weight gainer shakes/drinks?

Quote  |  Reply

Hello, I am new, just joined a few days ago so I can keep track of what I am eating and burning.  I thought I was better off than I am... but learning that I burn about 1700 calories a day and only eat about 1100 I scared myself.

I am 29 years old, 5 feet tall, 85 pounds, and I have no health problems.  I am just tired of having people point out how thin I am, being told I look like I am 17, and having to shop in the kids section.  My little sister is bigger than me!

It was suggested to me that I try drinking some sort of weight gainer with my meals.  But I have no idea what I am looking for or what tastes good.

So this is where I need your advice.  Where should I look, what should I buy?  What have you tried and like and disliked.

Thank you SO much for your help!  I am so glad I found a place that deals with weight gain not just weight loss.

ensure makes a great healthy drink...I like the plus homemade vanilla, it's high in calories and I think it tastes pretty good.

hi-

i really like Ensure-butter pecan flavor, add a packet of sugar, ice, and blend, its delicious!  also, add peanut butter and stuff like that to everything.

Theres a few, not to mention Boost, ensure plus, or just making your own shakes/smoothies. Add things that are calorie dense like nut butters, syrups, oil or eggs (be careful with those though), sugar, honey, nuts, dried fruit, juice, whole milk, yogurt, higher calorie fruits like bananas or mangos, full-fat ice cream or frozen yogurt, dry pudding mixes, oatmeal, wheat germ, bran, flax seed, flax oil, evaporated milk, condensed milk, half and half, canation instant breakfast, coconut, chocolate chips/candy peices, etc., heavy whipping cream, and really and combo of those work..

Hope that helps!

I have to take one Boost regular and one Boost plus as part of my weight gain plan. They make me feel like throwing up! They're so nasty to me, like glue! I recommend what jsharshar said about making your own smoothies. You can make it super calorie dense, and taste better too! Avocados are really good to add to, and you can't even taste them if you've got some fruit in it too.

Thank you all so much for your help!

My sister has Crohn's Disease so needs lots of calories, and she has these drinks called Scandishakes, which are REALLY high cal and small to have!

Try them :)

I myself have banana build up drinks cause they are nice too.

Have you considered making your own shakes?  Here are some high-cal recipes:

Chocolate Peanut butter milkshake

  • 1 cup haagen-dazs chocolate ice cream (540 calories)
  • 1 cup whole milk (150)
  • 2 TB peanut butter (190)
  • 1 scoop chocolate protein powder (100)
Blend all ingredients in a blender.  980 calories
Banana Milkshake
  • 1 large banana (100 calories)
  • 1 cup haagen-dazs vanilla ice cream (540)
  • 1 cup whole milk (150)
  • 1 scoop vanilla protein powder (120)
Blend all ingredients in blender.  910 calories
Chocolate Milkshake
  • Chocolate flavored Ensure or Boost Plus (350 calories)
  • 1 cup haagen-dazs chocolate ice cream (540)
  • 1 scoop chocolate protein powder (120)
Blend all ingredients.  1,010 calories
Chocolate Peanut Butter Shake
  • 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 3 TB peanut butter (creamy)
  • 3 TB chocolate syrup
  • 1.5 cups chocolate ice cream
Blend ingredients in blender.  1,070 calories

Woah, swimfan those shakes look amazing! I'm going to have to try them. =)

when i was in full blown weight-restoration, i had a ensure plus with every meal.  i second the butter pecan flavor - definitely my favorite.  vanilla would be my second choice.

Do not replace meals with supplements. Eat a menu of at least 2500 calories and then if you want to have shakes on top of that please, go ahead. But do not replace food with them. It teaches you nothing about normalised eating.

First I think you need to lay off the excercise. If you are eating only 1100 a day I would start by increasing food too if you can. I mean Ensure is better then nothing for sure as one can not live off air but also I think you need to get to a normal meal plan and then for calories you can't meet add supplements. I had to do Ensure in the hospital and they never sat well with me so I then was allowed to add the extra calories in food. I am not against supplements because for some it is the only way to stay alive but I do feel that part of recovery is learning to fuel and nurish with real food. So is there a way you can do both possibly if that would help? Have balance meals and snacks and then if needed supplements to meet all needs
