Weight Gainers: What did YOU eat today?


I am copying the many times copied thread, "What did you eat today?" in hopes of helping some of those who are just starting to gain and have no clue what to eat. I know that when I began weight recovery, I was eating tons of low-cal foods just because that's what I was used to. I learned the hard way that dense foods are essential to weight gain when you have high caloric requirements (at one point I needed 4500 cal to maintain my weight on BEDREST). Perhaps newbies can get some ideas if we post our weight gain meal plans! Even if you're not gaining anymore, grab an old one and post it!:]
Please note that every body is different and some will need more or less calories than others to gain. This thread is just so that you can get an idea of what you need.
Oh, and yes, I'm breaking the "no calories, no portions" rule, since it is pretty helpful in this case. If you want to post cals/portions you can. I just ask that you don't post if you're not eating enough, though as this is a weight gain thread, I would hope none of you are undereating.;]
I'll start....
Breakfast (875 cal)*

  • 1/2 cup oatmeal (150) cooked with
  • 1 cup evaporated whole milk (300)
  • 1 mashed banana (100)
  • 2 tbsp peanut butter (200)
  • 1 tbsp ground flaxseed and cinnamon to taste (50) 
  • 1 hard-boiled egg (75 cal)

Morning Snack (300 cal)*

  • 1/4 cup mixed nuts (200)
  • 1/4 cup dried apricots (100)

Lunch (660 cal)*

  • 1/4 cup rice cooked in 1 cup chicken stock (300) and
  • 1/2 cup canned or cooked chickpeas (145) and
  • 1/3 cup shredded cheese (150) and
  • 1/4 cup each onion, peppers, and tomato (30) cooked with
  • 1 tbsp olive oil and curry powder to taste (120)

Afternoon snack (390 cal)*

  • 1 serving baby carrots (35)
  • 1/4 cup hummus (155)
  • 1/4 cup mixed nuts (200)

Dinner (875 cal)*

Evening snack (480)*

  • 1 cup plain whole milk yogurt (180)
  • 1/2 cup homemade granola (300)

About 3600 calories :]

aqua-  glad ballet was fun... fall i namerica sounds much better than other here; we get rain, rain, cold and more rain!!!! however today it was quite a nice day! thanks for lookin that up!! Going to a Yale and Columbia (i think it those two!!) tlk tomoz in the evening... oo those sport scholarships sound cool but i bet they are so competitive!

D= wholewheat pasta, tomatoes and ****..... fat free yogurt +berries + 1/2 cup all bran and fruseli bar

S= 1/2 cup all bran and 1/2 cup special k w 100ml skimmed milk and few raspberries

Total i think is just 2700 cals!! so got back there, however  hope that is enough to compensate for the sport-dunno-

LULU-im glad i got to you! lol this whole recovery is a lot of work and you dont want to make it tougher by trying and eating all this food, only to be burning it all off, and more, and then not gaining and doing it all for nothing, how much more time +life do you want to waste? gl tomm!

hey guys! 

i'm back from my campaigning, wasnt overly exciting but we were doing something good. We split up and walked around door to door talking to people and handing out fliers. Actually most people weren't home. It turns out we were done by like 1:30 so I was excited to try and come home in time to eat lunch with my mom but everyone decided to go to whataburger. So i just had my snacks then came home and had lunch at 230. I'm still getting in all my snacks tho! Everyone is so motivated today! it's really helping me! but I do feel kind of weird because i don't do nearly as much exercise as some of you yet am trying to eat a lot more. It's making me wonder if i'm eating too much, but that's just ED and i'm not listening. Today so far:

s?- woke up at like 6 and couldnt sleep so had a big bowl of uncooked oats with honey and soymilk. Tried to sleep again but really just layed there. 

b- omellette! i needed something good, 2 whole eggs, with a bit of soymilk, onions and red pepper and oo in the pan, apple, yogurt. Tea with about 1/2 cup of soymilk. 

s- banana, some of pb and j

l- opened up the pb and j when I got home and spread extra pb and then toasted it all in the oven, white rice and red pepper, small salad with oo and vinegar. carrot juice

snack and party foods to come. 

lala- yes i need to get it in my head that I should eat what I feel like now or what I feel like is normal because then how will i switch it for maintenance? I'm glad to hear 70% carbs is ok! I try not to log and hardly ever do anymore, but just got really stressed that maybe i was under for yesterday and HAD to know for sure. that was stupid. 

slr- great job eating party food! yeah i hate seeing girls that young already concerned about their weight, even many of you on here, it makes me sad that you've had to deal with all of this, you're still young and growing and shouldn't even know what a calorie is. I know I couldn't ahve cared less at your age, my friends and I loved to pig out! 

