Weight Gainers: What did YOU eat today?
I am copying the many times copied thread, "What did you eat today?" in hopes of helping some of those who are just starting to gain and have no clue what to eat. I know that when I began weight recovery, I was eating tons of low-cal foods just because that's what I was used to. I learned the hard way that dense foods are essential to weight gain when you have high caloric requirements (at one point I needed 4500 cal to maintain my weight on BEDREST). Perhaps newbies can get some ideas if we post our weight gain meal plans! Even if you're not gaining anymore, grab an old one and post it!:]
Please note that every body is different and some will need more or less calories than others to gain. This thread is just so that you can get an idea of what you need.
Oh, and yes, I'm breaking the "no calories, no portions" rule, since it is pretty helpful in this case. If you want to post cals/portions you can. I just ask that you don't post if you're not eating enough, though as this is a weight gain thread, I would hope none of you are undereating.;]
I'll start....
Breakfast (875 cal)*
- 1/2 cup oatmeal (150) cooked with
- 1 cup evaporated whole milk (300)
- 1 mashed banana (100)
- 2 tbsp peanut butter (200)
- 1 tbsp ground flaxseed and cinnamon to taste (50)
- 1 hard-boiled egg (75 cal)
Morning Snack (300 cal)*
- 1/4 cup mixed nuts (200)
- 1/4 cup dried apricots (100)
Lunch (660 cal)*
- 1/4 cup rice cooked in 1 cup chicken stock (300) and
- 1/2 cup canned or cooked chickpeas (145) and
- 1/3 cup shredded cheese (150) and
- 1/4 cup each onion, peppers, and tomato (30) cooked with
- 1 tbsp olive oil and curry powder to taste (120)
Afternoon snack (390 cal)*
- 1 serving baby carrots (35)
- 1/4 cup hummus (155)
- 1/4 cup mixed nuts (200)
Dinner (875 cal)*
- 1 cup of my insane Mac & Cheese recipe (515)
- 2 cups tossed salad (45)
- 2 tbsp rasins (60)
- 2 tbsp sunflower seeds (105)
- 2 tbsp dressing (150)
Evening snack (480)*
- 1 cup plain whole milk yogurt (180)
- 1/2 cup homemade granola (300)
About 3600 calories :]

