How much weight should I gain?
Asked by anonymous on Sep 14, 2009 in Family & Pregnancy

I am 4'9" and 80 pounds.  I feel very skinny and everyone is always telling me that I am, and so how can I gain weight as quickly as possible?  How much should I gain and how should I do it?

Answer

You do not have to gain weight.  For your gender (female) and age (13 years and 3 months), your current Body Mass Index (BMI) is 17.3, which places you in the healthy weight range when plotted on the CDC BMI-for-age growth charts.  Your doctor has been using a growth chart to plot your growth pattern since birth.  Ask your doctor to interpret your growth chart for you.  In terms of diet, you just need to eat a balanced diet of wholesome food in response to your appetite.  Kids also need at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day.