afonoleri- wow you're active!! eek, makes me a bit nervous lol really make sure you're eating enough, as i've said, athletes have to eat outrageous amounts of food to maintain their weight and perform their best. I'd even say in the 4000's for you. So keep working at it! 

charlie- thanks for the love! I need to accept that being able to eat the foods i like in the future is going to involve compromise for now. I do always smother my veggies in oil, and i should incorporate more grains. i'm not the biggest fan of sandwiches though. I also have accepted for the most part that many things make my stomach hurt and I no longer let it keep me from eating, it just makes me uncomfortable, but I can live through it. I knew the beans would cause some trouble but I also wanted to kick out that voice telling me 3 servings worth was not allowed. I've figured out most of my stomach ache triggers, but some days are simply worse than others and nothing i eat or do can change it. And I have a challenge for you, try some full fat yogurt! :) I was freaked out at first too but after reading a bunch of posts about the benefits of full fat dairy I felt better about it and it really helps me meet my cal goal, plus i've discovered greek yogurt is the best tasting thing on the planet! Hope you're doing well! 

agru- I will definitely be eating at the bat mitzvah! The part that concerns me is how nervous it will make me. I always manage to eat, i'm just sometimes not too happy in these situations, but hopefully I can relax and enjoy spending time with my friends and family! Hope you have fun with your brother! So, just because he keeps ultra kosher, does that mean the whole family has to change their eating habits when he comes? just wondering. 

lulu- congrats on doing well in the race! be sure you're eating enough! it's great you had energy, but a lot of that coudl also be adrenaline, you're still burning tons of calories. Why make porridge with water? make it with milk! the taste is 100x better! good luck in lacrosse tomorrow! and I think you can def get a sports scholarship, those ivy leagues are expensive! which ones were you looking at? I"m glad you were able to talk to your mom, now you know you can rely on her to be supportive in mexico rather than overbearing.

I was saying ADD some carb snack foods.  Why replace when you need more?  Plus real snacks and meals have both, a main dish and nuts and stuff, with the sides and snacks. So “plan” those crackers along with your pbj, trail mix, etc.  Add the cracker/cookie aisle to your grocery list and get ‘em in there!  You’re right-getting over 3000 will be a nightmare if you stick to your same old habits. Your meals need to be bigger sooner and that’s the main thing lacking.  You have main dishes, nuts, yogurts, and more than enough fruit.  Now get some new stuff in there and always the highest cal version!

 

For my eating, I’ve held strong with the ~500 cal increase this week following a 1lb gain—hoping the small increase will keep me ahead of my body so I don’t stay stuck.

 

Last night was an all time worse for my stomach, and the fight to eat then cope with the issues kept me up from 10pm-past midnight, and then up every hour during the night.  Suffice it to say I’m exhausted at work today!

 

Eating continues to be paying the price for my goals in tense discomfort right now.  I hope and pray that I can find some answers so that some day I can enjoy the food I really do love.

60-70% is a good range, the next step is probably going to be to get your fat up to about 30%.  My guess is if you do that your carbs will drop slightly, but hopefully not below 60-65%.

Carbohydrate fears again? Well you know the only way to get past it is to face it, right?  You were just over the minimum yesterday.  Keep practicing healthy eating instead of ED eating and he won’t be able to scare you so much because you’ll prove nothing bad [only good!] comes of doing it your [healthy!] way.

I'm playing catch up with you now too! I never get enough to eat at work although I eat more than my coworkers combined, so work days mean 1/2 day working, 1/2 day full time eating and not much else!

SPUNKY-hi hun, ugh, so sorry to hear your stomach is giving you more probs, when the next round of tests?  i know its not the same, but im finding i only enjoy the food in the 1st 1/2 of the day and later on i get so full, im just eating for the sake of getting the cals. 

 i hope to go asap to buy new foods, i havent run out of the other stuff so im having to eat more volume, which is too hard at this point.  im going to get higher cal bread+full fat yogurt to start, cookies too.  its hard to eat "more" so i need the higher cal stuff.  what do you mean, "real snacks and meals have both, a main dish and nuts and stuff, with the sides and snacks"?  im hoping to go out to eat bc otherwise im just at a loss and facing an ensure bc im still so full.  im still so in diet mode i suppose that i cant fathom what real meals are, if that makes any sense?  new stuff? hmm, the next week will be family eating, holidays, brother home, so i hope itll be helpful in the gaining dept, tonight might have to be take out tho bc im just not understnading this.

spunky- actually fats are never a problem since that's the easiest way for me to get my cals up. I know it makes absolutely no sense for me to be afraid of bread but not of fat?? I'll usually get about 40% fat, never less than like 35 and have even gotten 50% on days I use pb and oils to catch up. I also try not to log, specifically because i then get caught up in percentages, but it's sort of a stress thing and I cope by freaking out about my intake and getting ocd about it so then I have to log to make sure it's ok. my carbs are usually 55- 60, fats 35-40 and protein for the rest of it. if anything my protein is proportionally low, but since all my numbers are high I know i'm getting more than enough protein and its much easier to make up cals in fat. 