hello! gosh, i miss so many posts in one night! so i did something really funny this morning that i now feel stupid about. Took my dog on a walk to the park, and on the way back my little brother and I thought it would be funny to take the mayors mccain-palin sign from his lawn. we took it and ran. and i haven't laughed so hard in a looong time! Just so this doesnt sound too terrible, the guy is a total jerk and sort of crazy. But then we came home and my mom was really really mad and I didn't hear the end of it all morning and she wanted us to take it back and is worried the police are going tocome after us now. I do feel bad because I wouldn't want anyone taking my signs obviously, but this guy's the type that's always pushing his views, religious and political, on everyone in the neighborhood. No one was around and they werent home. But now i'm worried they might have a camera or something. eh, hopefully nothing happens. I feel a bit mischevious like Theo today! So far eatings been good and hearty, going to see a charlie chaplin film at the art museum tonight at 7. I'm also going to work in Boston for a conference from tuesday to saturday so i'll be abset from posting for a while. I'm excited/ nervous about eating out and eating conference food. I'll have to pack a lot of snacks but i also want to challenge myself to eat a lot of the foods they serve at the conference which are always like 5 course meals.
b- oatmeal made with pecans and 1/2 pear and vanilly soymilk. other half of pear in bowl of yogurt, and lots of almonds from the bag while talking to my mom.
s- ok everyone in my house is sick so i put one of those vitamin C fizzy things in glass of grapefruit juice.
l- omelette with soy chorizo cooked in olive oil. Salad with spinach and carrots in olive oil (extra long pour here for fat) and vinegar. Protein shake made form powder since i'm out of juice. small peice of my pumpkin cake which is going stale since i haven't been home in 3 days.
agru- woohoo for jeans taht fit! I'm with you today on eating through the pain, i've been so uncomfortable getting to 3000 and my stomach still hurts today from the dairy last night, but i'm treating this like my job, or like studying, i dont have to enjoy it, it just needs to be done. Eventually all of these things will pay off, hopefully i'll be smarter :p, make more money, and have sexy curves, talk about a powerhouse!
we did the macarena of course, and the twist and the hava nagila lol, the dj was great! can't you just get seperate yogurts for you and your mom? i have to get my own foods all the time, my brothers eat junk, my mom gets light yogurts and eats a lot of white bread, and my dad is a cheese a meat guy. Full fat dairy is really good for you, maybe you can look up some info on the benefits of that and show it to her? if not just get it anyways and do what you know is best for you.
falling- i agree with maybe writing it down first, i have such a hard time talking about serious things with my mom, when i finally talked to her about my ed I cried through the entire thing and i think she had to infer what i was trying to say more than i was telling her. don't worry about the plane food, you still did really well! and havent been unhealthy at all. I'm going to have to deal with that tuesday.
afonoleri- dried fruit is soo great for upping the cals! i love dried figs. good luckw ith the rowing today and as always, eat it back!
charlie- good luck with the cheese! Its a great way to add cals not to mention lots of deliciousness. I used to love cheese laden dishes, fondues, pizza, cheesy pastas.
mashed tats- welcome!! you've come to a great place and we've really all been improving lately thanks to all the support we give each other, so i hope we can help you too! Your bmi is dangerously low so you're going to have to eat way more than 1600, we use 2500 as the bare minimum for recovering not just weight but health. Some ways to easily increase calories are denser foods, maybe try a higher calorie cereal or replace it with granola and be sure to throw in dried fruit and nuts. Nuts and nut butters will provide you with essential fats. Maybe try a large banana? for lunch, i know it can be scary to eat in a caf but could you grab a larger potato? or put toppings like sour cream and cheese on it? and use oil and vinegar if they have it for a dresssing, if not vinagrettes should be good too. Definitely switch to the full fat fage, this is super easy and it's a lot more nutritious for you, use more than 1 tsp of honey, and also add nuts and dried fruit to this too. the magnum and choco bar is great! and maybe add some ice cream to your fruit at night. feel free to ask away if you have any questions!
sayuri- i do badly with my parents too, so you have to learn to block them out at meal times and remind yourself you are doing this for YOU, not them, they have no influence on what you eat. Take advantage of them cooking for you and trying different foods once in a while. you can also teach them some western cooking once in a while and make it a fun family activity! And keep in mind that you do have to eat more than they do, i get stuck trying to match my eating to theirs too and then i lose weight, so even though i feel akward and embarrased eating more and more often, i have to push through it and do it anyways.
lulu- wow those are great schools! so expensive though, i woudl never be able to go :\ hope you get scholarships. congrats on making the U19 team! I'll be in boston next week, i know it's beautiful there, and i'll also be right there with you with the uncomfortable vacation eating.

GIBBIT-sounds like youre having fun at home-so cool! lol i hope i have fun w my bro, were leaving to get him from the airport soon. my mother doesnt care if the yougurt is in the house, she just didnt get why I would need/want it and didnt think it was cool for me. good luck at the convention, ofcourse challenge yourself but also bring stuff, just incase! yup, im staying at 3000, hope youre doing well getting at least there as well!
aw thanks gibbet, replies like that really help reassure me that i'm doing the right thing in pursuing recovery.. tis just so hard though! i know you can do anything when you put your mind to it, it's just hard to break the habit, especially since i put on so much weight in hospital just to get to where i am now! i went out this afternoon and bought a nakd bar (they're like luna bars? raw food bars, vegan, natural etc.) which looks delicious and it's 220 kcals...the rational part of my brain says 'eat it tomorrow for your AM snack instead of the 140kcal one'... but the thought of it TERRIFIES me. like i honestly don't know if i can. ughhhh. i'll just have to see how i go... i just always tend to chicken out!! hope everyone is well and enjoying life :) xxxxx

