Weight Gainers: What did YOU eat today?

I am copying the many times copied thread, "What did you eat today?" in hopes of helping some of those who are just starting to gain and have no clue what to eat. I know that when I began weight recovery, I was eating tons of low-cal foods just because that's what I was used to. I learned the hard way that dense foods are essential to weight gain when you have high caloric requirements (at one point I needed 4500 cal to maintain my weight on BEDREST). Perhaps newbies can get some ideas if we post our weight gain meal plans! Even if you're not gaining anymore, grab an old one and post it!:]
Please note that every body is different and some will need more or less calories than others to gain. This thread is just so that you can get an idea of what you need.
Oh, and yes, I'm breaking the "no calories, no portions" rule, since it is pretty helpful in this case. If you want to post cals/portions you can. I just ask that you don't post if you're not eating enough, though as this is a weight gain thread, I would hope none of you are undereating.;]
I'll start....
Breakfast (875 cal)*

  • 1/2 cup oatmeal (150) cooked with
  • 1 cup evaporated whole milk (300)
  • 1 mashed banana (100)
  • 2 tbsp peanut butter (200)
  • 1 tbsp ground flaxseed and cinnamon to taste (50)
  • 1 hard-boiled egg (75 cal)

Morning Snack (300 cal)*

  • 1/4 cup mixed nuts (200)
  • 1/4 cup dried apricots (100)

Lunch (660 cal)*

  • 1/4 cup rice cooked in 1 cup chicken stock (300) and
  • 1/2 cup canned or cooked chickpeas (145) and
  • 1/3 cup shredded cheese (150) and
  • 1/4 cup each onion, peppers, and tomato (30) cooked with
  • 1 tbsp olive oil and curry powder to taste (120)

Afternoon snack (390 cal)*

  • 1 serving baby carrots (35)
  • 1/4 cup hummus (155)
  • 1/4 cup mixed nuts (200)

hi guys, ill be back later, but this is the link to the restaurant that i think i am going to tomm at like 2pmish.  so like "Porridge", i don't know, so much butter and stuff could be added to it.  now iknow im being nuts but, ill be even more nuts if the food i eat is too out of my safe zone and i dont want to end up restricting later, ya know?

ok, thanks

http://www.sarabethscps.com/menu_brunch_lunch .html

wow that menu reminds me of being in new york :)

it all sounds great....you could have anything....theres nothing that jumps out that might be triggering!!

they wouldnt add butter to porridge...itll be a decent bowl made with normal milk...300 max + whatever you have with

if it was me id go for buttermilk pancakes with strawberries...or the lemon and ricotta

an omelette is likely to be 3 eggs...if you include the butter its cooked in thatd prob be 300..plus whatever you have in it...if youre really struggling you could ask for it without cheese

the best thing to do is go, relax, enjoy yourself and have what you want but i know thats far easier said than done :/

hope this helped a bit!

CHARLIE-thanks for checking and replying!  i dont know, when my father makes oatmeal he adds butter, if he does, i bet restaurants add SOMETHING to make it taste better than just normal.  and eggs, so i eat whole eggs and all, im not concerned about whites only or anything, but the oil, if you look up calories counts for restaurant and eggs, or pancaakes, have you heard of IHOP, the international house of pancakes, eggs are like 1200 cals!

now i know im being nuts, i just dont want to order the salald, even the seafood one which i love, bc i want to be more "normal" and have something else.  hmm, i dont know, i hate eating out, and my dad asked to eat out tonight but i said no, and, lol, someone at work said to me today, "wow, you're eating again? evertime i see you you're eating", i was just like yea, thats what my father says bc he said it to me a few days ago.  its just getting kind of tough bc im doing like no cardio now and eating more than i have in like 3 years!

sorry to vent..

hey no need to apologise everyone needs a vent sometimes

i know how it is though....2 girls in one of my classes the other day were whispering but werent doing a very good job...basically saying how i was gaining weight and it wasnt suprising seeing as im always eating they dont even know me...i hate it when people judge you on appearence!

anyway.... i have heard of IHOP..ive actually been there haha but trust me theres a major difference in the food you get at a 'fast food/diner' kinda joint compared to what youll get here....at IHOP i bet the chefs dont need many qualifications because its not their own menu their all cooking the same hing in every IHOP in the US but as this place the chef probably had input into the menu will be more trained and will know that ading alot of oil etc. actually ruins food....its hard to understand but when you get your food whatever it may be youll be able to tell....it wont be really greasy!!
oops double post!