I"m sorry your stomach is causing so many problems! i really hope they figure it out soon. you're much stronger than i was when I was dealing with all the gi problems, emotionally i obviously did not cope well :\ have fun tonight! 

soo full, cant wait to go get full fat foods, i feel like im about to pop!

GIBBIT-so since its sukkot-a hol;iday for 1 wk i think, plus my bro will be home and my paresnts want 100% fam time w him to try and get him to move hom, all dinners+any possible meal, like the 1st 2 days and ;ast 2 days of the holiday my mom will take off so it will be pretty much a lot of meals.  he wont drink the same milk, bread anything, plus its the holiday so it will be all huge meals.  im just still rigid w eating w others+my times that this should be good in hallenging my fears and getting over this garbage rigidity!

Well godd news is I did just that... kept eating and i feel a lot better now..

My food so far  -

B- 500

Apple - 80

L - 400

Icecream - 100

Juice - 110

Banana milk shake - 300

so far  -1490

planning to have protein shake whihc wud come arnd 460cal and dinner - 400 ,

may be juice after dinner -110

So targetting 2460cal.. not bad i guess :))

Had lots of liquids because of the stomache ache... still not well but feeling better ...

s- at friends house, about 1/2 a bag of goldfish crackers (100 cals for 40 and I ate at least 200)

s- whoahh i cant believe it but ate 12 cups (its actually a TON) of buttered popcorn, and im HUNGRY, its so weird...

 

edit: i was spontaneously hungry..s o iwas about to grab one of those 40 cal yogurt cup things but then i wanted oatmeal.. and for the first time withotu caring i just had carbs at night :D,

it was oatmeal with cinnamon raisins and peanut butter (sounds gross but HIGHLY recommend it, its awesome :)

 

ARG! I have no life!! But have any of you read any books by Michael Pollan? They're called In Defense of Food and The Omnivore's Dilemma. I've read In Defense and I'm half way through the other one, and they're so good! They've changed the way I think of food.

lala- Oh, well thanks for putting up the video anyway. I watched half of "The truth about size zero" today and that was pretty intereting too. Louise Redknapp goes to rhodes farm to talk to some of the girls.

gibbit- Glad campaigning went well. Don't worry about not exercising! The amount of exercise some people do here troubles me.. This is recovery, you don't need to be putting any more stress on your body than you need to.

agru- Yeah, you def. need to switch to higher cal stuff. Have you tried macaroons? Lol random but they're yummy cookies and they're pretty high cal. Maybe for snacks to get in more cals, you could have a mini meal. Like instead of having a yogurt or whatever you could have ravioli with sauce, or pizza. Oh yeah and get a higher cal ice cream!! Haagen dazs and ben and jerry's each have about 250 cals per half cut, so that's an easy way to add cals.

slr- Woo go you! It seems like you're doing a good job of forgeting the ED and are just having a good time with your friends. Yummy goldfish. I could eat half a bag too. Keep it up!

Snack- Almonds, apple, carrots, YoBaby, cheddar bunnies w/ PB

Dinner- 4 veggie mini quiches, 2 slices of toast WW potato bread (out of normal dinner bread) with butter

Aqua: Ooh, don't think I've seen that one. I've heard of both of those books, and high praise for the most part. I should try looking for at least "In Defence..." as that's the one I've heard more about.