Breakfast-Whole Grain Zucchini Bread w/ smart balance; organic apple
Lunch-Chicken salad sandwich (chicken breast, light mayo, worcestershire, salt and pepper, fresh basil, green apple pieces, and of course whole wheat bread!); apple; (all natural) pretzels
After lunch I cleaned up the kitchen and decided to bake something, so I made whole wheat cupcakes w/ chocolate butter cream frosting/powdered(sp?) sugar and they are AMAZING! They smell like allspice and cinnamon...
Snacks-Cupcake w/frosting (they are small and shaped like stars b/c I used star shaped tins!); apple
the american uni talk was really good... it ended up being mainly the university of virgina that talked... it seemed really nice does anyone know much about it??? he also seemd v interested in my lacrosse!! hopefully i can go to more soon... i missed the yale one last week which sucked but there should be more!!!
after dinner i had the most painful stomach pain and just now i had to force down some porrigde .. i felt so aweful and guilty.. but i knew i had to eat it as today has been hard work.. much exercise ... feeling slighly better now i have eaten it but need to keep thinkin positive :)
gibbet - yer i wud have to get finachial aid or a scholarship to go to those unis or i wud have o forget it as they are so expensive... what uni do u go to? thanks! hope ur vacation eating goes well... we can battle together! and hopefully all will go well.... how long u in boston for? To think this time next week ill be on a plane and i hate eating on planes so i dont no wot to do? mashed - as gibbet said u shud b aiming for 2500 cals.... u wont gain weight fast for ur motabolism will speed up... i maintain on 2500 cals now used to eat at the very worst 300 cals and mantained at 500 cals.. so ur motabolism does speed up! but do it slowly ... it may seem a struggle and hell but ur life is worth that.. :)
agru - just read ur post to spunky and it is rt each bite u take gets u closer... and brill taking the descion to eat higher cal foods! ur doin so gr8 keep it up!!! and i so hope i can keep this min set for at least a few days.. so i can keep feelin on such a high.. apart from the slight blip about the porridge ..i avent felt that neg or EDish since i woke up on sat! it really does mae that much difference! and that is great news about th jeans!!!! hope all s gd nd that u had a well deserved relaxing w/e hehe

B= porridge w water... few seeds and tablespoon maple syrup ... 2 toast -marmite - honey
S= fruseli bar and gatorade(while playin)
L= (after playin for 1hr 1/2) 1 wholemeal pitta w plain tuna and 1/2 tomatoe.... 1 wholemeal pitta w pb + j... 150g fat free yogurt
S= (straight after 1 hr of match play) low fat rice puddin, protein drink and 1 slice malt loaf
S= when back at house 4pm - cup special k, 100ml skimmed milk, few berries and 150ml fruit smoothie.... 1/2 pear
D= 1 wholemeal pitta and baked beans.... salad... fat free yogurt +few berres and all bran
S= porridge w 200ml skimmed milk .... few raspberries

Lulu – well done for the selection! I'm really glad you've had a string of good days, and I definitely hope it'll give you great motivation. I row in a crew, usually an eight, sometimes a four. That's amazing about your godmother's son. Rowing is hard, even at college level. I know people who row for the university too, and even they train ridiculously hard. But it's so worth the pain when you finish a race!
Agru – Glad to hear you're still feeling motivated. Try and enjoy the holiday and your brother's company. I know I need to get higher, but I really struggle mentally to increase my target. I'm thinking I might try moving it up by 100 every three or four days rather than once a week, and see how I cope with that. And yay on your jeans fitting well!
Gibbit – Enjoy the Charlie chaplin film. To my great shame, I've never actually seen one… Good luck with the conference. I'm sure you'll get through it absolutely fine.

The erg didn't happen this evening, so I have to do one tomorrow morning at 7.50 instead. Which mucks up my breakfast schedule. On the positive side, I got a part in the college drama society's next play. I'm really excited, even though it's only two weeks away and there are quite a lot of lines to learn…
Rest of today:
Lunch – ham and cheese toastie, pb, biscuit, figs, apple – 600
Snack – chocolates – 150
Dinner – peas and carrots, salmon ravioli, bread and butter – 700
Dessert – tiramisu – 280

Total today – about 2450. Not quite on target yet, so I might have a spoon of nutella before bed.

s- at the mall, went to starbucks and got an "orange banana mango" viviano blend (bunch of fruits and juices and milk), i asked for the highest fat milk they had which was 2% for that specific item but i settled for that, hopefully raised the cals a bit.

right when i got home had some veggies with hummus and my friends mom sent leftover lasagna and pasta from the party which i completely finished, no guilt,a nd it was amazingg!