hi charlie, thanks for your reply!  im thinking maybe eggs and ill ask that it not be cooked in oil or butter?  and then an english muffin w it, wish they had fruit.  or maybe if they have, ill get some sort of meat sandwich, that would be a huge step for me.  i looked up eggs in the calorie counter and restaurants, not just fast food, have 2 eggs as like 250, now im not even saying thats a lot, its just that 2 eggs should be more like 150.  so annoying, im nuts, and the clothes im wearing right now feel tight!  yuck!

oh, and i hate ppl talking about you right in front of you, who cares what they said!  they have nothing better to talk about than other people that they don't even know!

(Doof, wrong thread. xD)

hi everyone.  i had my graduateion today.  it was nice but really long.  afterwards my parents and i couldnt find eachother, when we finally did it was hot, we were hungry, and we all got cranky and irratible fighting w eachother.  we didnt go to the preselected restaurant and ended up at a diner after fighting a lot.  i got a ham sandwich which i havent done in years, i cant remember not ordering a salad in a restaurant and the sandwich was huge.  so i opened 1/2 of it and ate it like a open sandwich and didnt have the other side.  i offered it to my father and he said, "no, you have to eat it".  it really upset me and basically ruined the rest of the time.  i asked why he said that and my mother said to me that i shouldnt take things so literally.  ofcourse, she orders a plain baked potato and eats only half of it!  that makes it soooo very hard for me to eat, i dont know why she does that.  thats also after she didnt eat breakfast, i did, and it makes things so hard for me!  ugh

ok, have a great day everyone!

agruskin: My mum doesn't eat breakfast either, besides a cup of milk. but, she eats quite a bit the rest of the day.
I have a friend who hardly ever eats. and has OCDs and excercises ALOT (quite compulsively),  and she was one of the factors I THINK in triggering my ED.
And so now, its hard if we go out to eat, or i go to her house or parties to eat .. because i always notice how little she is eating.. Although it is more than she did before. (She used to eat NOTHING at all just about, before i developed my ED that is). And because i also know that she excercises a lot as well, it feels like, if i don't do what she does, i cant have a nicebody etc.etc. you know?

All we can do, is ignore others and focus on doing what's best for ourselves. Often I am jealous of my friend - she has such strong will power and through much workingout etc. she is quite toned/nice body. BUT. I know, I do not want to become like her. I don't think she is healthy, although she may appear so on the surface. She almost doesn't get her periods at all (and she was an early 'starter' before), she bruises easily, she often gets gastroenteritis (in fact she has it right now and had to be rushed to emergency hospital a few days ago), she has bad blood circulation/gets cold easily.

ANYWAY.

Breakfast: Oats made with soy milk, almonds, pear slices, vanilla yoghurt, cinnamon. Slice of wholegrain toast.

Snack: Chocolate up and go, granny smith apple, mandarin, wholegrain crispbreads

Lunch: 3 slices soy and linseed wholegrain bread, egg and chilli tuna omelette fried with extra virgin olive oil, lettuce, tomato, cucumber. One tiny roll of korean vegetable sushi and one big korean riceball sushi (not sure what its called... ) from friend.

Snack: Skim milk with coffee, weetbix, almonds, sultanas, orange

Dinner: Rice, pork and soya beans cooked in chinese BBQ broth/sauce in hotpot, stirfried cauliflower. Thick sweet and sour soup.

Snack: Chocolate sustagen, weetbix, fuji apple

Didn't estimate today. But I feel like I've eaten a lot/more than normal overall. Especially at lunchtime. Had the worst heart burn afterwards !! X_X. Well. I don't know if it was heart burn... couldn't really describe the pain.. so going with what my friends said =|.

