weight gain, and hair loss?!

Quote  |  Reply

i would say i was not fully anorexic but i had a terrible diet in march and april this yyear and probaly had 800 calories most days though some i had more.i was in the mind frame of anorexia though.

this last month i have experienced hair shedding which i have reserached and concluded it is due to telogen effluvium, fits exactly, and is exactly 3 months after it started from my diet.

i am notw mantaining a good healthy weight and i would never ever restrict like tha again, i just wanted to know if any others have experienced this latent shedding and if so how long did it last?

i have naturally thick hair but it is thinning, well to me i see it atleast.

i eat ateast 2000 calories a day, and am mantaining at 120 -125.

have light activity and take vitamin b complex supplements.

please help, its very disheartening to be eating so well and then experience hair loss im only a 19 year old girl!

this happened to me too. i cant explain it but if you get answers, let me know!

Hair usually takes a while (I forget how long) to reflect your eating habits, so that might explain why even though you're eating better now, you're losing hair.

I had gastric bypass surgery las October, and they actually warned us about the hairloss. It does stop after a couple of months as long as you are eating right and will eventually come back, at least for the most part.

And by the way, don't think I don't need to be on here, I am now at the point (post surgery) where I have to start counting calories again, it's amazing how your body will adjust to anything, even being able to take in less food at a time.

I completely feel you right now. My hair falls out thanks to my anemia, and I'm only 18. I was checking my hair yesterday because I want to dye it an even brown while doing as little damage as possible, and realised my hairline is receding. You can see my scalp behind downy little hairs where it's growing back. Urgh.

Have you spoken with a doctor at all about being tested for a deficiency? I'm eating a balanced diet of upwards of 3000 calories and my hair still falls out, so it may be worth you time to get checked.

It happened to me too.  I started cc back in mid-march and in June I started to notice hair loss - lots of it - and I'm still losing it.  I didn't even restrict my calories as much as you - I was averaging about 1650 cal's per day but even that was a shock to my system.  I've also lost hair after my children were born and that lasted about 1-2 months so I'm hoping this ends soon, before I'm totally bald!  Actually, so far, I'm probably the only one who's noticed, well, and my husband cuz my hair is everywhere.  Oh well.  I now take a multi-vitamin specifically for hair, skin, and nails though I haven't noticed any significant change with it.  Good luck to you.

If you don't already, you should try taking slow iron for your anemia lalabanana.  I used to be anemic and although I didn't experience hair loss I was always really fatigued and would bruise from anything more than a light touch! The slow iron really helped with my symptoms and I am now happily anemia-free. Cool

Naurugirl: I take ferrous sulphate tablets every day, twice a day. I also make sure I eat lots of iron-rich foods (with vitamin c alongside where I can - the FS gets taken with a vit-c jelly too!). My red blood cell count was -very- low when I was first checked at the start of recovery, in the low end of the 60's. It went up to 94 over the space of a few weeks, but, well. That's still quite low, apparently, but then I have no one else to blame but myself for causing that. <<;