So the movie was pretty good. Very loosely based on the book though. My mom asked me if I wanted candy and I said sure, something fruity. She got skittles. I read the ingredient lable and the third ingredient on it was hydrogenated oil.. why is it neccessary to have that in skittles?? So yeah, once the movie started I had about.. five. I know, I know, pathetic. But after I ate them, I seriously considered going to the bathroom and purging. I've never purged before, and I figured it wouldn't be desirable to start over skittles. Some other time, I suppose. I wish I could go back to the days where I didn't mind stuffing myself with popcorn, candy, and soda at the movies.
slr- The recipe for banana stuffed french toast is in the support recipes thread. It's divine! It's the first thing a posted there. WHY do you have so many projects?? And yeah, cheesy pasta dishes are generally pretty high cal so 500 sounds about right. Good job with all the FF's today!
mashed_tatties- Welcome! Hehe your screen name is funny. Don't worry, we'll pressure you plenty. Sometimes when I think I restricting, I decide not to because I know everyone here will be on my case about it. The general rule of thumb is that ED recoverers need at least 2500 to gain. Easiest thing to do would be to switch to higher fat dairy products.. you really can't stand the taste of the high fat stuff, even 1%? Your diet looks pretty low in fat to me. Nuts and nut butters are great ways to add cals, as I'm sure you already know. You could just spread some on your fruit and barely notice the extra cals. Also, cook your veggies in oil. And I think having a treat every day is fine. I have ben and jerry's/ haagen dazs every night. It's teaches you that it's okay to have a litle junk in your diet! Good luck!

And speaking of Theo, where is she? Good luck eating the conference food. My dad works at conferences a lot and based on his body size, I think they're suffieciently high cal!

lulu- Sorry, I don't know much about UVA. I live in the state next to Virgina though, not like that has anything to do with it. Hope you manage to get a good scholarship. Good job making yourself eat oatmeal. Just think, if you don't feed yourself, you won't be well enough to come to the US for school!

so we got my bro from the airpost and its cool and all...but the next couple weeks are deff going to be super super challenging! basically all meals will be together which is hard for me, diff foods+timing, but i can do it, this is part of life and i WILL get used to it! im already having my snack when no one else is, supper hard for me, but i need to do wahts rt for ME.

my eating has been on and off for about one month now and i feel like im not getting anywhere pysically...mentally im feeling better but i never seem to stick to getting my health back and gaining any real weight!
i am so underweight now that i know i should be in hospital and the only reason im not is cause im seeing a pysc that is cheaking on me to make sure i am okay.
i have had enough... i dont wont to do this any more... i wont my health and my life back ....
anorexia has stolen over 11 yrs from me now......and i am done....im ready to let go..... i have no need for ed in my life and can overcome this and get well!!!
im sick of playing games not only with ppl around me but with myself!
I feel different and am sick of settling for just being "okay"
and slowly getting there!!!!!
i am asking for support and friendship as i cant do it without that...but its up to me and i will fight tooth and nail....im not looking back and wont stop until i am healthy,happy,freee and KYLIE the person that God ment for me to be....not a walking stick living a life of fear....