=)

agruskin im so sorry to hear your day didnt go as well as you hoped especially as it was graduation :( but well done with the sandwich anyway...eating all but half the bread is a big step especially when were talking diner sized portions! i hope youre not put off pushing yourself to try and eat out more :) its really beneficial in terms of beating the ED

also, my sister sounds like your mum so i can relate and understand how hard it is, she eats only salad and fruit, literally, but i think what saykyoku said about focusing on your own health, not others', is the best thing :D

haha yyonah youre a star i think i may take you up on that idea ;)

heres what i had yesterday:

breakfast: frosties with an apple and glass of milk

snack: oatmeal with brown sugar and frozen berries and a banana flavour hot chocolate

lunch: 6 cheesy oatcakes with 4 falafel and tzatziki

snack: rhubarb and custard milkshake (this was sooo gurd :P) and 25g teddy grahams

dinner: mozerella and tomato torteloni with chopped tomatoes, corgettes and feta cheese

snack: raspberry and banana milkshake and golden syrup oatmeal

hi everyone-thank you for your kind and understanding words.  focusing on myself and my own health is what i know i need to do.  ofcourse after my father made the comment about having to eat, he then asked what was for dinner and if we were going out-hes overweight, my parents ordered in chinese food and my mother understood i wasnt having any but ofcourse my father had to make a big deal of why i wasnt.  i dont ussually make it my meal, ill take like 1 piece of chicken and random bites here and there, but then make something else for myself.  i just feel really paranoid when i eat with them, as if they're counting how much i eat, or don't eat.

YYONAH-how are you progressing?  you seem to be doing so well, mentally, congratulations!  your dinner as always sounds delicious!  i want recipes! lol

SAYKYOKU-yea, my mother eats in a secret or something bc she is not underweight at all.  it makes it so difficult to eat infront of her.  regarding excercising- its good to be healthy and active i think but then i need to think, if i start an intense workout routine and become nuts about it, will it be something that i will really be able to maintain the rest of my life?  not likely, i might as well do whats good 4 me in the long run.  i dont think we need to be triatheletes in order to be healthy.  its sometimes hard for me to remember but yea.

CHARLIE-hi, thanks so much for everything!  i wish i was able to enjoy my accomplishment a bit more, oh well.  waht are frosties and a corgette-is that an eggplant?  like a purple vegetable? lol

also, tomm i weigh myself for my once weekly check, itll be my first time since ive rededicated myself to recovering so im scared of what ill see!

fri plan-

BFAST-1/2 c. all bran, 3/4c. special K, milk, dried fruit and nuts

LUNCH-english muffin, boca burger+toppings, fage yogurt

GYM-weight routine

SNACK-vitamuffin+fruit, maybe some PB and dried fruit

DINNER-meatballs and tomato sauce, baked potato, steamed eggplant, brussel sprouts, salad, roll

SNACK-yogurt+apple

Hey all! I'm back! Looks like everyone's doing great. I have basically chained myself to my desk for the last few days revising for my A levels (exams to get into university for non-UK folk). But...just finished them all today!! Soooo, I'm free for the summer! Whoopeeeee! Anyway, I'm not sure how eating has gone really, i think the stress of exams may have caused me to slip a little and as I was away at school (boarding) I had to skip a couple of Ensure. I'm thinking I should really stop relying on them so much, it kind of seems like I'm using them to make up calories for the day to maintain rather than extra to gain....will get posting again to get back on track though. Hugs all around.

I knew today wasn't going to be a good one because it's was the last day of my final exams and I have to have Starbucks (it's tradition), I had lunch plans with my friends, and every friday my mom and I do a special dinner and she decided that she wanted to go out to Ihop. =/ So here we go...

Breakfast: Grande Light Coffee Frappuccino, medium banana

Snack: Plum

Lunch: Panera Bacon Turkey Bravo sandwich on Wheat without the sauce, a medum apple, half of the deli pickle, and an iced green tea

Dinner: 3 buttermilk pancakes with cinnamon apple compote, 2 scrambled eggs, and a fresh fruit dish.

And to top it all off, my mom and sister want to go out for ice cream later. I know I need to gain weight, but this is definitely not how I wanted to do it.

hi, sorry to be such a downer, it is just really difficult living at home.  had a huge fight at dinner w my parents, started crying.  my father started yelling at me that i dont eat bc i was taking the eggplant and not something else.  he was taking the spaghetti, what was i going to do, grab it out of his hand?  the eggplant was nearest to me.  i started crying and cursing-we dont do that in my family, i was so mad, espcially now that im trying again to really get better and i weight myself tomm for the 1st time and im slightly constipated so i just feel bloated a nd blah.  i was going to have everything else, and i ended up sitting there and just basically shoveling it all down my throat miserably.  what a waste.

breakfast: rolled oats made with rice milk, melted peanut butter on top, vanilla pomegrante yogurt with kashi honey almond flax cereal

snack: 3 mini freezies, 1 kiwi, cup of cherries, vanilla shreddies
