  • soon after waking up from a nap,
  • soon after taking a hot bath,
  • etc, etc.

Generally, my weight fluctuates around 2 pounds each day from 169 or so to 171 or so each day when I analyze all my daily weigh-ins.

Yep. Are you lighter after exercising? Supposedly it's because you lose retained water and bloating goes down.

When I weigh-in after a walk or spin on the stationary bike, I usually lose between 1/2 and 1 and 1/2 pounds, depending on how fast I walked or spun, how hot it was, and how long I did the activiity.  If I weigh soon after eating one of my bigger meals, I might "gain" the same amount.

Oh, by the way.. weigh nude! also helps accuracy.

Yes, I even take off my glasses and don't hold my pen that I use to record my weight!  LOL  Nude is the way to go--well, in weighing anyway!

I can't see that far without my glasses. haha

Well, I weighed-in at 169 or so earlier this morning and just now weighed 172 or so, after eating a big salad and drinking a pot of coffee.  Now, I shall head off to take a brisk walk, hoping the 3 pounds are mainly water weight!  LOL

90 minute brisk walk and 25 minutes of abs and a bit of Reading Room time and Walla...

I weigh 168.8

I'm one of those who weighs several times a day.  Whenever I feel like it, really.  I know that my weight fluctuates, and that's fine - and I'm learning what makes it fluctuate and how much, which means I feel more comfortable with the number changes and am more aware of what I probably actually weigh. I can gain 2 or 3 - sometimes even 4 - lbs throughout the day, and still have lost weight the next morning (which is my official weigh in time).  Strangely, I'm at my lowest weight after 8am, which is an hour after I get up and right before breakfast.

I'm a control freak, though, so this probably isn't the best idea for everyone.  If it really bothers you to see weight fluctuations, then don't weigh daily.  Once a week is fine if it works for you.

corellia40:  Thanks for sharing.  I think there are quite a few others like us who are often afraid to admit that we do weigh several times a day, but don't get freaked out if our weight fluctuates several times daily.  You offer good advice for those who don't want to weigh daily.

i just PIGGGGEED out tonight ): now i regret it and i feel like i never wanna weigh again. ha.

ashley_marie:  I should join you in not wanting to ever weigh again.  I am over my high end of my weight window--just barely, but I am over.  Wahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

I am a chronic weigher. There, I've said it. I weigh maybe 3-4 times a DAY too. I enjoy it- I feel reassured that my daily fluctuation of up to 6lbs (yes, you read that right!) is almost always gone the next morning. I'm learning what foods bump up my weight (usually meals with a high-veg content & soups) and what times of the month I can expect a gain that'll last a few days, without losing the plot & panicking that I'm going to re-gain all my lost weight!!

If daily weigh-ins dictate your mood for the day though- I'd recommend you stick to weekly ones?

I'm another one who weighs daily, and I chart the daily weights in the weight log on this site.

Each to their own, but I like to keep on top of things with my weight.  I wouldn't want to wait a week and then see an increase.