Don't have time for individual replies so just a general, hello and keep up the hard work all! I'm aiming for 2800, going pretty well today, really been pushing the fats and experimenting with what is least filling. (I know I'm going to be full but what I can do to alleviate it to some degree>)

Hey girlies! Life is sooo busy, ahh...Really sorry that I have not posted in a while. I really need to get into a routine so I will be able to fit in time for posting on here :) I am doing really well though! Food just isn't an issue. I mean, I am still a HUGE healthy eater/nutrition lover as well as exercise psychoj (hence the name), but I am not longer obsessive. I have maintained my weight for oh I don't know, 3 months? Have not been to the nutritionist/counselor in it seems like forever.(praise the Lord) I need updates on all of you! Lol. Oh and one more thing. My knee issues/pain have been gone for awhile until about a couple days ago when I got hit in the side of my right leg (around the knee area) and the pain is behind my (right) knee and the sides of my lower legs down to my shins and further. Hopefully that made sense. I think I tore something, but if anyone has any comments/suggestions they would be much appreciated! I am probably going to have to go back to my orthopedic place and see what I did to myself. Agruskin-If you do not mind me suggesting this, I think that one way to up the calories would be switching your ice cream. You could have the same amount for over DOUBLE the calories. I bought some Haagen Das (sp?) Peanut butter and chocolate ice cream that was to DIE for!!! And it came in at 720 calories per cup. Yum yum!:]

Slr-You and I might think it is weird that after large amounts of food (or what seem to US like large amounts) we are still hungry, but you know what? That is our body speaking to us :) It is saying I need NOURISHMENT! Great job :]

so its a good thing when someone starts eating more and they become hungrier, it means their metabolism is speeding up and their body is asking for more, but what does it mean if youre not hungry, or youre only hungry the 1st 1/2 of the day and then later youre just mostly full, what would that mean??

On the snacks, I don’t think it’s that your dumb, you’re just thinking about it way too hard and reading into what I’m writing too much.  Let me see if I can be really clear: don’t think—just take it as it is, no hidden strategies!

  1. Look at your current daily
  2. Plan new daily with new items: frosted animal cookies for example.  Add those to your meals and snacks.

Do you know what I’m talking about when I refer to the snack aisle of the grocery store?  I’m talking about the one with chips, chex mix, crunch-n-munch, flipz pretzels, and so on.  Stock up on some of those and add them to your intake as well as eating the whole fat kind.

For example:
Breakfast: large sized bagel with 2-3tb pb, 2-3 eggs cooked in butter and milk, trail mix with M-m’s and cheez its, and a tall glass of milk to top it all off

Sample Snack: 2 brownies as described, trail mix, package of flipz pretzels, milk

Sample Dinner:  great main dishes with the sandwhich and salad, but lacking in sides/deserts—add: chips and dip, crackers and hummus, etc. and some muffins

Does all of this make sense? It’s very straightforward, don’t try to make it complicated—you’re just confusing yourself that way.

Good to hear you eat the whole egg—but one?  Not picking on you, but just to let you know, my sister is currently dieting and even she eats 2-3 eggs at a time!

Remember that normal people eat things like mayo and ice cream.  As a gainer they should be a solid part of your diet in high portions.  Back in the dorms it was tradition to get pints of Ben-n-Jerry’s and eat the whole thing.  Serving sizes are for measurement purposes only.  Noone eats one serving for real life eating. 

Get the flipz, the ice cream, the chex mix, some fig Newton cookies, some bigger bagels, and beef up your meals with those as demonstrated above [you can mix it up! That was just an example.]  You’ll learn to eat like a real person by practicing just like you did with increasing quantity.

If you eat like this getting 3000 calories won’t be so painful!  It’s hard for you because you still have a lot of diet-style eating, but you want to eat normal amounts.  With more normal foods [snacks and full fat and bigger portions] and eating sooner, it won’t be such a nightmare!did they help in some way?

From your last post, Agru, every step up will be uncomfortable at first.  But again, a lot of it is because your using the same habits and trying to learn a new level and real eating.  Stay consistent and use the items and meal structures above and it'll feel a lot better, and your results will be too!

SOUNKY-hi, thank you, i KNOW i overthink some things to the point where i dont understnad the simplest things, its all so foreign.  i live at home and we havent had family dinners, other than holidays, since i was in HS and dont havve any memory what those included.  i cant remember my eating habits pre-ED whatsoever.  my mother doesnt cook, never has, so its always frozen stuff and my laoded salads for dinner.  the next wk will be diff bc its a holiday and my bro is coming home so dinners and some lunch will be bigger and w the fam.

lol, i was laughing so hard, yes, i know the snack aisle altho obviosuly its 1 i ginore, till as soon as i get a chance to shop! ok, so bfast i got, ill get bagels only think, ill probably do hardboiled eggs to save time.  fo dinner, you mean loaded salad+sandwich or main+chips, even when a couple hrs alter i have a night snack?  muffins?  for the snacks, those were each seperate snacks im guessing and then add a glass of milk. 

so lunch can be a sandwich, full fat yogurt, a fruit, a snack, just higher cal versions that what ive been having?  as in having animal cookies or flipz(higher cal than what ive been having).
