I have a huge bottle of Pro Performance Weight Gainer 1850 and was wondering if I can use that as my high cal source in lieu of additional foods in my strength training and bulking-up program.
I know it can't replace a good diet, but can I continue to eat a normal (very slight calorie surplus) diet, and then use that as my muscle gaining food?
i suggest eating foods and dumping that weight gainer as it is filled with junk in my opinion. get all of your calories from foods and supplement with a protein shake instead. eat lots of lean meats and whole wheat and whole grain foods. lots of cottage cheese, veggies. go out and get lots of cans of tuna. oats, eggs, natural pb. it's not hard to get the calories and protein you need from foods.
Normally I'd recommend you stick with food though. Gainers are sort of the junk food of protein supplements - okay for the occacional treat but nothing to base your diet on :)
Thanks fellas. I think I'll nix the mix then.
I think it also depends on how much you need to eat 3-4000 no problem with food but if your needs are 6-7000 + calories then it can get hard to eat that much and costly too. It does not appear that applies to you but I would use it on days that you are not going to eat enough or extra active so you need even more calories than what you can take in that day. Definitely not a replacement but it can be a helpful tool along the way.
Well, I kind of wanted it for days when I do work out really hard or more importantly, when I know I am going to be in calorie deficit. I'm looking at lower fat, lower sugar bars and drinks now instead of the mixes.
And yes, the cost of eating 5k cal per day, everyday, is prohibitive.
I would look at your food sources that are very nutrition dense. Nuts are a great example of this: Almond - 546 calories, 20 g protein and 40 g of mono and polyfats (the good ones), Peanuts - 854 calories, 35 g of protein and 59 g of the good fats. These were all for one cup of those, by no means hard to eat, expensive or need of preparation. I think supplements are a great tool just look around and see what each one has to offer for its calories it is giving you.
Hmmm... true; I hadn't really thought of nuts until you mentioned it. Peanuts are damn high, I know.
Good tip, thanks.
