Weight gain as soon as I upped my calories...

Quote  |  Reply

Well, the title really says it all...basically I finally reached my goal of 135 pounds, and have been slowly incresing my calories ot maintenance (which for me is around 1900).  It's been less than a week, and the most I've had is 1600 a day...and I've gained three pounds!

Will this gain continue, or is it just temporary?  I'm not sure if I should go back to what I was eating before, or continue to up my calories...

Weight fluctuates naturally. It's normal. There are a lot of different factors at play when it comes to your weight at any given time. Water retention, food, sleep, et cetera can all affect your weight.

Since it's been less than a week, I'd say ditch the scale for at least another full week of an upped intake and then see from there.

how much were you eating before? have you changed your exercise regimen??

If you are doing the same amount of exercise as before on your lower calorie amount and have now reached your goal and are following the new calorie advice correctly then I suspect that the 3 pounds will drop off again. Are you weighing yourself at the same time each day?

If (and I don't know if this is your situation) you had been undereating for a long time, and were in starvation mode, then you would put on weight when your diet was corrected.

I went through this (see weight chart in my profile).  I was eating too little and my weight loss stalled.  I was put on a 2000 calorie diet by a nutritionist, gained back 8 pounds, leveled off, and began losing again after cutting back calories.  I can now lose by eating more than I was to start with.  It's just a correction but it did take more than 6 months before I was losing again.

As I said, I dont know if this explanation fits your situation, but thought I'd offer it anyway.

Thanks for all the great advice, guys!

It's weird...I was excercising the same as I had been on lower calories, and actually eating healthier foods.  I just kept getting...heavier.

I weighed myself today, and I was at the weight I was trying to maintain, so I think it had more to do with the times I was weighing myself (in my mind, I should be lighter right after working out, in reality...apparently not haha)

IF YOU STARVED YOURSELF TO THAT GOAL WEIGHT, THEN IT WILL COME BACK, WITH FRIENDS- AKA EXTRA POUNDS. IF YOU DID IT STEADILY THEN THE WEIGHT SHOULD LEVEL OFF OVER A FEW WEEKS. DONT WORRY ITS YOUR BODY GETTING YOUR METABOLISM BACK TO NORMAL. DONT CUT BACK ANY CALORIES, WAIT 3-4 WEEKS, THEN YOU CAN LOSE THE WEIGHT AGAIN, IT WIL BE EASIER THAN BEFORE.TRUST.

3 pounds aint a lot...flucuation definitely...mine does too a lot, especially since i always underate for a long time...a week ago i was 117, now 121. go figure. increasing the food really does make it go up, but that doesnt mean it will be that way forever.

relax.. give your body some time to adjust.
