weight gain with annoying digestion issues
since you guys all seem brilliant at offering meal plan suggestions I thought I'd ask![]()
I'm recovering from purging-type anorexia, and since b/ping was such a massive issue for me I've been left with the most irritating digestive system in the world! When I started refeeding food wouldn't leave my stomach for up to eight/ten hours and I was in constant pain...not good. I started off cutting down on bulk and fibre to an insane degree, as this is supposed to be good for people with delayed gastric emptying. I was eating white bread, refined cereals and very little fruit & veg for a long time. started to reintroduce some higher fibre foods a couple of months back, but now I'm making a renewed effort to gain and obviously with the higher intake my stomach is giving me problems again.
basically, has anyone got suggestions for low-fibre, low-bulk but high calorie foods which are actually healthy? I am having trouble fitting extra food in but I don't want to scare the life out of myself by eating total junk while gaining (a small percentage of junk is fine tho :P). I don't need to get very very high in cals as I've never been hypermetabolic despite staying on 3000cals for a month in IP (I gained like 3/3.5lbs a week consistently on that lol). anyway my dietitian wants me on 2000 but I am hoping to keep on shoving a few hundred more in there just to make sure I get the amount of weight I want on by October. IF my stomach will co-operate though dammit. it's not just an 'uncomfortable' thing, tbh I am already in the habit of lying down for an hour after meals cause I'm in pain, this I can deal with but I need to make sure it doesn't get any worse with an increase in my diet, which is what's been happening recently.
Low fiber , low bulk foods would prbably consist of:
- Almonds
- Peanut Butter
- Walnuts
- Cashews
- Any type of beans[lentils, pinto beans etc..]
- Granola
- Raisins
- Brown Rice
- Whole Wheat bread
- Whole wheat pasta
- Wheat germ
- Yogurt
^^ you sure you mean LOW fibre with the beans, wholegrains etc?
I can't eat beans too often which really irritates me cause I love them...I remember once a few weeks back I had like 300g of baked beans on two slices of wholemeal toast...OUCH. not good. I thought that meal would never leave my stomach.
have you ever wondered about having a endoscopy? i had exactly the same symtoms as you so i had onr and they found i had an hiatus hernia, i have been taking medication which has really helped. i always found sloppy food was better. i know i know sounds disgusting but things like mashed potatoe even add carrot and swede , or cottage pie , i also found oatmeal better than cereal . peppermint tea is also good for abdomonal trouble hope that helps h x
I commend you for pushing on to gain despite these troubles! It's inspiring :)
Nut butters(almond, peanut, cashew, etc), avocado, ice cream, ensure/boost drinks, cook meat/tofu in extra oil, add extra butter to bread.

yea I was supposed to be referred for an endoscopy but people's wires got crossed and the referral never materialised, silly NHS paperwork et al! I didn't push it at the time cause I wasn't eating enough to make it an issue, but if it worsens I may try again. lol I know what you mean about mashed up food. unfortunately I hate mashed potatoes, but mashed veg works well for me rather than 'harder' veg. am planning on switching to oatmeal as soon as it gets cool enough...I can't seem to eat it in this heat!
ecwk - thanks, I love most of those foods (lol well except supplements, but I will resort to them if necessary!)