spek: I dont know how much advice i can really give you but i'm here for support if you need it :) just get into it tomorrow morning right away, jump into your new lifestyle and dont even think anythingw ill make you fat because trust me, it'd take ages to gain enough to even look average. just keep eating and don't make ita c hore, make it something you can enjoy. Take a cookin class maybe?, or do something that can make you look forward to food :)
hey everyone... i had an interesting day... i dont have alot of time to send personal messages ill do that later but i wanted to write about what happened and post my food.
i got a call from my agent today that a script came in for me for a new film that starts filming the end of the month... now i want to take it but it will be 16hr days... what will i do about food? its not like i can go home and eat and if i get all diva and request certain foods on set they will say forget her... theres 10000 actors waiting in the wings to grab the role from me im sure and i am a dime a dozen.
what sucks is i do have dietary restrictions beyond fears... i am a heart patient and have colitis so its not like i can eat freely and anything... i was sick as a dog all night from the wedding. that happend 9 times out of ten when i venture out and try new foods or eat at restaurants... thats why i cook so much.
im sure i can bring food but i wonder if this is just too much stress.
if anything it shows how much i need to get better fast. i mean how sad that food can hold me back from a job. the ed has to go. im doing so well and raised cals and fat and carbs and im rockin this rcovery AT HOME... i just dont know how well i will do it out or on location so i dont know if i should take the role.

ahh, lovely family time! lol everyone is on such edge trying to make it "perfect" which is impossible ofcourse. ate dinner w the family, like 3 mins after my snack, but i did it.
DANA-not sure what colitis is but cant you bring or buy foods while its your "off" time? oh yea, i need to go to bed full or i cant sleep. im really hoping the next 2 weeks help me chill and get back to life and be more relaxed w my eating style!

hello all! omg its 10:30 and i'm just now eating dinner! eee, i'm gonna have to stay up late to get in more eating, but i'm sleepy :( the movie was 2 1/2 hours long, but really good! I went with this guy i've been hanging out with for a while, but only in a friend sort of way. I've considered other possiblities but unfortunately its another one of those that I think personality wise we get along great but the attraction and chemistry is just not there, at least on my side. Maybe i've somehow just lost my capacity for romantic feelings, i havent even had a crush on anyone in ages, don't know if its me or just lack of options. I was going to try to eat dinner before going and i ahd cooked it, but i had also just finished my snack when i realized i had to hurry up and leave since i was taking the train there and meeting him a bit early so we could talk and catch up. then of course the movie was long and the train took forever to come afterward. My foods yummy though! i'll post the recipe.
sooo after lunch, was still hungry and picked at the pumpkin bread a bit more.

Also toasted some slices of pumpkin bread for dipping. yay for more chocolate meals! Can't really taste the chocolate though :\
s- since its going to come so close to dinner it will have to be something that goes down easy, most likely ice cream based.
agru- hope you're having fun with your brother! where in israel does he live? i've considered going there for a while, don't think i'd make it permanent but i really like it there. have you been? oh, i also love my night snack more than any other meal! I can't sleep well unless i'm almost uncomfortably full.
dana- hmm those would be long days, but it might be a a good thing, maybe it coudl be just to think to push you enough to get through all this once and for all. I don't think you'd ahve to get diva-ish about it but if you do have medical restrictions justmake sure they can work around that at least, what sort of food do they usually provide? i'm sure sandwiches and stuff will be available, catering, if you can cook on weekends or off time and bring that to warm up on set. a lot of snack foods, granola bars, fruit. what sort of part would it be?
aqua- ugh, yea conference food worries me :\ i'm going to pack a lot of snacks for the hotel room though, my parents never eat after dinner, or in between meals. don't try to purge!! the amount in skittles is minimal. and even though hydrogenated oil isnt healthy, it's not going to hurt you in moderation. the damage you would do from purging even once would be way more. Just remember how youused to eat and how everyone else eats, people eat candy and skittles all the time, they enjoy them and move on, and they're all still alive and healthy, and you were healthy back then too, right?
slr- you're eating so well!! :::big hugs::: for you today! I love comfort food, and great job eating out!
afonoleri- i had never seen one of his movies either, but it was really good! he's really funny but also super intelligent, the writing was really well done. Have nutella on toast or mixed in with ice cream! remember 2500 is the minimum, but getting more is even better!
lulu-my mom was never fun like that so she was just mad at us. I hate eating on airplanes too, my foods going to be messed up on tuesday too and the rest of the week too with the conference, but don't worrya bout it too much, life is about being flexible, eating different things at different times, but keep in mind that eating is not a choice, we have to do it no matter what it is or when or where. Pack lots of snacks and do the best you can!
mashed tatties- you can do it! challenge yourself, as AGRU has said many times, the only way to overcome these fears is to just DO them, recovery is about taking action, you can think about it all you want but nothing will happen until you do it and many times we have to do without thinking because our brains can't be trusted yet. Thanks guys, for your advice. I think I'll really think it out tonight and talk to my mum about it. Gosh, once again I'm in a big fight in my dad. Its so hard to talk to him compared to my mum as he jumps to conclusions so quickly and has the tendency to raise his voice when he talks. It really scares me so I get all quiet and mousy and he thinks that I'm withdrawing and refusing to talk. Ugh, I seriously need to write things down xD
But he even said it today. He thinks that if he left it to me, I would continue to restrict. WHY DOES HE THINK THIS?? He doesn't trust me! And he even told the therapist today that I used singapore as an opportunity to restrict because they weren't there with me. He just doesn't understand, and when I try to talk to him, he just gets even angrier.
ENSURE IS DISGUSTING! Yuck!! I tried half a can of Ensure Plus Vanilla flavour last night and I felt like vomiting right after! (but i didn't dont worry) It tasted ultra sweet and like condensed milk or something... bleh! Also, I'm not sure if it was the ensure or something else, but my stomach was incredibly bloated after that and was sticking out so much. On top of the nausea for the whole night.
b - bowl of cereal, fruit juice
s - apple, almonds
l - multigrain bread w ricotta, turkey and lettuce. mandarin
s - 250ml banana milk, almond spread on toast, small serving special k
d - white rice with steamed chicken ginger and shallots
s - oh nooo i hope i don't have to drink ensure!!
xfallingstar- Ensure DOES rmind me of condesned milk!! but when i was little and trying ot lose weight (because i actually needed to) i was supposed to substitute ensure as a snack, (because i binged on cookies). The chocolate one was okay but i got tired of it fast. If i were you, i'd just make a milkshake/smoothie and add protein powder or ice cream or something to raise the calories, and if you're looking for the vitamins, at my health store i found "vitamin powder" that you can add to things to give you lots of nutrients =)
i need some quick opinions guys, if im eating steadily at 1800-ish, would it be too much of as hock for ym body to suddently jump to 2500? would it do anything to my weight gainin? (in a bad way i mean) like .. not to sound childish but will i gain fat really quickly if i just all of a sudden jump to it?
let me know, because int he long run i'd love to be ABLE to mantain on 2500
but i dont want to gain weight really quick all ofa sudden (i want to gain on 3000+ but how do i know my body can maintain on 2500?) sorry for allt eh questions but if anyone could take the time to reply i'd really appreciate it :S
on a side note: yesterdays pasta was sooo amazing that i decided i want to make my own, any ideas?

breakfast: 1/2 large blueberry raspberry oat bran muffin w/ almond butter
shredded wheat n' bran w/ nonfat milk
orange
snack: orange juice
lunch: peanut butter and banana sammie on Ezekiel bread
salad w/ turkey, eggplant hummus, sunflower seeds, and dried apricot
snack: loaded smoothie
brown rice w/ olive oil and sunflower seeds
kiwi
dinner: large plateful of whole grain and flax pasta in a tomato-mushroom sauce w/ tuna, spinach, and olive oil
broccoli in lemony hummus sauce
orange juice
snack: nonfat yogurt w/ mixed berries and shredded wheat n' bran
prune, watermelon
Slr: A jump from 1800 to 2500 would be a jump of 700 in a day which might not be too good. I think you might be better to add 350 one day then 350 again the day after if you are willing to. You will see water retention. So don't weigh for a couple of weeks, blind weigh if you have a doctor's appointment in between.
What sort of pasta ideas are you after?
Fallingstar: I hate nutrition drinks, but that's because I had to live off of them last year during a kidney infection. Why are you looking for them? Just to add calories or for the nutrition itself? Either way I think you'd be smarter to try and add the nutrition through foods rather than those drinks, though I know they sometimes end up being helpful for some because they're the easiest thing to remove whenever maintainance comes around. Sorry about your dad. Mine is volatile too.
